Geo: -0.373471, -78.1363There was a fountain in the courtyard outside our window, which you could hear during the night. When we awoke in the morning, the fountain sounded much louder. We then realized that it was a heavy downpour we were hearing -- not the fountain. The forecast had been for rain, but we'd hoped it too would prove wrong. The widower on our trip -- Sally -- was a real pistol and we all enjoyed getting to know her. We had already taken to calling her "Sunshine Sally," as she was taking credit for our fine weather to date. As we gathered for breakfast, after making the mad dash through the mud to the restaurant, we all gave her a good ribbing for the rain. Ever confident, she praised the "liquid sunshine" and assured us ... read more

A new year, a new country. We spent the best part of a day travelling into southern Ecuador from Piura. The ride was particularly scenic, with the landscape crumpled up like the front end of a Renault Laguna after a ram raid, there were plenty of valleys to navigate. It's all very green, some greens look a little surreal, like, they'd been added by a special effects team at a Hollywood studio. The whole place reminded me of Wales or Lake District, except on steroids and scaled up to gargantuan proportions. And there was't anyone called Dai with an abundance of sheep following him. And with sunshine and 25C heat. The border crossing was no problem which I'd not expected, and we got chatting to an Argentine priest who pointed us in the right direction at ... read more

Whew! That was a long trip getting to Ecuador. Left my house in Victoria, Canada at about 5:45 pm. After three flights, two buses, a ferry, and a taxi. ride, it was roughly 8:45 or nearabouts when I finally checked into our hostel, Casa Helbling, in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Sister and mum rode with me on the bus out to the ferry, to see me off. When we got on the bus, Mum proudly announced to the bus driver 'She's going to Ecuador!" The driver asked incredulosly, to which she replied "Because she can!". A girl overhead this and came up to me on the ferry to chat about it. Turned out she was on her way to Indonesia so I gave her some tips on Bali. Went when I was ten, so couldn't ... read more

Geo: -0.373471, -78.1363It's Sunday and we just had to get out of town so we hired a driver to take us to Termas de Papallacta for the day. It's touted as Ecuador's most luxurious hot springs. To get there we passed through some cool little towns and somewhere along the way got a view of 5,897 meter (19,347 ft) Cotapaxi, too--one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. The drive over the pass was really lovely even though the mountains were shrouded in uncompromising clouds and I didn't get to see Volcan Antisana at 18,875 feet. Still, the pass was something to see--that high altiplana is so different from any of our high mountains. Course, we don't have anything that high in Montana--even our mountaintops are lower than this pass.Papallacta itself sits at 3,300 meters, or ... read more

Wow. Where did we leave off? Oh yeah, i just been on the beach and then had a wonderful time in Cuenca. First of all, fun fact of the day. Ecuador is not a place which is well known for its punctuality. In fact, it is typical for people to be up to 30 minutes late for an engagement. To combat this, a group started a Punctuality Campaign a few years back. After all, economists had realized that businesses were losing significant amounts of money based on this cultural norm! So the group chose the Olympic Speedwalking champ of Ecuador to be the spokesperson for the campaign. I mean, who better than this guy who can get places really, really fast? The best part of this story is that they threw a huge pro punctuality public ... read more

Myri ... read more

Ja, also ... read more
