We were having a good old chat, albeit somewhat one sided. While waiting at the bus terminal in Foz do Iguazu a local approached and started speaking in an animated fashion. Man could he talk, and clearly it was an important message he had to share except for one small problem, I didn't understand a word he was saying! Not to worry, he just kept talking away while my facial expression changed from a look of non comprehension to positively idiotic. Finally a woman chimed in to remind him I didn't speak Portugese, and at least I understood those words. That's right bro, no fala portugese! Yet I was in great spirits as I prepared to board the bus to Rio de Janeiro. In fact I nearly burst into song "Woh ooh woh oh when my ... read more

Ilha Grande is an island 2 hours far from Angra dos Reis, in Rio de Janeiro state. The 2 hours journey onboard of a “scuna” or catamaran is not the most pleasant ride, but the beauty of the landscape makes it an enjoyable experience. This was my 2nd trip to Ilha Grande, and this time I decided to stay in the lively Abraao village instead of the quiet Aracatiba. Ilha Grande is generally a quiet island with loads of pousadas (guest houses) in remote locations, and Abraao village concentrates the largest numbers of bars, and local shops on the island. For being a secluded place, only accessible by boat or helicopter, Ilha Grande is very well preserved and a quiet place to be. The best way to get around the island is to go on a ... read more

While George was living in Fortaleza, my brother and I invited ourselves to visit him.... It was our first time in Fortaleza and we just loved it. The weather was so hot not to mention the sea! The beaches are magnificent with clear sand. A shame that Fortaleza has became a sex tourism place with so many young girls "serving" the gringos...so sad!... read more

September 2002 Waking up with a mosquito net around your bed isn't the most ideal mornings for most of us, but then again it's better than the alternative, hundreds of mosquito bites all over your body. Unless of course you end up like one of the girls, Kelly. Mosquito nets may keep most of the little pests out, but what happens when a few get inside...all they have left to feast on is you, and Kelly ends up with over 100 bites on just one arm (I stopped counting after that). It's a miracle none of us got malaria considering the Brazilian authorities confiscated our pills thinking they were drugs. If you've never been to the Amazon you should go. Take a boat up the river for a week or so, see the local people, experience ... read more

Geo: -22.9035, -43.2096There you go...once again two choices of stories to tell, the (very) good and the ugly... Ok...let's go ahead with the (very) good...A Girl...? Yes, an alpha male always meets a girl no matter where he goes to. Girls are drawn to you if you are alpha, it as simple as that...It always start like this...There was this girl... Ok, in fact...there was this girl...once again...She was sitting with her boyfriend in a Cafe at Copacabana...I don't really know why it happened but as soon as I entered this Cafe, our eyes crossed and the staring simply didn't stop. Imagine she was talking to her boyfriend why still keep looking at me. She was sitting on a table quite a bit away and her boyfriend was clearly seeing that her eyes are "travelling" to ... read more

We have finally arrived at our first stop on our round-the-world trip: sunny Rio de Janeiro! After a 14 hour plane journey, we arrived in 40 degrees temperatures. We dumped our stuff in the nice air-conditioned hotel and went straight to Ipanema Beach. At night it stays really hot and humid too at about 30 degrees C. Rio is an absolutely HUGE city, with a marked difference between rich and poor. We are staying in a “nice” area, but in the outer barrios there is a lot of poverty. We have spent most of our time sunbathing on Ipanema or Copacabana Beach, and doing the main tourist things - Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado (Christ Statue). We went out with some Aussie guys one night who introduced us to the local drink speciality - the “capprioca”. ... read more

I am writing this account nearly 10 years on from when I visited Brazil, seems a long time ago but it is still strong in my memory so I will blog it before I forget. At his time I was serving as a deck officer on the MS Isomeria for Shell Oil international, it was my first trip on a ship and it is what I consider by turning from a boy into a man. We sailed from Gibraltar to Brazil and subsequently crossed the equator for the first time and in the time honored tradition on sailors worldwide I had to endure the ceremony of crossing the line , which is an initiation rite for all UK sailors, which commemorates a sailor's first crossing of the equator. Originally the tradition was created as a test ... read more
