Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto Pinochet, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

Tues, Oct 20 We got up pretty early, so we had breakfast and jetted to the bus station. I brought my 1 and 1/2 liter of water, figuring that it would be enough. We had about an hour till the bus came, so in the meantime we tried hitch-hiking. It didn't really work, but oh well! Half hour bus ride - we get to Toconao, and it is just deserted. Only a few people were outside, but it was just like a ghost town with nothing open. We went to where there were walls and irrigation canals built by the Incans. [View Full Entry]

The bus journey from Bariloche in Argentina to Pucon in Chile has to be one of the most beautiful trips in the world. For 2 hours wecruised around mountain roads going through lush forests, passing crystal clear blue lakes, past sheer granite mountains and finally through the snow covered mountain pass across the border. The small towns that lay on the Argentinian side of the border were just idyllic. They were all based around the amazing lakes, almost entirely made of log cabins in the forests and large birds of prey circled overhead. They were stunning. I cant quite say the [View Full Entry]

Day 3 I got up at 7:15 to shower. At 8 I went to get breakfast in the main building of the hotel. They had a really good breakfast. I had a banana, yogurt, toast w/butter, ham, and cheese, and some omelet. There was also juice, tea, cereal and lot of types of bread, yogurt and fruit. Everyone was really happy with the hotel breakfast. A lot of people made ham sandwiches to eat later. The bus picked us up for the archeological tour at 8:30. Our schedule said 8 am but I think they moved it back since we were [View Full Entry]

Hey guys! I´ve been spending more time in Santiago lately and figured I would post some pictures of random stuff that I´ve been doing around here. I´ve been getting cultured, and yes, I feel very worldly. Went to some cool photo exhibits, the best jazz show of my life, nights out on the town, etc. It´s been fun. Come visit me :) [View Full Entry]

Chile: Santiago We arrive in Santiago Chile, after a 13 hour flight from Auckland, and as it’s been an overnight flight it doesn’t feel too bad although the jet lag kicks in later. We fly with LAN Chile & find the service & entertainment a bit poor given the length of the flight. The airport is pretty impressive and seems to be quite modern. We then catch an airport cab (standard fare 5,400 Pesos each) to get us into the centre of the city where our hostel is. Our first impression from the airport is that Santiago is like a mix [View Full Entry]

As the region of Southern Patagonia is so vast and spectacular and divided by the Andes with Chile to the left and Argentina to the right, we felt it best to combine the blog for the area to reflect it’s true character rather than stick with the country by country format we have adhered to before now. Hopefully this will help some travellers who may chance upon this diary as accurate information about travelling in this part of the world is really difficult to come by - which is surprising given the huge number of people that travel here each [View Full Entry]

We had to leave our hotel really early to make our flight to Calama. Our flight left at 7 a.m. so we needed to get to the airport early. We left the hotel around 5 a.m. I got up and made eggs for the myself and the girls in my room. Since we were leaving so early we had to miss the hotel breakfast. Since it was so early in morning there wasn´t any traffic so it didn´t take too long to get to the airport. We breezed through check in and security and soon were on our way to Calama. Going Backwards South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Futaleufu
Public transport in much of Patagonia is difficult but once off the beaten track it can become almost impossible. We tried to get from Esquel in Argentina to Chaiten in Chile and then by ferry to the island of Chiloe, it's doable but not practical - at least for us. It all started well, at Esquel we thought we were in luck, the bus to the border runs only on Monday and Friday, it was Friday - result :-) Crossing the border was simple and straightforward (it's not always like that between Argentina and Chile), only when we got to Futaleufu [View Full Entry]

I finally packed my bags and got to bed. I got up early to shower and eat breakfast. We had to be to the airport by 7:30 a.m. Jorge drove Jess A and I to the airport. I didn´t feel so bad about taking my big suitcase because I wasn´t the only one. My bag did weigh 19kg though, which is kind of heavy! I decided since I was bringing a big bag, I might as well take whatever I wanted to! I sat by Hayley and an aisle on the plane. We had an emergency exit seat again which was [View Full Entry]
