Well I've been in Ecuador just on a week now and the sun has come out to play just 2 of those days which is apparently a lot for this time of the year - so we took it while we could get it out at at Montañitas which is a fantastic little surf town on the coast. Then sadly Christian was enjoying the party scene there too much so he decided to stay another week, where as I'm am now back in Guayaquil waiting for my flight for the Galapagos Islands tomorrow morning!!!!! I can't wait, but I'm going to have to, until after the cheesy, heart-throb Luis Miguel concert tonight at the Modelo Stadium. Should be a good night, I bumped into my french friend Olivier again out at the beach so we're going ... read more

From Cuenca, we took a bus to Loja with Claudia arriving at about 8:45 pm. The weather had turned pretty crap by the time we reached Loja, rain and fog. We knew Vilcabamba was pretty close to Loja but were having no luck with taxi drivers who seemed to be quoting us a pretty hefty price. In the end we managed to bargain a bit with one of them getting a whole three dollars off the price!! We eventually arrived at a hostel that had been recommended to us, with a swimming pool and private lodges and great views called Izcayluma. We were a bit surprised at how deserted the place was with no people, bar or restaurant, but in the pouring rain we were in no mood to argue and paid the taxi driver. We ... read more

So, arriving in Cuenca late we checked into the Hostal Tinku where Claudia (another Galápagos friend) was staying. After marvelling at the spectacular noisiness of the place with the barking dogs and children we went for a brief excursion to get some food and thought "hmmm, this is a nice place". In the morning we met up with Claudia who was recovering from a rather nasty form of stomach bug and went for a walk via the Café Austria and the market - nothing to report there. A Real Panama Hat As part of our sojourn we came across a marvellous shop - that of Alfredo Pulla, a hatter since the age of 6 (now in his 80s). He showed us to his upstairs showroom from the main shop downstairs (with hundreds of hats hanging ... read more

Ok, so after arriving from Baños we spent one night in Riobamba in a hostel called Los Shyris near the train station. We bumped in to Stuart, an Australian guy that we did the Guagua hike with in a restaurant that night. He was in Riobamba for the same reason as us, to do the Devil's Nose train journey to Alausi - sitting on the roof of the train. This is a train run pretty much solely for tourists and one of the few (maybe only) train routes still in operation in Ecuador. The restaurant that we met Stuart in wasn´t great so we warned him against it (a far from accurate lonely planet recommendation). Next morning he kept us two seats on top of the train, we got there for about 6am, a bit later ... read more

First forray into SA bus travel So, we met a girl called Mellisa at the Secret Garden and she was going to Baños that morning too; So we thought it would be a good idea to go together seeing how paranoid people get when talking about the Quito Terminal Terrestre (or Baghdad as some people would have you believe). Anyway, we managed to buy our tickets with our lives and possesions still intact (a miracle if you listen to some paranoid nancies). Well, a rather uneventful journey later and we arrived in Baños and found our Hostal, Plantos y Blanco (Plants and White) which seemed nice enough. Later we checked out the hot spring baths under the waterfall but decided against it due to the large number of local kids frolicking - early in the morning ... read more

Ok bods, probably one of the more interesting ones I hope - if you like wildlife and beautiful islands, that is. So we departed Quito on friday 8th October so this is where I begin. Friday - getting there Flight to Galapagos Baltra Airport via Guayaquil, uneventful. Guayaquil looks a bit swampy (Ecuador´s largest city - Quito is the capital but a bit smaller), so quite glad we´re not stopping there at any point. On arrival at Baltra airport we took some cool pictures of the mysterious-looking volcanic island-rocks. Paid the $100 dólar park entrance fee and met our guide, the rather more senior and charismatic than expected "César", to take us to the good ship "Amigo". We took a bus for 5 minutes to a canal (the bit of sea between Baltra island and Santa ... read more

Our first week has gone so quickly, we have had between 4 and 6 hours per day of Spanish lessons, so no lazing about in the sun for us - yet! Quito is an interesting spot, it is a big city with all the pollution and dangers that come with a big city but it has given us some giggles during the week, not least the sight of a Lada with a Mercedes badge! We have spent some time walking around Quito exploring the sights, practising our spanish and trying out the local food - almeurzas and empanandas. We have only once had any unpleasant side effects! We also visited a populated volcanic crater. We have visited La Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world, 0 0´0´´), both the official incorrect line and the unofficial ... read more

I was assigned by the company I work for to an audit in Colombia and Ecuador for 2 weeks, and the work was going to end a day before my 30th anniversary. I didn´t know if I was going to go back home to celebrate it with my friends and family, since I didn´t wanted to spend that day alone, so I thought... if I am going to be away from home on my birthday, I need to do something amazing, and that was the moment when Galapagos Islands came to my mind. I had one the the most incredible experiences of my life during that trip.... read more

Ok, random trivia. The Galapagos Islands are officially named the Archipelago de Colon; they are part of Ecuador and sit 960km off the Ecuadorian coast. They are also about 90% national park. The only way to walk on the islands is with a Park Naturalist/guide. These islands were the inspiration for Darwin’s Origin of Species. The islands are famed for their vast array of wildlife, much of it endemic. (Pick word I learned). The islands are most famous for the Giant Tortoises that are found there, but I think the birds provided a more spectacular show. But I get ahead of myself. I still had to get there and that was an adventure in and of itself. I was currently some 900 nautical miles away in Panama. (One nautical mile is about 1.15 statute miles … ... read more

Ecuador - 5 Weeks I spent about 5 weeks in Ecuador stopping at Guayaquil which was a dump, then Monteverde for a week in a hammock in this nice beach town. From Monteverde I went to Quito, which has some nice areas to visit. I spent several weeks in Quito as I lost my passport and had to wait for another one, during my stay here I saw some students protesting and I got too close and experienced tear gas although quite diluted. I travelled, via Ambato, to Banos another cute little town situated at the foot of the active volcano, Tungurahua, I climbed the volcano on foot but didn't make it to the top as the ash was quite intense, there were farmers brushing ash from the grass so the cattle could eat and one ... read more
