If I could give this year a defining word (in my personal experience) I'd say the word is: "Colombia." Not only did Disney just release a new movie last month about Colombia titled "Encanto," which honestly blew my mind, but we also got to take a whirl wind trip all around Colombia. I got to finally meet my blood relatives that live on the Colombian coast. Meeting them actually brought me so much closure about who I truly am, because unlike most of my Colombian-American peers, I was a late bloomer getting to know my second country, my extended family, and my roots. Heute verbrachten wir den vormittag mit Reiseplanung. Meine Eltern hatten sich entschieden, mich zu Weihnachten besuchen zu gehen, und morgen sollte meine Mutter in Quito landen, deshalb wollten wir dorthin. Nur lagen noch ca. 1000km und eine Grenze zwischen uns und Quito. Wir entschieden uns, nachmittags loszufahren - dann sollten wir morgen früh in Ipiales, einer kolumbianischen Grenzstadt, sein. Dort könnten wir eine schöne Kirche anschauen und dann zu der Grenze fahren. Hinter der Grenze könnten wir dann einen Bus nach Quito nehmen, wo wir laut Plan dann morgen abends ankommen sollten. Heute machten wir einen kleinen Spaziergang zu einer Kaffeplantage. Dort nahmen wir eine Führung, die interessanter war, als eine Führung durch eine Kaffeeplantage zunächst klingt. Die Plantage hat sich dem komplett organischen Anbau von Kaffee verschrieben - so verwenden sie nur selbsgemischte Pestizide etc. Damit die Kaffeepflanzen Schatten haben, stehen auf der Plantage Bananen-, Patacon- und Mangobäume. Die Früchte werden kompostiert und als Dünger verwendet. Avocadobäume regulieren den Wasserhaushalt im Boden, Zitrusfrüchte entziehen dem Boden Säure. Gegen Insekten wird eine selbsgebaute Falle verwendet: Eine 1L-Plastikflasche hat seitlich mittig ein Loch. Der unterste Teil der Flasche ist mit Wasser gefüllt, von oben hängt ein kleines Fläschchen auf Matrioschka-art in der Flasche. Im Fläschchen ist ein Sirup, gemischt mit alkohol, der stark duftet. The Valle de Cocora, with its 60 meter high wax palm trees towering above you backed by green countryside and jungles. It's definitely a place to visit and that's why most people do! Salento is the place to base yourself for the Valle. Its a small town with colourful buildings and a place to slow down and relax...if you have the time! The colours are great and create a joyful and friendly atmosphere to the town. There are plenty of hostels and restaurants in Salento, just make sure when you visit that you check when the national holidays are. We happened to visit at the same time as the Colombian Independence Holiday and almost couldn't get any accommodation. It also meant that visiting the palm trees was more noiser and busier than we would have liked. ... read more

Sweet Salento (29/04/2018-02/05/2018) Salento: an incredibly charming, quaint colonial town in the heart of Colombia's coffee region. Known for it's friendly locals, world-class hiking, and an explosive game you'll not want to miss out on. Our "5 hour" bus ride turned into an 8 hour ride. Typical. The bus was long, the leg room was minimal (I couldn't even get my legs in front of me, and had them sticking out in the isle the whole journey), and the bends were very bendy. Therefore napping was not an option, sadly. But at least I had a seat.. one guys seat had totally broken, so he removed it and sat uncomfortably on his bag the whole journey, much to his friends amusement. Poor guy.
