Hi All, Now to continue from where I left off. Sorry about not saying "good-bye" with the last entry but in some places you have to pay to use the internet and the money ran out that you have to put into a control box to use some computers. Paraguay. I believe that I was at the stage where Patty, "Frisky's" brother came on the scene at the village of Cosme. He had been working in Australia for some 28 years in the building industry, in Qld. and N.S.W. He too was also another "Frisky" fathering many children to an number of women, I think he had 2 marriages. Paddy's English was good although heavily accented. He talked about this life in Australia and also the lives of the early settlers in Cosme. He could recall ... read more

Hi Everyone, As Mary has so far done all the blogs I thought that I should give it go, so here geos. I believe that Paraguay is our next adventure and what a surprise it turned out. PARAGUAY. Please bear with me as I explain the reasons why we went to Paraguay. Firstly it is not a well know counrty in Australia, but Australia has a connection with Paraguay that not many people know about- but now a short history about this country. Of all the countries in S.A. Paraguay is unique. On its flag it has two coats of arms-one on each side. There are two official languages spoken (Spanish and Guaranies) and it is very common to use both when they speak to each other. Since 1952 until 1989 it was ruled by a ... read more

Hi All, At 7.15 a.m. Mr. Woods, Mary and I set off for Cosme ,the second settlement of the Australian pioneers in Paraguay. This village is about 220Km. S.E. of Asuncion. We were traveling parallel to the railway line that the settlers used when setting up at New Australia. They got off at Villarrica then had to face a 3 days journey by ox-cart to their new life. The railway was closed about 15 years ago but the old stations and the odd old steam engine can still be found. Villarrica (pronounced Via-rica) is a large unattractive town but it is well known for its artists and musicians. Mr Wood's cousin is a very well known and famous cartoonist, although little known in Australia. After here the next port of call was Caazapa (Car ah zapa) ... read more

Dear Friends, I have spent one week in Paraguay, very fruitful for my future, and I think I can do with 1 post only. Well, the 1st 2 things you think of about Paraguay are: - Corruption and criminals paradise (not only the nazis) - Larissa Riquelme, the paraguyan model who got super famous at the last World Cup. Remember the phone ? So, From Rio de Janeiro I flew to Benuos Aires on the 16th, then to Asuncion in the evening. Basically I decided to go to Paraguay because we (Tonio and me) met some german guys in Bahia who talked about the business they conduct here. Funny story, the guys went for dinner @ Toni Pizza. When they realized Tonio speaks german, and the pizzas are very good, they came back twice the following ... read more

ASUNCION - DAY 1! After jumping into a taxi, we arrived at the bus station early hoping to pay our way onto a decent bus. The first one which seemed nice enough and the stickers on the side boasted AC and a DVD player to keep us happy for our 6hr journey. Something our Spanish translation books seemed to skip on was that in Paraguay AC doesn’t mean Air Conditioning instead that the windows open and DVD actually translates to large objects that stick out into the isle so you have something to bang your head on. It was also a bit of a shock that the previously quoted 6hrs was actually 9hr. Despite all this, the journey wasn’t too bad and went rather quick. We also got to take part in Paraguay’s world record attempt ... read more

On Sunday evening I began the infamous trans-Chaco route from Santa Cruz, which was reported as "30+" hours in my Lonely Planet -- and listed as an activity in the highlight section -- but I was encouraged by reports that the road had been improved since then. Furthermore, I was promised an 18-hour trip, with AC, full cama (bed) and TV/movies. Of course, all of that was a lie. At 2am we awoke to the passengers of another bus -- which had left on Saturday but gotten stuck because of the rain -- flooding onto the bus. While I felt fortunate enough to have a working bus, it still did not make for a comfortable trip, as I ended up standing for about 6 hours. Furthermore, the excess passengers caused several hour-long delays at the numerous ... read more

Thankfully at a reasonable hour we emerged the next day, passports at the ready (best border control yet - table tennis table to keep us amused while we waited) to head for our next destination, Bariloche in the Argentinian lake district. A very hot and long yet stunningly beautiful drive day took us past all 7 lakes, reminiscent of Canada in parts, before finally setting up camp some way from the town centre. Famous for its chocolate and skiing potential in the winter months, Bariloche is very Swiss with its steep sloping rooves, hearty food and general high level of cleanliness. Out of snowy season, the weather was relatively sunny with a distinct lack of white anywhere to be seen. Wandering around town Matt and I happened across a highly teutonic themed restaurant where we had ... read more
