Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto Pinochet, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

ATM’s: Again Trouble Makers After crossing the border with Chili I took the bus to San Pedro de Atacama. It is a small town and very touristy. While I was sitting at a terras in front of the restaurant having a coffee I started talking with people who were sitting on the next table. They were very friendly people from Santiago and nice to have a chat with. To escape Santiago city life and to relax they decided to stay for a week in San Pedro. Suddenly there was a girl standing next to my table. She appeared from nowhere and [View Full Entry]

The Peru trip had me pretty worn out. Friday I went to bed at midnight... and slept until noon on Saturday. I got up but pretty much stayed in my pajamas the whole day. I ate lunch with my family, did homework and went for a run. I did homework and worked on my photobook the rest of the night. Sunday was pretty much the same story. I slept until ten and didn´t do anything too exciting. After lunch, Christina came over to use our internet and do homework. She stayed until around 8pm. I spent the rest of the night [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Osorno and walked to a hostel that we had found in the guidebook. We got all settled in before anyone asked how much it would cost. Some people were unhappy with the cost so we ended up leaving to find a different hostel. We checked into a different hostel. It was a bit cheaper and had a kitchen that we could use. We walked to the store to get food and drinks. We went back to the hostel, made our food and then went to sleep. We were pretty exhausted from traveling and most of us felt like [View Full Entry]

Well here we are in Punta Arenas, much has happened since our last blog. We have ridden our Moto’s to the end of the world to Fin del Mundo and some of us continued as far South East as you can go, to Ea. Moat, what a great ride that was. Mike V has had his operation to repair and pin his broken leg and will be driven down to met up with us by his surgeon. We are looking forward to him rejoining us. We all went to Gerardo’s Estancia and enjoyed a great lunch, prepared by his wife, Marisol [View Full Entry]

Hi, its Lilach this time - The Salar in Bolivia, which Omer told you all about, was our last stop in Bolivia. From there we have crossed the border to Chile. Our first stop in Chile was a small town called Putre, which is the entry point to Lauca national park. Our first steps in Chile were not very positive - first, there was no place to change money in the border point. It went on, with a big surprise we had regarding reaching Putre. When we bought a bus ticket in La Paz to Putre, no one told us, that [View Full Entry]

Tue, Oct 27 2 more days until our trip to the south! In class we talked about our weekends, as well as what we should to to prepare for our upcoming trip.
