After another super easy 40 minute flight over the Amazon and we were back in the Andes touching down in Cusco. With only the afternoon to prepare for the Inca trail trek, we bought a few last minute essentials, packed our bags and headed off to meet Cat, Josh and Holly (friends from Uyuni trip), for a few cheeky afternoon bevvies. A couple of litre bottles later and it was time to head off to our Inca Trail briefing at the tour company offices and to meet our tour guide (Danny), fellow trekkers and to be given a brief outline of the itinerary for the next few days. Briefing done, we met up with Cat, Josh and Holly again for a spot of dinner before heading back to try and get as much shut eye in ... read more

Day 1 We've been planning this for almost a year(really I've been planning it in my mind for almost a decade), and it's somewhat unbelievable that it's finally happening. We packed up the night before(i'll post my packing list at the bottom), and Peru Treks picked us up around 6 am to head out into the Valley. We had the best group I could imagine for this trek. There were 16 of us(4 Bermudans, 2 girls from the UK, and Australian couple, and a group of 6 women from Colorado plus us) and two wonderful guides, Saul and Yaneth. After a quick stop for breakfast and to buy walking sticks in Ollantaytambo we were at the first checkpoint for the trail. We made the final few adjustments to our packs, took a quick picture(I was super ... read more

There are approximately a million companies offering the 4D/3N Inca Trail trek in Cusco. After much research from Australia (you need to book months in advance) I decided on Wayki Trek. Day 0 – Wayki Experience The company we booked through offered a free option the afternoon/night before you begin your trek which they call the Wayki Experience. We were the only people from our group that decided to take up this option so following lunch (empanadas) we caught local bus with a guide out to the porters village for a homestay. Along the way we picked up some rice, sugar and bread for the family we’d be staying with as a thank you. The final leg was fairly amusing as we were crammed along with 25 other people into a minibus which was really not ... read more

4am came very quickly. We collected our bags and walked through town to the meeting place in one of the squares in Cusco. The Llama path team had Coca tea ready for us. This is meant to help with the altitude. When all 16 of us had arrived we jumped on the bus for 1.5hours till we reached a village. Here we stopped and had a big buffet breakfast. We all filled up on eggs, bread, pancakes and fruit, ready for our long day ahead of walking the first part of the Inca trail. We started to introduce ourselves. We have 10 Americans, 2 Portueguse, 2 Norwegians, me and Phill. After buying last minute supplies of water and ponchos, we jumped on the bus for another hour to the start of our Inca trail at kilometre ... read more

CONGRATULATION’S TODAY IS YOUR DAY. YOU’RE OFF TO GREAT PLACES! YOU’RE OFF AND AWAY. (Dr Seuss) Up bright and early for our great adventure. We leave from Cusco and travel 2 hours by van back down Sacred Valley, following the Urubamba River, past Ollantaytambo to km number 82 where our trek begins. Here we have to pass the check point, which is very strict, passports must be shown and documentation stamped. Our group consists of 11 staff, our guide Edwin, who is a lovely guy with a giggle only found in primary girl’s school. The cook Freddy who cooks us 3 course meals that would not be out of place in a French Restaurant, achieved in a tent attired in his white chef outfit. The 9 porters better known as Chasques, who were the great runners ... read more

Day 1 of our 4 day Inca Trail trek saw us rise at 3.30am, as we were being picked up at 4am for the 2.5 hour drive to the registration point and the beginning of the trail at Piscacucho. At 2600m it was the first time in nearly 2 weeks that we were below 3000m. This did not last long though as soon we climbed up to 3000m as the trail weaved through the Sacred Valley floor. It was quite warm, and Humming Birds were furiously beating their wings everywhere. By 1.30pm, we had reached our lunch spot and tucked into a delicious 3 course meal stacked full of carbs, as after we lunch we had to ascend to 3800m to our campsite for the nigh at Llulluchapampa. It was 4 hours of straight ascending mostly ... read more

WOW, Awesome, amazing!!! That sums up the day. We were introduced to the porters. Most of them were farmers from the same town in the sacred valley and had been doing the trek for several years to earn money. When they found out James had two sisters they started calling him brother in law. We started walking at 7.30. The going wasn´t as tough as yesterday. There were some really big steps. There were several sites along the way including Phuyupatamarka, Intipata and inka tunnels. We rose to the 3rd peak which wasn´t that difficult and then there was a steep decline. Loved today. It was my pick of the trek. Finished walking at 1pm. Had lunch and a short break before going down to Winay Wayna. This was a town and is quite well preserved. ... read more

Day 2 Very, very tough day. The trail just kept going up and up. We climbed 900 metre to the top of Dead Womans pass. I thought that I might have been the dead woman found at the top. We didn´t stay long as I was feeling the altitude. Quite dizzy and I had a headache. The last Km to the top was very tough. I spent a lot of time stopping to look at the scenery. It was mainly steps. The way down was hundreds of steps as well. I found that a lot easier. The walking poles certainly made it easier. Went to Sayaqmarka which is a very well preserved town. It was then onto the campsite Chaquiqocha. We didn´t stop for lunch which meant that we were on the trail for most of ... read more

Left from the hotel at 7.45 and drove to Km 82. The driver was a bit wild. We joined the porters there. They ahve very strick guidelines as to what weight they can carry so everything is weighed. They still arry a lot more than I would be able to. Today was only 750 mts climb over the 15kms. It wasn´t to bad. Passed a lot of the locals who use the track to get to there own communities.. They use mainly donkeys to carry their gear. The porter run ahead and set up a tent where we had lunch. They then packed up and ran to the campsite.... read more
