Was bisher geschah...

Sorry that I did not continue with the weekend, but the Galapagos Islands are bit more important ;) Soo, last sunday I decided to have a look on Quito. The so called Teleferico is a lift on the outside of Quito which starts at 2850m and brings one for 4.90$ to the Cruz Loma plateau (4050m). From here one could have a nice view on the city, if there were no clouds. In my case the weather changed typically rapidly, because in the morning there was blue sky which was the reason for me to go there, but when I arrived on the top around 10am the view was gone. View barely 100m. However it's possible to do a 3hrs hike to the summit of Rucu Pichincha (4627m). So to have at least something for my ... read more

At 6:30am my colleague Gabriel and I headed of with our bikes, destination Mindo (ca. 65km) This time I rented a bike from a store next door which was way better than the ones from my work. Tall enough, disc brakes and in general in a good shape. Due to the early time the streets of Quito were quite empty. Again we took the speedway with our bikes to get as fast as possible to the foothills of the Pichincha. From here on we took a pickup which brought us to the top from where we could start our downhill ride. On the pickup we met a guy who sells normally cocktails, but we decided that it's a little bit too early for a nice Mojito. So, down we went. Actually I am not really sure ... read more

Papallacta is one of my favorite places in Ecuador, Its wilderness is breathtakingly beautiful and another visit was a must. 6 of us took off on a Sunday morning towards the park with the intention of walking the pamero from the antennas which are about 20kms from the village of Papallacta and double back to the springs. We left the car at the thermas and took a truck taxi back to the antennas paying the $2 entrance fee at the rangers station on the way up. The park is called Cayambe-Coca and covers a huge terrain running from Papallacta to Coca, it is visually stunning and thankfully protected. As clouds tumbled across the sky we started along the trail, When starting at the antennas the trail is relatively easy as most of it is flat, gently ... read more

For the rest of my life, one image will stay in my mind. Sadness and joy swirl like paint to create that picture. It’s the first and last image I saw of the Waorani village, deep in the Ecuadorian jungle, where I lived for four days. We have no idea what we are getting ourselves into. The banks are thick with trees and jungle plants. Some reach the sky. We search for birds or monkeys above our heads. Sometimes we let our hands dangle in the spray of cool river water. The water so muddy the tree branches disappear as soon as they reach it. Every time we round another bend, I think we might be there. I look eagerly, only to see more jungle. Then the river turns again. We can see the clearing. Then ... read more
