Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto Pinochet, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

So when we first arrived in Chile, way back in May, we arrived amidst a massive, country-wide teacher strike. The day that we were shipped off to our host familys, June 6th, was the day that the teachers reached a compromise with the Chilean government, thus ending the strike, just in time for us to start teaching on Monday. After three weeks of no school, my students were reluctant to say the least, to return. But return they did, helping me to start my six months here with a bang. Although I have asked my host mom many times why they [View Full Entry]

so yummy.

"W" South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine
Just back from 5 days hiking the W Trail in the Torres del Paine. My words and pictures can't tell or show how fantastic this place is, its a real wonderland. We were lucky enough to experience the whole range of Patagonian weather - it started sunny, then we had gale force winds (strong enough to blow you off your feet !!!) and a blizzard, then overcast, then 15cm of snow, then complete calm with blue sunny skies and finally clear blue skies and more gale force winds. At times we were in T shirts at others we were in thermals, [View Full Entry]

We arrived in La Serena at 5.30pm on Wednesday 14 October and the three of us walked to our hostel. We stayed in a nice little triple room in the gardens of 'Maria’s Casa'. Chile was playing Ecuador at 7pm so we found a bar with a big screen and ordered a couple of pitchers of Cristal beer. There was even a TV crew in the bar filming the crowd of people anytime something exciting happened. Chile won the game and celebrations followed but nothing like that of Santiago 4 days earlier. We went for dinner in a local restaurant but [View Full Entry]

Week 8 South America » Chile » Biobío » Concepción
Tues, Oct 6 Today I had class from 10-12. It seems to me that every class I have been to is interesting, because I learn something every day since it's in a different language. That is one of the reasons I was always inspired to learn spanish - because it challenged me. Afterwards, I went to get my Chillean ID, and then returned home for lunch. After lunch, I talked to my brother on skype for 2 hours. That was nice. He mocked me a little bit when he made some ramen noodles; I never thought i'd miss ramen, haha :P. [View Full Entry]

First: Origins of the title - I am still mixing my limited Japanese with my even more limited Espanol by asking Doko (where in Japanese) instead of Donde when asking Where something is....sounds the same, right? Another tip for those that aren't use to fizzy or gaseous water...don't buy the blue capped water...its agua con gas. When you are in a rush and quickly buy water, forget that South Americans like water with gas, it makes for an interesting introduction to your neighbor on the bus after the bus has shaken the bottle up a bit! Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar This was a long weekend in Chile. They were celebrating el día de la madre cristiana, the day of the Christian mother or Saint Mary's Day. Ben, Nick, and I decided to spend a day at Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar which is only about an hour and a half from Caldera near the port town of Chañaral. We arrived in Chañaral at about 10:00am on Saturday. From the bus station we took a colectivo to the park which is about 30 minutes away. On the way we planned our day and decided to go to [View Full Entry]

Stuck in the desert South America » Chile » Atacama
Well... Just our luck! We got stuck in San pedro de atacama. Porque? We arrived on a Saturday and wanted to take the bus to Argentina on Sunday, but it was sold out and the next bus didn´t leave until Tuesday. Good thing we had our "travelling family" (the group from salar de uyuni) to keep us company. So we ended up staying in a dorm with the family. 8 beds for 6 people! Hooray we got the whole room to ourselves... So we thought. Halfway through the day, we had a new roomie, Sketchy Francois. Lets just say he enjoyed [View Full Entry]
