After our routine morning delivery of coca tea to our tent, we packed up our stuff for another day. The morning sunrise cannot be expressed in words!! "Having made it over the 2 passes yesterday we're now treated to a relaxing day through some of the most beautiful scenery the Inca Trail has to offer. With a relatively short distance to cover along what is known as Inca Flat (gentle ascents and descents) we get to enjoy the lush and verdant cloud forest around us and the spectacular views of the Andes in the distance. With visits to 2 Inca sites (Phuyupatamarca and Winay Wayna) this is by far one of the most impressive days of the trek. Our campsite for tonight is at Winay Wayna (2680m / 8792ft) which we will arrive to be early ... read more

At day break, we are greeted at the entry of our tent by porters delivering hot coca tea and a bowl of warm water to wash our hands. Quickly packed our stuff so porters could pack the tent as we ate breakfast. "Today is considered by many to be the hardest day of the trek; approx. ten hours, with 2 high passes (Dead Woman's Pass is the highest at 4200m / 13779ft) to cross and nearly 16km to walk. We get fantastic views of the high mountain ranges as we cross the 2 passes and will have the chance to visit 2 Inca sites , Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca. We will also see a variety of plant and life in the Polylepsis forests that cover this area and hopefully spot White Tailed Deer as we near Dead ... read more

Our "bucket list" adventure trip begins... This is our first attempt at posting a travel blog so we'll see how it goes with both our motivation and wi-fi availability! We started our journey this morning when our friend, Ginna Naylor, took us to BWI for our flight to Lima, Peru via Newark. We have a full itinerary planned including Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Cusco, the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Puno, Lake Titicaca, and finally, Iquitos and the Amazon Basin. We made it to Newark on one of the bumpiest flights we've ever experienced. Happy to be grounded for a few hours! Dave is having some back issues so the next 8-hour flight could be interesting. ... read more

Day 53 is day 4 of the Inca Trail and a special day to remember being our wedding anniversary as well. However a 3.30 am wake-up tea quickly brought us down to earth. Another reasonable sleep in warmer conditions however I awoke to still very stiff muscles & some effects from the dehydration. We set off with great expectations at 4.10am, torch lights & breakfast snack in hand only to line up with a number of other groups at a nearby control point and await for the 5.30 am opening of the track. The delay is understandable as the last 6 kms is narrow with some steep drop off points yet some people think they need to reach the Sun Gate first & try to rush or make dangerous passing moves. Fortunately we did not see ... read more

Day 52 is day 3 of the Inca trail. A 6 am wake-up tea again after a reasonable sleep in freezing conditions for a 7.20 am start for a less intense day covering 11 kms to Winaywayna base camp. The early start is to allow us to reach camp by lunch time & after a rest inspect the spectacular nearby Winay Wayna ('Forever Young')ruins. We started with a trek over the third pass to the beautiful ruins of Phuyupatamarca, the 'Town above the Clouds', at 3,600 mtrs. This is another unique micro climate system known as the cloud forest that is almost continuously in cloud & fog & creates moist & humid conditions that is the perfect environment for moss, lichen & flowers to thrive including numerous types of orchids. Incas considered orchids the nicest flower ... read more

Day 51 a very early 5.30 am start with a gentle call by the porters to wake us up by asking if we wanted a cup of tea! Just like room service. We woke up to fine weather and after a big breaky we set out for the start of the most challenging day of the trek covering 13.5 kms. We had our 1st dropout when a lady succumbed to a pre existing foot injury & was forced to return with partner which was very unfortunate as he was planning to propose at the Sun Gate on day 4. We also lost Frankie as he had to escort them back. Feeling strong after yesterday's trek we got a head start on porters after breakfast as they break camp and we immediately ascend for 4 hours along ... read more

Day 50 is day 1 of the Inca Trail. By reputation the Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America. In just 39 km it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just cannot be beaten: Machu Picchu, the mysterious "Lost City of the Incas". We are excited to see how this reputation stands up but nervous as well to know if we have under-estimated the difficulty or susceptible to altitude sickness . Having stored the bulk of our luggage in Cuzco minimal clothing and sleeping gear is transferred into a small duffle bag for the next four days and carried by a team of porters with food and equipment ... read more

When I returned to mainland Ecuador last week, I decided (with a few friends from the tour) to head up to the equator which was only ten or so kilometres away. We took a taxi and took a few photos on the equator line at "the middle of the earth" before returning to Quito, picking up some laundry, and heading for the airport. It turned out that 6 of us had flights within five minutes of each other so it was nice to take the taxi to the airport together. I arrived in Lima at 10pm and after going through the security and getting in a taxi to my hotel, was greeted in my room by Frankie, who had flown in that morning and was looking pretty shattered. 6am the next morning saw us at breakfast ... read more
