Our port-of-call on Sunday, January 22, 2023 was Isla Robinson Crusoe, Chile, the foundation for the book Robinson Crusoe. There are no shore excursions available for this port. There are about 700 inhabitants. Why, then, make this a port-of-call? That’s a good question with only one logical answer – it’s famous. Somewhere along the line, I didn’t have a requirement (or seize the opportunity) to read the book Robinson Crusoe, but it is based on a true story. Alexander Selkirk (1676 – 13 December 1721) was a Scottish sailor who was an unruly youth and joined buccaneering voyages to the South Pacific during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714). One such expedition was on Cinque Ports, captained by 21-year-old Lieutenant Thomas Stradling. When Stradling's ship, Cinque Ports, stopped to resupply at the uninhabited Juan Fernández ... read more

Wednesday 18th January - Saturday 21st January 2023 After a simple and comfortable night bus, even with a guy snoring softly away (no, it wasn’t Paul), we arrived pretty chirpy into Puerto Varas and were happy to realise our Hostal was just around the corner from where the bus dropped us off and that he would let us check straight in. A small basic room, it was a shame that the conversion (a row of rooms in a long shipping container) was not done very well, with water clearly sitting all underneath the flooring and big mould problems; still, it was only for two nights. Dumping our stuff, we headed out to wonder the small city on Lake Llanquihue, known for its origins of German settlers creating pretty wooden houses (some still standing boldly in various ... read more

This and all my blogs are available on my website with more photos https://heatherjasper.com/chile/wildlife-near-punta-arenas Say Hueque organized my penguin and whale watching tours. I went with them because of their environmental mission to go beyond sustainability. They were also super easy to work with! Highly recommended! The three most popular tours from Punta Arenas are also my favorites. This isn’t always the case. I often find the most popular places have become overly commercial, overly crowded or just plain boring. These tours are worth your time. The half day tour to see Magellanic penguins on Isla Magdalena, the full day tour to Tierra del Fuego and the full day whale watching tours truly are fantastic. I also recommend independently visiting Pali Aike National Park a... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » San Antonio January 20th 2023

A one-night sail transported us to San Antonio (Santiago), Chile for our Friday, January 20, 2023 day in port. I had signed up for the “Easy San Antonio & Villages by the Sea” Optional Excursion which began on board at the World Stage at 0830. Given that I usually have my coffee delivered at 0700 and set out for breakfast at the Lido Café about 0800, an 0830 meeting time wouldn’t allow much time for breakfast, so I opted to have room service deliver a full breakfast, as I had done once before under the same circumstances. Over the decades, Holland America has perfected the art of moving people quickly and efficiently. Upon arrival at the World Stage, each participant is given a colored sticker with a number to affix to his/her shirt. My sticker was ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine January 19th 2023

I just spent AUD$30 to do a load of washing. It was money well spent. I will explain later. This story begins at the very pointy southern tip of South America, in Ushuaia. When we got off the cruise ship we were so glad to just walk away and forget about all of the instructions that had been given to disembarking passengers the day before. When you have to get off ... which bus number you will have to get on ... What plane you will need to catch (and no doubt wait an unreasonable amount of time for at the boarding gate). We didn't enjoy feeling like sheep being herded around on the first day of the tour and much prefer independent travel whenever it is possible. We took the opportunity to see the southernmost ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena January 19th 2023

We departed General San Martin (Pisco), Peru in the afternoon of Monday, January 16, 2023 but didn’t arrive at our next port, Coquimbo (La Serena), Chile, until the morning of Thursday, January 19, 2023. That’s three nights and two days of sailing the ocean blue; however, there were some interesting things to occupy our time at sea. I don’t know how strictly ships’ routes over the vast expanse of the oceans are regulated (probably less than aircraft and that’s, probably, a good thing), but the captain announced just as we had left the pier that he had obtained permission for us to pass near a prehistoric rock art formation, or geoglyph, known as the Paracas Candelabra, or the Candelabra of the Andes. I’m not a prehistoric art enthusiast but do find them interesting and worth a ... read more

Saturday 14th January - Tuesday 17th January 2023 Checking into our little apartment in Santiago, we wondered why we hadn’t used apartments before now. Spacious with a kitchen, including a kettle and a fridge, meant we could make tea with milk whenever we felt like it! More still, the owner of this flat was really friendly and provided the tea and had a logged in Netflix account on the Tv ready for us to use. Amazing. Maybe a little too amazing, as, after a quick bite to eat at the near by subway, feeling tired, we decided to settle back into the flat for a TV binge before bed. Fully refreshed the next day though, we headed out early to explore the big capital city of Chile and enjoyed the wide pavements with tall trees, crossings ... read more

Monday 9th January - Saturday 14th January 2023 A small patch of oasis, with trees, birds and a river (albeit dried up!) San Pedro de Atacama is a little town in the middle of this hot, dry and dusty desert. It’s also a key lifeline for the many tourists travelling between Chile and Bolivia, as we did, with many hostals, bars and restaurants. Instantly feeling the higher level of wealth here (actual roads!) we enjoyed the feeling of cleanliness and the familiarity of a more western style bakery and coffee shop, but we also paid for it! Yep, as expected, Chile’s prices are definitely closer to home; yet, signal and the WiFi was really bad! I guess it is a desert after all. With a couple nights here, we enjoyed wondering around the town, sitting in ... read more

OAT tours always have a cultural immersive experience as part of the tour. Today we visited and had a home hosted lunch with an indigenous Kichwa family and spoke to 2 teachers and met students at 2 different schools along the Napo River. I do love this part of the trip, getting to see how people live their day to day lives. We got around by motorized canoe and walking through the forest to get to the community. One thing that was confirmed for me: Teachers are wonderful giving caring people no matter the language or culture they're teaching. One teacher, Carlos, we met had just 9 students in a one room schoolhouse on the side of the river. The families of these students have no money or way to get their kids to other larger ... read more
