We've been enjoying ourselves immensely in Colombia that writing seemed distracting or just too demanding. But with Amei laid up with the flu, I've found time to catch up on our trip from Cartagena to Bogota. In the kitchen of our peaceful hostel Adanandyami in the Candalaria section of Bogota, I'll recap the past few weeks as briefly and futile as that might be. Mompox being about a ten hour bus ride away, required and early morning departure from Cartagena. No problem. Up at five, out the door by five thirty and into a taxi to the bus terminal by six. Typical travel timetables. Colombian bus companies compete fiercely for your business, yelling from their cubby holes to choose their line. With a little time, I discovered direct service as opposed to multiple changes and stops, pick ... read more

Day 187 Sunday 15th April Both woke up with hangovers cursing Tibo for pouring so much beer down our throats, not that we needed to be encouraged. It was so great catching up with him last night but drinking so much on an empty stomach and after our long trek just about killed us. I still have no idea how we stayed awake till midnight talking when we were so shattered. We somehow fell out of bed and got out to breakfast hoping that magically it would make us feel better, and it did marginally. Today was always pencilled in as a recover day and after last night it wasn’t going to be any other way. After our small feed we handed over our two large bags of wet smelly clothes to the hotel ... read more

My guidebook told me that the travel to Mompox was long and exhausting, but I read on the Internet that there was a new road, so I thought it would not be too bad and since I really wanted to see Mompox... I talked another kitesurf babe into coming with me ("there will be no wind anyway, the weather forecast is lousy..." ;o) The trip there was really long, and really exhausting. Partly because you have to take a bus, then a boat and then a car. But mostly because of the heat. Cartagena is a very warm and humid place, but since it is close to the ocean, at least sometimes there is a sea breeze, and you can always jump into the warm ocean. In Mompox, there is no wind, and the "playa" of ... read more

Well, I finally made it to Mompos with my new companion Carlos. Now for anyone wanting to go there I highly recomend staying at La Casa Amarilla. It is a fantastic hostel and is of a really high standard with really friendly staff, great rooms and even has an English owner (sorry but it is nice to be able to speak english as well as my terrible spanish) and is in a house which is 100s of years old. Mompos is 250km from Cartagena and as you will now understand very difficult to get to. It is bordered by the Magdelena river on one side and vast swamps on the other. But, it is well worth the trip. I think one of the (many) reasons I had wanted to visit Colombia was because of Gabrielle Garcia ... read more

When I was in Taganga I had been kicking myself for leaving a bag in Cartagena because had I not I would have taken an entirely different route back to Bogota. I am really pleased that I did not as I would have missed out on the best journey ever!! My initital plan was to take 2 days getting from Cartagena to Bucumaranga (Via a town called Mompos) and then stop in a few places on my way to Bogota - funny how things work out. This trip that I had decided to do had been outlined in the Lonely Planet and it said you can catch an 8 hour bus to Mompos (also known locally as mompox) or you can go the more interesting way of a bus, boat and collectivo to get to Mompos. ... read more

Hola! Zuerst gelangen ... read more
