Having been prescribed antibiotics and other drugs back in Puno I assumed I was all set for the Inca trail after a days rest at our hotel. Silly me! That night I started chucking up my spinach ravioli from the previous night and diddley squitting more too. God it was awful. My roomie took one look at me when she woke up at about 6.30am and rushed off to summon a doctor. After a full examination they broke the bad news to me that I needed to be rushed off to hospital back in Cusco to have loads of tests, a drip, drugs etc. Having suffered NO altitude sickness symptoms at all compared to the rest of the groups headaches, vomitting etc it seemed it was going to me that didn't get to do the trek, ... read more

Unfortunately the Pisaq market was not on (only Tuesday, Thursday and the big one Sunday) but we enjoyed the ruins high above the picturesque valley patch-worked by fields rimmed by vast terracing. Lunch in Urubamba. Then to Ollantaytambo. Much of this nice village is still set out as it was in Incan times with blocks, narrow streets and functioning aquaducts. The ruins that tower above the village is famed as the only site that resisted Spanish attack. The temple area at the top, the myriad of water features (water was considered sacred to the Incas), the terraces, the silos and the white bearded carved face on the opposite mountain make for a magnificent place to spend the afternoon. Train to AguasCalientes arrived in the pouring rain and we had to sort out tickets and things before ... read more

WE aren't actually in the jungle now, but we will talk about the last few days, and then do a short blog to finish off our time in South America....scary hey?? So, going back a few days, all the way to Tuesday, 9th November, we woke up in Cusco, and went to bed in Cusco. Between those hours though was a lot of fun, and then a fair bit of pain!! Lets start with the fun!! Brekky was again a nice experience, Mischa is loving the fried eggs on toast with cheese, ham and butter!! We then jumped into a mini-van with our Machu Picchu guide Raymar to head through the Sacred Valley...First stop though was an animal refuge place. There it rescued animals mainly from the black market or from hunting, and brought them back ... read more

Day 54 29th October The Sacred Valley, although this did not appear on our itinerary until we arrived in Cusco (seriously, it wasn’t on the original one we have from September!), we are very glad it was included. The day started with being picked up from Cusco at around 8.30am and a long drive up to our first stop, Pisac. On the way, the bus stopped at a viewing point overlooking the Sacred Valley and I have to say, it was beautiful, with the green fields of the valley below us and snow covered mountains above us. We stayed there for a while with the whole group taking lots of pictures and then got back on the bus to head to Pisac. Pisac is at the entrance to the Sacred Valley and is well known as ... read more

Tuesday 29.6.2010 day 258 Sacred valley and Train to Aguas Calientes We had to get up at 7am today to have bfast and get to our sacred valley tour. We had to pick up out train tickets as the agent did not drop them off the day before. So we got to the travel agency and they did not have the tickets so we said we need then now or we want our money back so she phoned someone up to pick them up. They came and dropped them off but then the girl said that she was not going to show us to the buss we asked and asked and then she said we get it out the front. But that did not seen right and if we missed the buss that was going to ... read more

Today we did the full-day Sacred Valley Tour by bus ($30/person includes lunch). We started the day, again, with our contact person showing up on foot and asking us to walk to the bus due to closed streets. However, this time we only had to walk two blocks, around the corner to the San Blas Plaza, to meet the rest of the group and our tour guide, Natalie. Our first stop was a mirador (scenic overlook) with a beautiful view of Pisac, glaciers in the distance, and the surrounding valley. Of course there was a small market and a young boy, dressed in ropa tipica(traditional clothing), being photographed for soles. He seemed pretty fascinated with us gringos and his pan flute. Next stop was the village of Pisac and its market. It is Wednesday(not a market ... read more

Day 1 - Sunday Bienvenido South America! Our first time south of the equator! We took an overnight flight from JFK to Lima and actually both were able to sleep fairly well which is quite a change from most of the overnight flights we do. We arrived in Lima for a quick layover, complete with our last Starbucks for awhile, before taking the 55 minute flight to Cusco. Arriving in Cusco was pretty funny as you go up in the plane but you don’t feel like you descend at all….we were flying next to the mountains and all of a sudden we were touching down. Raul, our taxi driver was waiting for us outside with a nicely printed sign. Raul fit the bill of every international taxi driver so far by having some American flair in ... read more

martes, 8 de junio The reason we went back to Puno (for all the Sherlocks questioning why we would go back to a place deemed good enough for just an afternoon the first time) was that we wanted to catch the Inka Express bus to Cuzco. It's a guided tour via some of the more interesting Inca spots and helps break a 7-8 hour journey by adding in education. Well worth the fortune we shelled on it. The bus left early in the morning so we arrived at the bus station as the sun arose, only to find the bus wasn't there. Just us and 3 Chinese girls with Hello Kitty and Cookie Monster luggage did little to ease our fears that the bus might not show and we would miss out on Machu Picchu. Turned ... read more
