Cajamarca - Carnaval From the humid jungle to the mountainous, dairy capital, and largest Carnaval celebration in Peru we went. Cajamarca is definitely my favorite spot in Peru. It is absolutely beautiful and the people there are very kind. It is surrounded my green mountains, full of day hikes and pre inca ruins. It has an awesome plaza de armas, that is absolutely wild during Carnaval. Carnaval was full of parades, elaborate costumes, reynas, dancing, live music, parties in the plaza that went on all night long for 4 days with people singing and dancing while passing around bottles of warm, homemade liquor mixed with maracuya juice. The last day of Carnaval is a "mourning" celebration. Las viudas (widows), which are actually men dressed as old woman from each barrio compete to see who does the ... read more

Cajamarca From Lima we booked a flight on Star Peru Airlines and travelled to Cajamarca. Cajamarca is in northern Peru at an altitude of roughly 9000ft. The name Cajamarca means the place of the Caxa (pronounced casha) cactus. It was absolutely wonderful to arrive to a place that was green, the air was clean, and the view included trees, mountains, and farmland. When I stepped off the plane I could not stop smiling! Our first day we walked around town, taking in the sights and the scenery and admiring the ornate colonial churches. Later that day we went to Banios del Inca. The Banios (I spell it with ‘ni’ because I do not have the Spanish ‘n’) del Inca consists of a series of baths or hot tubs fed from the hot springs (158 degrees Fahrenheit). ... read more

Buses and taxis and little buses and cars. We have been travelling in all of the above to get from Vilcabamba to the border at La Balsa, then to Grand Buoya or something or other, and NOT to Pedro Ruiz, to arrive late and hot and tired in San Ignacio. But, we met an nice Australian bloke named Joel and it was good to have someone to compare notes with. Onwards to Chachapoyas... if we can get on the right bus or combi or taxi or mule or...something. ... read more

On Saturday I returned to Cajamarca having spent 5 days in a mountain community called Cadmalca near Chota. The bus journey the previous Sunday lasted 7 hours and we survived a rather perilous, 1-hour taxi ride up into the mountains before arriving finally at the Blue Poncho Lodge where we were welcomed by Celia, our wonderful provider for the week! The medical experience I gained was priceless! Having heard somewhat underwhelming reports from students who had already completed their stint in the remote mountain clinic my initial high expectations had been sadly lowered. After a quiet first day, during which I settled into the routine tasks of weighing and measuring babies and practising my Spanish numbers by filing away patient records(!), the village seemed to go crazy overnight and on the second day I dealt with ... read more

Although I felt SO much better on Monday after my amusing trip to the clinic on Sunday, I didn´t feel quite up to attending the hospital... not as a student at least! I did however make it to my Spanish class with Wilmar (my male Spanish tutor who´s commonly referred to as Wilma it would appear!). And that evening I joined Ian and the girls for a nourishing meal of consomé soup and coffee... Everything was to improve as the week went on! I was astonished, but thrilled, at how quickly my tonsilitis cleared up! By Tuesday I felt almost back to normal and was able to spend the whole morning in "Cirugia", the surgical department, at El Hospital Regional Cajamarca, before going to my Spanish class in the afternoon. Again we all went out for ... read more

I arrived in Cajamarca, a small city in the north of Peru, early last Saturday morning and was met by Juan Fransisco Chavez, my local tourguide and general hero! He introduced me to my host family - Anita, Julio, Richard and Diana - who live in a huge house very close to the centre of Cajamarca. It wasn´t long before I met Ian, a fellow medical student, who is also here for his elective and is staying in Anita´s house. We were introduced rather abruptly into the Peruvian culture as we joined Juan at Dr. Wilson´s street BBQ party! The food was incredible - without any doubt the best chicken I´ve eaten in my life - and the Spanglish banter was second to none! Having thoroughly broken the ice with the local doctors I felt ready ... read more

Just a quick message to say I´ve arrived safely in Cajamarca and have spent the first few days settling in and getting to know the city and surrounding area a bit. I´m due to start my medical placement tomorrow having had the first 3 days this week off on holiday because of Peru´s Independence Day celebrations and public holidays. Will add another, more detailed blog entry at the weekend with all my stories so far from this my 5th destination in 4 weeks! Love and besos, Ricardo x... read more

Well, as we bid farewell to the hot and humid tropics of the Amazon Basin and moved inland the scenery of Peru changed dramatically. On our bus journey from Tarapoto to Chachapoyas I was barely able to stop taking photos of what appeared to be awesome landscapes, but in fact turned out to be essentially the same shot of a mountain with clouds surrounding the very top, and although spectacular first hand the views just didn´t translate so well to our cheap point and click digital camera. My over zealousness meant that Jules had to spend at least an hour deleting many of the 120 photos of said hills and much to my chagrin and attempts to convince her that all the photos taken from a quick moving bus were of equal validity and high quality, ... read more

Joseph Conrad E' tempo di andare "off the beaten track"....

Cajamarca is another quite large town, set in the mountains and full of life. Steve from Washington DC, and Scott from Bosten both came with me to Cajamarca, and we stayed in a pretty cool hostel with a balcony over the plaza de Amaz. The first day we arrived roughly 6am and decided not to waste the day so firstly went to see the local hot springs - Los Banos del Inca. The springs were quite impressive, the actual springs you couldnt swin in because they were 70 degrees C - hot stuff! But we could swim in the pool which mixed colder water to make it a comfortable 28 degrees. After bathing for the morning, we decided to walk to a funery nich roughly 4km away. What seemed quite a good idea at first soon ... read more
