From Huaraz I took the bus to visit an old friend from my school days - Dave. We used to hang out together in the village when we were about 15 but I don't think I have seen him for about 10 years or more. I was interested to see how Cajamarca was as all the Peruvians I had mentioned it to has said it was lovely but its not quite on the Gringo trail. As it turned out Cajamarca was a nice little city in the mountains but I enjoyed it much more because I got to do lots of normal things like watch TV on a sofa, go to the cinema, download some new music from Dave, play with his daughter and go round to his sister in laws for lunch. I had a ... read more

So after our interesting nights sleep, we had a six hour bus ride to Cajamarca so of course by the time we got there all we could do was find a hostal (the owner of which seemed quite surprised we wanted to stay there!) and then go out for ice-cream (anyone see a pattern here?!) at, according to the LP, the best ice-cream in the North of Perú. It was good..but not a patch on Ec.! Decided we were the worst travellers in the world and we never do anything we plan, so hailed a passing mini-bus and headed 8km out of the city to the "Ventanillas de Otuzco". These are pre-Incan structures made up of hundreds of funerary niches built into the hillside. Our charming teeneag guide tried to explain, in Spanish how they ... read more

Six hour bus ride to Cajamarca so of course by the time we got there all we could do was find a hostal (the owner of which seemed quite surprised we wanted to stay there) and then go out for ice-cream. According to the all-knowing Lonely Planet the best ice-cream in the north of Peru. All very nice but no-where near as good as Ecuadorian ice-cream. Decided we were the worst travellers in the world in that we can never be bothered to do anything so hailed a passing mini-bus and headed 8km out of the city to the 'Ventanillas de Otuzco'. These are more pre-Incan structures made up of hundreds of funerary niches built into the hillside. Basically, a lot of holes cut into a rock face. Not quite sure how they fitted the bodies ... read more

Cajamarca Before I start this blog I would like to say Merry Christmas to all of you. Today is Christmas and it is very hard to be away from home. I am, however, grateful for the opportunities that have come my way to make this all happen. I miss everybody right now more than ever but hope that you all have great holidays. I wrote this next blog a while ago and right now I am in Cusco, Peru. I wanna give a couple shouts to my Mom, Dave and Tyler. My Mom is holding together the house and family in Lantzville, while my Dad has been nominated for the Hall of Fame in Victoria for racing! A once in a lifetime achievement! My bro is off to Salmon Arm in Feb to start school...I´m comin ... read more

the trip into peru was really cool, rather intense because we took the road less traveled, where people are still amazed by the presence of gringos. we went through alot of military occupied towns, made friends with some millitary guys who made sure we got through, read stories in english to a group of curious children (and a very drunk man) who were trying to learn english and helped them with their homework, and went through alot of really poor POOR cities and towns. Peru seems much poorer than ecuador. i have lots of story but am rather tired and blogged out. today we went up to the most incredible ruins, larger by 114 meters than machu pichu, but much less visited, reason being there is a very intense ride up alot of mountians to get ... read more
