Day 1 After an overnight bus from Banos in which the heating was too hot and we were pressed up against the cold windows to cool down we arrived in Lago Agrio around 5:30ish / 6ish feeling pretty bloody knackered after a typically bad nights sleep on the bus. The pick up time from the hotel was 9:30am so we had to try and stay awake and kill some time. We got chatting to a girl from Berlin who was doing the same tour as us and had coffee and breakfast. I went to buy a poncho which was more entertaining than it should have been. After being told the one hanging up outside the front of the shop was $4, when I gave him a $20 dollar note the cashier proceeded to tell me that ... read more

From Quilotoa we were then off on a long and winding trip to Lago Agrio in NE Ecuador via Latacunga and Quito. The trip included two trucks and two buses totalling 15 hours with Lago Agrio being the jumping off point for spending 4 days in the Amazon jungle in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. We had planned to continue south from Quilotoa to Tena but had read that it is no longer primary forest and most of the wildlife has left the area hence the long backtrack! Once we met up with our tour, we had another 3 hours on a bus and 3 more hours down river in a motorized canoe to reach the Caiman Lodge. At least the boat trip involved actively looking for wildlife and didn’t disappoint. We saw 3 types of monkeys ... read more

Poet, novelist and travel writer William Graham lives in Stowe, Vermont. His latest children’s book was inspired by the Amazon: url=https://www.audible.com/pd/Teens/Olivia-Turners-Amazing-Amazon-Adventure-Audiobook/B079THBCW3?ref=a_a_search_c3_lProduct_1_1&pf_rd_p=e81b7c27-6880-467a-b5a7-13cef5d729fe&pf_rd_r=FDN18PXSFTA3FS7V66SM&Olivia Turner’s Amazing Amazon Adventure. Over my head a brilliant blue morpho butterfly danced in the humid jungle air. It was a splash of blue against a curtain of endless green. In the trees monkeys jumped from branch to branch like Olympic gymnasts. In the sky, more species of birds than I could ever hope to know flew through the vast Amazon sky. These images represent the beauty of the Amazon rainforest. But as I came to discover on a recent trip to the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador, the forest is not always benign. Plants, animals and... read more

I missed the opportunity to try Ayahuasca in Peru. Getting to Iquitos wasn't a problem. The problem was time. Well, it wasn't so much about time either, now that I think about it. I felt that Iquitos was too touristy. After finding out that it was possible to try Ayahuasca in Ecuador, I decided to do it there. Tena is the gateway into Amazonia. It was humid when I arrived and remained humid until I left. After checking into my guesthouse, I looked around town for Ayahuasca. I cooked most of the time while i was in Tena. The food prices were a bit out of my price range. I made pasta. I stumbled into a tour agency and inquired about Ayahuasca. It was advertised on the window. The guy who worked/owned the place was Ecuadorian. ... read more

Hola Dinamarca!

Hello, I spent a couple nights in Tena which is at the border of the Jungle, as you know me and insects, didn´t want to get too deep in there.ç I asked for a 1 day tour just to see what the forest is like here, but Tena is not touristic at all so I ended up on my own with the guide which was nice. We grabbed the local bus in the morning and started walking with our rubber boots on, we walked through the secondary forest which consists of all the smaller vegetation and plantations, where we met a couple of locals living there, in the forest. They took us to their home for a break before the husband came to guide us through the primary forest, =the big trees and no paths. So ... read more

Our journey to the Amazon started with getting back from the Galapagos. After almost missing check in for the flight it turned out it was delayed by 4 hours instead! Anyway once back in Quito we headed towards the bus station where we decided not to catch a night bus to Lago Agrio (the place where our jungle tour started) and stayed at a hostel near the station. The next morning after getting a good amount of sleep we started the 7 hour journey. Now we had read that Lago Agrio was a bit of a hole and a little unsafe (due to the proximity to the most dangerous Colombian border crossing and high number of Westerners passing through on the way to the jungle!) and what we had read was pretty accurate. The hotel we ... read more

The lead up to our adventure in the Cuybeno Reserve was nothing short of painful. After enduring a late night (made bearable by the hospitality of Gina, her husband and his delicious spiced tequila) we rushed onto an overnight bus to Lago Agrio which we reached earlier than expected (3am) in a location that was definitely not their central bus terminal as we had hoped. We staggered down the street eventually finding a bus stop right next to the Hotel where we would later meet our tour group. Now Lago Agrio is not somewhere any sane person wants to be during daylight but sitting at a bus stop in the dark pretending to wait for a nonexistent bus in an effort to look less conspicuous and therefore less of a target, all the while hoping that ... read more

Part of me selfishly wants to keep Baeza a secret from you dear readers as I have fallen hopelessly in love with this place. I am sitting here wondering to myself whether “if I share this place will I lose something from it?” nevertheless I promised to blog and blog I shall maybe you will see why I so desperately want to keep Baeza for myself. The bus ride there presented us with turn after turn of mindblowing scenery. The mountains rose up to meet the road as far below rivers pounded around seemingly every turn. Eventually around another corner and a small bridge we arrived in Baeza central. First stop for us was the convenience store, water on our thirsty minds. The owner was incredibly helpful offering to assist us with absolutely anything we needed ... read more

Who never dreamed of seeing anaconda in wild? or taking a boat trip on the river full of lovely crocodiles and piranhas? Of course we did!!! And that's how we got into this incredible world full of disgusting spiders (all very dangerous), tarantulas, snakes and other unknown creatures... After 13 hours bus ride and 3 hours boat ride we happily arrived to our lodge (very basic and very eco-friendly hotel). Our guide offered us to take a refreshing river bath (of course forgetting to mention about Candiru fish) which we (luckily for Ernesto) did not take. Still very excited we took a night walk with a guide through the jungle... It was a very interesting walk even though there were two bad sites: 1. I do not see much in the dark 2. My Spanish (at ... read more
