This week has been pretty cool so far. I volunteered at a school in the Mountains yesterday the children were so cute and all of them wanted to be held and given airplane rides. We played "Duck, Duck, Goose" and had some hoola hoop competitions. When we were walking around back in town I fell in a hole on the street because I was distracted by what my friend was showing me. No major injury just rainbow bruises. On Saturday I bought my tourist ticket for all these cool museums so I have been trying to make the most of the punches I have left. Already vistied the contemporary art museum and the Inka statue. Today I had ceviche, tigers milk, and this black corn fruit juice- the ceviche was delicious!!!! Also bought my train ticket ... read more

Ok, so Cusco isn't mysterious or gold but we were very impressed when we rocked up after our night bus from Arequipa. The main cultural city centre was full of impressive stone architecture and cathedrals, plazas, fountains and Inca stone walls and we liked it immediately. Checked into brand new Ecopackers hostel (the cleanest and shiniest hostel we've ever seen) and began our ''acclimatisation'' by relaxing in cafes and window shopping! Our good friend Jo arrived on a bus from Puno and we were very excited to see a friendly face and catch up on the news from back home over a Pisco Sour! Jo also bought us a South America guide book to replace the one we'd had stolen, thanks mate!! Next day was Dee's 34th birthday and after opening cards and reading messages from ... read more

Casey, a hippy, had filled Ben, Kylie and Taylor in on the intricacies of San Pedro (“Cactus is a particularly phallic plant, getting a woman to work over it changes the whole experience”). The drug-based conversation had Ben finally feeling brave or perhaps drunk enough to buy some weed. Ben had been warned by just about every person he had met – from travellers to an elderly gentleman who was a native of La Paz – about the dangers of buying drugs in Cuzco’s Plaza de Armas. You risked being sold oregano or baking soda or the far scarier prospect that the dealer was working in tandem with the police. Indeed, the latter had happened to Ben’s brother and Taylor in Madrid a number of years ago. Nevertheless tonight, Ben decided, he was going for it. ... read more

Day five in Cusco and today is hot!!! The last couple days I have felt comfortable enough to leave my casa and venture out into the city on my own- usually I just hang out at school and wait until someone else is going back to the compound. Taxis are super cheap and you get to see your life flash before your eyes several times. Seems like most of my stress comes from taking taxis (or rather from not being able to communicate with the driver YET) so I just decided to walk. The area I am staying in is called San Sebastion aka Dogville. There are so many mangy dogs all over the place that I was thankful on Friday when it rained because that meant I did not hear dog fights all night long. ... read more

I landed in Cusco approximately 7:45 this morning. The flight here from Lima I have to say was for me the most spellbinding of my life. We flew up close and personal to the snowcapped mountains. MY GOD!!!!!!! I was deathly tired after traveling for over 12 hours but, as soon as I saw the mountains, my camera started clicking. The flight crew on Peruvian Airlines, like the flight crew of my two Copa flights were very professional and were able to comprehend my hack-Spanish. Landing in beautiful Cusco was an event. I walked off of the plane, to 8 degrees Celsius and promptly walked back on. This island boy is accustomed to cold server rooms but 8 degrees!!!!!! I needed my jacket for sure. However, the minute I walked out of the airport and looked ... read more

Ben had been told about an Indian restaurant in town with an all-you-can-eat special for fifteen soles. So on Sunday, his last day in Cuzco, he hit the Plaza de Armas in search of a late lunch. Twenty minutes scouring the Plaza without results had him desperate. After a week of veggie meals, Ben craved all the protein he could stuff into his guts. Why hadn't he at least asked the name of the restaurant? Admitting defeat and leaving the Plaza by its southwestern corner, he spotted "The Indian Restaurant": maybe asking for a name wasn't necessary after all. It wasn't Bombay, but curried meat on rice is pretty hard to get wrong and Ben enjoyed his first plate. As he was cleaning off the last of the rice, he looked up at the waiter to ... read more

What’s that you say, two blogs in two days!! It’s a miracle. Well, we just thought that because we had such a fun day today, and the fact that the next few days are without computer but visiting big sites like Macchu Pichu and the Sacred Valley, we would do a nice short one of today, so here goes…. It’s a Saturday, so we were inclined to have another sleep-in. Unbeknownst to us, it was 9am before we knew it, so we quickly got ready, had some brekky for only 10 soles (AUD$4) and then went about trying to pack our bags. We have bought a few bulky but light items, which we had to squish in and still be under 20kg / bag. We accomplished this mission, with 3kg to spare!! YAY!! Jess had booked ... read more

Welcome to the home of the Inca's!! In a few days we head up to Macchu Pichu, which is quite exciting, but first off we have had a nice few days not doing too much....for once!! :) Thursday, 4th Nov started in Puno, and ended in Cuzco. In between though we had an early brekky, and got on the transfers to our bus at 7:30am. We were off and away by 8am, sad because it was our last Rosita day of our trip....and we still have over a week to go!! :· It was a long day again, over 400km, but it was all tarmac, and Mischa went up front for a few hours to chat to the driver and his partner. This allowed Jess to listen to some music and fall asleep. Lunchtime came and ... read more
