From 24/7 Wall Street: The continent closest to Antarctica is South America, particularly at its southern tip which includes parts of Argentina and Chile. These areas, southwest of the Falkland Islands, have little population. Argentina and Chile have vied to be home to the southernmost city in the world. Recently, Chile took the lead as it named Puerto Williams as a city. Previously, Ushuaia in Argentina held the spot as the southernmost city on Earth. Chile did not exactly cheat, but Puerto Williams was not called a city before May 2019. Puerto Williams started as a town in 1953 and became a base for the Chilean Navy. Over time, it has become a tourist destination, and home to scientific communities because of its proximity to Antarctica. For the most part, Puerto Williams posts ... read more

Ushuaia - The site was first settled by Wasti H. Stirling, an English missionary, in 1870. In 1884 an Argentine naval base was established, and in 1893, after the archipelago was partitioned between Argentina & Chile Ushuaia was declared a city. Ushuaia has the distinction of being the southernmost city in the world. Convicts were transferred from Isla de los Estados to Ushuaia in 1906 to build this national prison, finished in 1920. The depressing cells, designed for 380 inmates, held up to 800 before the prison closed in 1947. Famous prisoners include author Ricardo Rojas and anarchist Simón Radowitzky. The anarchist Simon Radowitzky spent 21 years in the prison, many of those years in solitary confinement. He was involved in an escape attempt wearing a prison guards uniform with the help of a well known ... read more

Ushuaia - The most southerly city in the world. It is 28 degrees centigrade in the U.K. so Ushuaia was a great choice to take a tour to see the End of The World Train. Barbara was standing in quite deep snow with the stunning backdrop of the Andes & Darwin mountains lose to the Chile border. It was 2 degrees centigrade With her husband as chauffeur we travelled the short distance to the End of the World Railway Station but not before stopping to take in the stunning views of the valley and beyond. In the late 19th century, Ushuaia developed as a penal colony, with the first prisoners arriving in 1884. In 1902, work began on a proper set of buildings for the prison by inmates, and a railway on wooden rails was constructed ... read more

1st April - Ushuaia, The end of the World #heygo http://www.heygo.com Ushuaia is the capital and port of Tierra del Fuego province ,Argentina on the Beagle Chanel. The site was first settled by Wasti H. Stirling, an English missionary, in 1870. In 1884 an Argentine naval base was established, and in 1893, after the archipelago was partitioned between Argentina and Chile. Ushuaia has the distinction of being the southernmost city in the world. There is little agriculture on the island, but oil & gas reserves have been developed. Many textile and electronic firms have been established at Río Grande. Fishing activity centres on spider crabs and mussels and other mollusks, which are canned and exported. The channel was named after the ship HMS Beagle during its first survey of the coasts of the southern part of ... read more

I wrote this back in 2010. Perhaps it is time to re-visit the ABCs?? Some of you may not have been on my email list back then. Gerry A is for Autobahn, a truly exciting and frightful experience the first time on the German superhighways. A could also be for Amsterdam, the wildest city in the world, where anything and anybody can be bought and sold. Of course, Amazonia could outshine anyplace on earth for its riches of forest, animals, plant life, and pure adventure. Don't forget the lovely and peaceful Algarve, on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, a wonderland of golf, good food, wine, and nice people. I almost forgot the magnificent ruins o... read more

So here I am with KP again. One might think that to be a liability but in all charity I gain from his presence. So where have we been and what have we done? Lots. In Buenos Aries we did the usual. (We ate big chunks of steak and drank copious amounts of malbec.) Evenings at jazz clubs and milongas and daily wanderings.(My leg hurts) Then to Mendoza where the nonsense began. Just imagine sitting on the back of a horse for three days among thorny dastardly rose shrubs having your legs shredded just for fun. The terrain in the foothills of the Andes was rugged, the horses stubborn but sure footed. We encountered magnificent views up into the peaks and down across the desert plain. I felt alive and were it not for having to ... read more

On y compte ... read more
