Ouro Preto is the prettiest town I’ve seen so far in South America. It really is beautiful. It was built towards the end of the 17th century to serve as the capital of Minas Gerais state, doing so until Belo Horizonte was constructed. As it declined in importance, it has preserved its small town charm and its baroque architecture - it feels a bit like stepping back in time. Ouro Preto means Black Gold in English. Due to the rich mining heritage of the area, a lot of the towns have mining-related names - Ouro Branco (White Gold), Bauxita (Bauxite, or Aluminium Ore) and Diamantina to name but a few. Even though the town is quite small, it is extremely touristy (orientated more so towards Brazilians than international visitors), with so many hotels, pousadas (B&Bs), souvenir ... read more

First impressions of Belo Horizonte were very good. The bus trip from Brasília to Brazil’s third largest city was another efficient journey, arriving in Belo Horizonte in the early hours. The hostel I had booked online was in one of the nicer areas south of the city centre. The person who runs it was incredibly friendly, letting me in at a very early hour and then giving me lots of advice on what to see in the city. All in Portuguese, and I understood everything he said, albeit I needed him to repeat the odd sentence. But I’m definitely more comfortable with the language now, even if half of the words I say are Spanish and not Portuguese. The important thing is that I can normally convey a message and understand the person I’m speaking to. ... read more

Olá pessoal, Sejam bem Vindos ao meu novo Blog. Abraços a todos e até ... read more

Ouro Preto.

Saturday Well, Friday night I was visited by the ghost of Montezuma. I can only think of one reason, the salad that I ate in Ouro Preto. I was already not feeling great at dinner and maybe that is another reason why I did not spend enough time checking the dinner bill. This is the only day on our trip that I did not take a single photo. I took many on Sunday so I have decided to do a double day blog. Since I was not feeling well we waited until late morning before leaving the hotel. We walked over to the mall Patio Savassi to do some final shopping. Jackie found some nice earrings for the daughters and herself. Later, we took a taxi to Maria’s for lunch. There we met Maria, Gilberto, Ester ... read more

Friday We had planned pretty much the same today as we did on Thursday. But as you would have read, we did nothing on Thursday. So, when we woke today we decided to venture out of town. It was time for me to drive again in Brazil. Up to now we were taxied around or with Maria. So, we headed out to find a rental car agency, which we did by 9:30am. This became another test of my Portuguese but it worked. We rented the car for a day. Then we drove on the 'road to Rio' for about 60 miles south, then east for another 25 or so. We arrived in Ouro Preto ("Black Gold") before noon and toured the area around the square. As usual, once you park your car you are approached by ... read more

Thursday Nothing much on this day. We slept late and then went to the tennis club. There was no one around. The men's spa opened at 3:30pm so we just took in the sun, read and waited. I chose a different masseuse. I was glad that I did since the first one just about killed me. After Minas we returned to the hotel for a little rest and then met Maria and Gilberto at 68 La Pizzeria. This is a hot spot for the chic and we had to add it to our list. Maria ran into many of her friends from her work. That's it. As I said above...nothing much on this day. Stay tuned for tomorrow, however, it was loaded.... read more
