Ok, everything I ever said about being a jungle girl - FORGET IT!!! I realised yesterday when I ha d a shower that I had gotten a tic!!! So then I didnt feel very brave anymore. I had no idea in what to do about it, so the whole hotel got involved in my problem. Finally a very nice lady, with whom I was sharing room, took me to the hospital since you better be careful about Amazonian things. When I finally got to see the doctor, doctor Carlos, he only laughed about it and took it away. Hehe. Apparently it was an ordinary tic and nothing to worry about. But you better be safe than sorry! Been in the jungle. There were:- * armadillos - quite cute * spiders - big and very scary, especially above my hammock * dolphins - pink and grey * piranhas -I caught one and it tasted very good which for someone who doesn't like fish is interesting * crocodiles - the guide caught one but he wouldn't let us eat it * brazil nuts - they really do come from Brazil * quinine trees - very handy for the G & T * lots of birds - macaus, ospreys, cormorants, humming birds, toucans, etc * lots more plants and stuff I can't even start to name Went to see a local village, tiny, all subsistence farming, pineapples and mangoes in the back garden. From São Luis a thirteen hour bus took us to Belem. It really does have the feel of the oldest Amazon port. We had a cool time in Belem, we visited the beautiful botanical gardens where they have a large amount of animals - some live in cages (which we didnt like) , most didnt (which is much better) . It was also where we saw the peixe-boi (Amazonian manatee) a weird river animal (and very rarely seen). We also managed to see a 3 toed sloth - having never seen one before it was a treat - they really do move in slow motion .. Belem also recently converted its docks into a really snazzy waterside place , with loads of restaurants and cafes , live music and a generally good atmosphere. All in all ... read more
