Dear Friends,
I have spent one week in Paraguay, very fruitful for my future, and I think I can do with 1 post only.
Well, the 1st 2 things you think of about Paraguay are:
- Corruption and criminals paradise (not only the nazis)
- Larissa Riquelme, the paraguyan model who got super famous at the last World Cup. Remember the phone ?
So, From Rio de Janeiro I flew to Benuos Aires on the 16th, then to Asuncion in the evening.
Basically I decided to go to Paraguay because we (Tonio and me) met some german guys in Bahia who talked about the business they conduct here. Funny story, the guys went for dinner @ Toni Pizza. When they realized Tonio speaks german, and the pizzas are very good, they came back twice the following days !! "Es smackt sehr gut Toni". I joined them and then they explained us they bought some lands in Paraguay for reforestation and it was a very good long-term investment. As we went along pretty well, they gave us the contact details of a german guy in Paraguay.
Therefore I decided to go to Paraguay for
a week to have further discussion with the guy and see by myself. I am like Saint-Thomas.
I moved to Asuncion without even reaching the guy on the phone !! So the first 2 days were a bit boring, I visited Asuncion. But I could get in touch with the guy.
Then he sent a colleague to pick me up in Asuncion and we moved to Villarrica, about 2h30 drive from Asuncion.
I visited some lands were they grow Eucalyptus, and other ones where they feed beefs. In total I spent 3 days with the guy, I met all his family, his girlriends, the associates, and many more. We made it very "simple life" style, ie drinking beers (and a lot !! ) with the farmers, eating a beef freshly killed in the morning and grilled on skewers, talking hours about animals, trees, ... Super nice.
The guy could not speak very well english so we were discussing in english, german and spanish !! Seriously it was so strange for me ! I tried as much as possible in spanish, but if I couldnt find a word I was using german (despite my super limited skills and knowledge) and then
eventually english. The ultimate was of course italian, I mean speaking with my hands and loud....
Well, the country itself has nothing special. Nothing to do (outdoor activities) or visit, like monuments. Super boring.
The weather is amazing, super mega humid and hot (about 28deg all-year long). And when it rains, better not to be outside ! It is a real shower !! So you can imagine how everything grows super fast.
It was very interesting trip for business discussion. I have learnt a lot about the farm life. And somehow I think I might work with them in the future. Butthis is premature to talk about it...
Some facts:
- 7mio people, 60% are less than 30 years old.
- 2nd poorest country of South America after Bolivia, but an annual growth of 12% (2nd after Brazil and ahead of Peru)
- 80% of 2nd-hand cars come from Japan. They arrived in Chile, the steering is changed from RHD to LHD and -they are sent to Paraguay, Ecuador and Peru.
