Today we signed up in Banos for an organised 1 day tour of the Amazonian jungle basin, as this was clearly the only practical way to effectively view this area. We were very much aware that we were only on the fringe of this enormous jungle area, and that unless we were prepared to take a minimum 8 hour local bus ride further inland (which we weren’t!), we were going to be limited on the wildlife we could expect to see. It was a long day (12 hours), but we were fortunate with the weather, given rain was really set in each of the day before and the day following our trip. We were accompanied for the day by Sixto, our English-speaking Ecuadorian guide, and Julie, a delightful lass from Dublin, who is clearly very ... read more

Oh my goodness, not sure where to start. Maybe I should reintroduce myself first under my new official title " Sinead of the Amazon!" This is now how I would like to be addressed as I am officially a jungle Jane equal! I´m very sorry for the lack of internet activity, I´m sure many of you have suffered sleepless nights as a result. I have, however , been stuck in the back of beyond for the past two weeks. I arrived in Puyo on Monday 3rd of September feeling very alone and vulnerable, due to the fact that this was actually the first bus journey I had taken on my own since my arrival in Ecuador. It didn't´t help that the bus broke down about 1hour into the 4 hour journey and I didn't´t have a ... read more

I arrived in Ecuador having just finished volunteering in the Dominican Republic working in the National Aquarium. It had been 3 years since I had last been in South America and there was a nice feeling of returning to something familiar. This was my first time in Ecuador but the similarities with other South American countries (especially Peru) were evident. After seeing the sites of Quito I made my way down the Andes to Puyo. I had booked a volunteer project with an animal rescue centre whilst I was in the Dominican and didn’t really know what to expect. I was met at the bus station by Gloudina and was taken to into the jungle (the bus broke down twice along the way and I thought to myself “I remember this!”) Walking up the path to ... read more

Now I have gone and done it, I am under 160lbs. That was my limit for weight-loss. I admit it fully, I am too skinny. I just submitted some stool samples for the nurses, so after they get done testing my terds I'll know whether I have parasites or not and whether they are causing me to feel a little sick these last couple weeks. I just completed two days of training for PC's Peer Support network. I am now a trained PC volunteer counselor. And....I was elected President of the group - yippee. Seriously, it was a good training session and was fun to get out of Puyo for a couple days and head into the mountains in the north of Ecuador. The landscape reminded me a lot of Arizona. Hot, dry, and lots of ... read more

So Montezuma´s Revenge has hit me. I was sick the week of the kid´s camp then I got better. However, the last couple of days I have not felt that great. I am supposed to go to a peer support training session in Ibarra this weekend and I have yet to make the decision on whether to go or not. My gut feeling - pun intended - is to not go, however, the Peace Corps nurses will be there so I am assuming that they will take excellent care of me. So, this week has seen more of the same craziness. Matt and Heather came into town last Friday to spend a long weekend with Sue and I. Their trip to Puyo was slightly delayed due to a landslide near Baños. They had to get out ... read more

I apologize to all the dedicated blog readers out there for my tardiness in writing a new blog entry. To be honest, I have been swamped with work - sometimes I feel like I don´t even have time to stop and think about what I have to do - my body and mind just go from one item of work to the next as though I am a drone programmed to keep doing work for my counterpart and unable to say ¨No, I don´t have time to do that!¨ Anyhow, Sue and I did manage to free up enough time in our lives to make a short weekend trip to Mindo with our friends Heather and Matt. We stayed in the El Monte ecolodge with them and it was absolutely stunning. Mindo is set in the ... read more

hello my dear friends, I'm giving you the last Ecuador update, since I'm back in Belgium. Since the last time we met I have been preparing the exposition on Kichwa women clothing "Warmikunapak Churana, Runa Awaykuna". It has been a really interesting experience and since my collegues always start things to late, quite stressful as well: making inventories, putting up the exposition, making tags on the clothes and displaying information on the different pieces. In the end we got things together. The exposicion opened on the 6th of August and is running until the 8th of September in de Museum de la Ciudad, Riobamba. I took some great pictures of an 125 old Kichwa women and had a full schedule of meeting up with my friend Winchy and giving tango classes. I roamed some of the ... read more

Just so you know, the Earthquake that hit Peru had no effect on us in Puyo. It was a major Earthquake and Peace Corps put us on an alert for Tsunami´s. I had to chuckle when I got this text message seeing as how the Andes mountains - the second tallest in the world - are between us in Puyo and the Ocean. If we were really threatened by a Tsunami in Puyo then clearly the rest of the world would be screwed. In all fairness, it was a blanket warning to all volunteers - there are quite of few on the coast of Ecuador. Luckily the Tsunami was a reported 10 inches - so no lives were lost. So, I haven´t written much in the last week - I have been busy - SURPRISE!!! Things ... read more

Well thank goodness that my blogs were saved. I was receiving calls and messages from the Smithsonian - they had been planning to archive my blog entries as an American Treasure, when the blogs were potentially lost, they put their web bloodhounds to work and helped me find each and every one. Usually they reserve Presidential Libraries for former President’s, however, there has been some talk in Congress about an appropriation’s bill for constructing the Jeremy King Library. I am a little humbled by this, but even more concerned. I don’t think I have enough material to fill the library. I have my Ecuador blogs, a travel journal from Australia, a box of love notes from my middle school days, most of my papers from Denison and Ohio State Universities, a few letters of correspondence between ... read more

Well, I am happy to announce that all my messages are now officially accounted for. I used up approximately one full day of work to get everything back in order. I am thankful for any and all that took the time to help me out. People have suggested that I switch sites, however, the vibe on Travelblog is for all the current subscribers to stay put in support of the guy who runs the site. He was devastated at the potential loss of data and did everything he could to help out us bloggers. I am staying put at travelblog.org for now. Peace from Puyo, Jeremy... read more
