Just some pictures of Tierra del Fuego I arrived in Ushuaia a couple of hours ago, and are now booked in to the hostel. It was a great view on the flight down here and I got a bit eager with the camera. So I just wanted to show you some pictures of the area. I gonna spend the weekend in the city of Ushuaia and probably do some trekking in the park next week. And as you can see on the pictures; it´s a nice part of Argentina/Chile. More updates will follow later... read more

As part of the Province of Tierra del Fuego the Argentine presence in the section began during the first decade of the 19th century; though some even affirm that it took place by the end of the previous century. However, navigators from other countries claimed the discovery of Antarctica for themselves. By the end of the 19th century the aid lent by Argentina to foreign expeditions, in particular that of Nordenskjöld, Gerlache and Charcot, was properly appreciated. This included the assignment of Argentine place names to Antarctic geographic features, such as the Argentine Islands, Uruguay Islands, General Roca, Quintana, and others. In 1904 the permanent occupation began with the opening of Orcadas Base on Laurie Island. Argentina WAS THE ONLY NATION to have an Antarctic base for 40 years until the British built a base ... read more

NOW, with MORE PHOTOS!!! We had a few days to wait for our bus north, so we decided to head out into the small 'End of the World' National Park. We covered almost all of the trails in our 2 short days. They were nice along the coast and some small lakes and bogs. There are several similarities to Alaska and it was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Ushuaia for 2 days. The backpacking consisted of a few trails and road side hiking, the park was quite busy and even had a pretty pathetic narrow guage railroad train that ran a few miles. Many cruise ships call on Ushuaia and they use the train as a 'unique' way to get some visitors to the park, except it is really starts ... read more

Sadly we had to say goodbye to Torres del Paine and continue our journey south. After a brief stop in a drizzly Puerto Natales we headed on down the coast and had a wonderful visit to the Otway Sound Penguin Colony. The Magellanic Penguins return annually to this spot between October and March to lay eggs and raise their young. Initially we watched from quite a distance, but at one point, an inquisitive penguin popped his head out of a burrow and walked right out in front of me. I was so busy looking at the others further away that I nearly tripped over him! I had a real magical moment as I crouched down to watch him and he almost came and kissed my camera. What a cutie. I could happily have taken him home. ... read more

Well, we have been having some trouble exiting what we are now referring to as the "cursed south", it appears everyone else down here had the foresight to plan ahead, and manage a way back north. Add to that, its the end of all things pleasant for the area (each morning the snow on the mountains gets closer to town) and the mass exodus has thwarted our efforts to depart. We have been reduced to a 5:30AM day bus, and even then we had to wait two days to get tickets for it. In the meantime we have been keeping busy seeing some more sights, hanging out with the local animals. Yesterday we took a boat just off the coast of Ushuaia southeast into the "bahia de Ushuaia" past the Isles Bridges and further east to ... read more

my first argentine driving experience came in tierra del fuego, when me and a few mates from the hostel, rob from australia, anouk from holland and gina from LA, rented a car and went touring around this amazing place. our car was VW golf hatch with the touchiest brakes and hardest suspension..necessary to avoid accidents because they drive with absolutely no regard for any traffic rules. needless to say driving as fast as the car goes on small roads where lanes are just a suggestion is an experience in itself. once we got out of town, the views were amazing, driving along mountain roads, through the mist and the lakes. after a while, the landscape changed, the road ceased to be paved and we found ourselves among old fashioned farms and grasslands with packs of llamas. ... read more

Ushuaia seems to be a place almost impossible to leave...after my attempts to find a flight or bus out, i decided to get on a last minute cruise from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas. It was the second best thing at the time to actually going to Antarctica. Man was I shocked when i was gettin on the boat...i had a group of 70 year old grannies walking behind me... i started thinking- what the hell am i doing gettin on this granny cruise...it turns out that i was the second youngest on the boat...the youngest guy was 25...and he was there with his older brother...i thought that the trip was gonna suck, but mazingly things turned out really fun... Was put on a table for breakfast, lunch and dinner with these 6 spaniards who did not ... read more
