well, ted & i have had a fun couple of days. we went and saw some inca ruins around cusco yesterday. they were a sight to see! we rode some combis and buses around the andes. they were packed! crazy south america. cheap, though. the ruins at ollyntambo (sp) were really awesome. there were a bunch of terraces and rooms. there was furniture carved out of rocks. we had a hard time climbing up the terraces as we were at 12,000 ft. everyone tried to sell us stuff. we are growing tired of being asked for money. got a nice hostel last night. bargained them down to half price. we actually got a hot shower for once. we took the train to aguas calientes this morning. got up at 5. it was a beautiful ride. the ... read more

it was rather an ordeal getting to Aguas Calientes, first of all the 3 hour flight to madrid which on landing there were cross winds so it was unbelievably bumpy, and then a change at madrid so had to sit in the airport for a couple of hours not exactly the most stimualting thing espec when we didnt have any euros to buy anything. Then we had our flight to lima, 11 hours my word we were so bored, and the food wasn´t exactly nice, it was like cuppa soup pour over some pasta, and then in the last few hours travel sickness just took over and i was sick several times, which was horrible never been sop glad to see the seat belt sign come for landing. It was actually 9 hours in lima airport ... read more

Tuesday 11th December: On Sunday evening I tried some llama for my main dish; it´s a tender meat and tastes a little like venison - I like it. Monday morning was an early start to catch the 8:00am coach to Cuzco in Peru. I´m planning on spending a few days around Machu Picchu (renowned Inca site and one of the wonders of the world). The road was slightly better than the one from Uyuni. However it was a tedious and long trip. Nevertheless, there was some beautiful scenery on the way, particularly as we coasted close to Lake Titicaca. After the usual hold-ups at the border check-points we crossed into Peru. I changed all my Bolivianas into Peruvian sols, as I needed some change to buy something to eat along the way. Peru seemed much greener ... read more

Today we moved from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, a four-hour train journey through a canyon with the Urubamba river flowing. This time, we went backpacker class although the train went past the Hiram Bingham, a sort of Peruvian vresion of the Orient Express. Costs a cool 500 US Dollars to ride on that train. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, we dashed to our hotel, dumped everything and reported promptly for the first trip to Machu Picchu, armed with cameras and spare batteries. The fleet of buses were surprisingly efficient and we had not long to wait before we were tearing round hairpin corners and climbing up to the site. A good 30 minutes later, we had arrived! THe first sight of the place is unforgettable. We climbed to a vantage point and came out onto a ... read more

After nearly wasting a week of my life in Cuzco, we finally set off to go and visit Machu Picchu, one of the 'new' wonders of the world. Our day began with a short taxi ride to the local train station early in the morning with all the other day trippers. We boarded the backpacker train (a bargain at 35 dollars return) and off we went. We were a little confused when a few minutes into the journey the train started travelling in the opposite direction, towards where we had just come from. After a short pause, we set off again. Backwards and forwards we went for nearly an hour. It eventually became clear that we were not going back to the station, but this wa the method to climb the steep hill out of Cuzco. ... read more

Here we are in Aguas Calientes - a small villlage just down the hilll from Machu Picchu!! We have been hiking for the past 4 days straight, including today. Day 1 was what they call the easy route. And it was...compared to Day 2 at least. We hiked about 11 km that day and it was mainly flat with some old Inca ruins along the way. A team of about 16 porters, each carrying 25 kg on their backs, carried our duffle bags, food, tents...everything we needed. Every time we arrived to our campsite, our tents would be set up and dinner would be in the making..it was pretty amazing. We felt like we were being spoiled. Day 2 was termed the challenge day. The hike was 8 breathtaking km, literally. We climbed 3000 m to ... read more

We survived the Inca Trail. It was amazing. I don´t have the time to write about it just yet or to upload photos, but I will. The train from Aguas Calientes leaves in an hour for Cuzco. Lisa and I fly to Lima tomorrow and then catch our red eye back to the states friday night. We should be back in MN saturday evening after a nice long layover in Atlanta. Once at home with cable internet I will upload the rest of the pictures and write about the last week of my stay here in Peru. 9 weeks flew by. See everyone soon.... read more
