Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto Pinochet, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

For the very first time we see absolutely no differences in landscape as we cross a border - its just one continuous stretch of desert running from southern Peru to northern Chile. To cross the border you need to complete a vehicle transit form in quadruplicate - these are not available at the border you have to get them from the taxi rank in Tacna, the last town before the border!! The border is very plush - its was wooden huts when I passed by 15 years ago and got involved in a tuna smuggling ring. Now its big modern buildings, [View Full Entry]

Vik's bit: So an uncomfortably long journey brought us to Santiago, capital of Chile and home to about one-third of the population there. Suitably sized in order to hold all that folk, it spreads itself within the confines of the mountains that surround it. The city bustles, but does not overwhelm, and we spent our days enjoying the plazas, the coffee and the seafood. The plazas provided random opera performances and other such treats, and the coffee shops a different kind of entertainment. Turns out that purchasing coffee is a risky business in Santiago. Luring you in with their very or [View Full Entry]

On our last day in the Atacama desert we had the whole morning to do whatever we wanted to. I decided to go sand boarding with Lizzy, Sam, Sonni and Lindsay. I got up at 8 to eat breakfast and we had to be to the sand boarding place by 9. When we arrived at the place nobody was there and it looked closed but we were a little early. A guy that worked at the restaurant across the street knew the people so he called them to tell them we were waiting. A lady showed up pretty quickly. We paid [View Full Entry]

Day 4 was an early one! We got a wake up call at 4 a.m. I yelled at Catie to answer it since it was by her bed. She was just going to ignore it. She answered it but then struggle to hang up the phone. It was entertaining. It was too early for hotel breakfast so I just ate a banana that I had. I had some Coca tea while we were waiting in the lobby for the bus so I wouldn´t get altitude sickness. I sat by Christina on the bus. It was a long, extremely bumpy, off-road ride. We didn´t have much to do on day 5. I got up at 9 and ate breakfast with Christina and Catie. After breakfast Profe Triana had a little chat with us and told us that we had to change rooms since we were too loud the night before. We had to be out of our rooms so they could be cleaned and we also had to wait for our new rooms to be cleaned. While we waited I walked to a store with Catie and Jess B. I got an empanada , some doritos, and a popsicle. We returned to the [View Full Entry]

Terribly behind on this blog, with no real excuse. Due to a nationwide teachers' strike over a historical debt, my school hasn't held classes since last Thursday. It seems like a tricky situation and one on which I won't comment except to say that I certainly hope it gets resolved. A few weekends ago I took a day trip to get in touch with my Coffey heritage. I didn't quite make it to Ireland, but I did get to go into an old coal mine in Lota, a town along the coast a bit north of Lebu. Lota has a reputation [View Full Entry]

The bus journey from Bariloche in Argentina to Pucon in Chile has to be one of the most beautiful trips in the world. For 2 hours wecruised around mountain roads going through lush forests, passing crystal clear blue lakes, past sheer granite mountains and finally through the snow covered mountain pass across the border. The small towns that lay on the Argentinian side of the border were just idyllic. They were all based around the amazing lakes, almost entirely made of log cabins in the forests and large birds of prey circled overhead. They were stunning. I cant quite say the [View Full Entry]

Tues, Oct 20 We got up pretty early, so we had breakfast and jetted to the bus station. I brought my 1 and 1/2 liter of water, figuring that it would be enough. We had about an hour till the bus came, so in the meantime we tried hitch-hiking. It didn't really work, but oh well! Half hour bus ride - we get to Toconao, and it is just deserted. Only a few people were outside, but it was just like a ghost town with nothing open. We went to where there were walls and irrigation canals built by the Incans. [View Full Entry]

We had to leave our hotel really early to make our flight to Calama. Our flight left at 7 a.m. so we needed to get to the airport early. We left the hotel around 5 a.m. I got up and made eggs for the myself and the girls in my room. Since we were leaving so early we had to miss the hotel breakfast. Since it was so early in morning there wasn´t any traffic so it didn´t take too long to get to the airport. We breezed through check in and security and soon were on our way to Calama.
