Spent just one day in Sao Paulo to get my flight down to Argentina. Not a very interesting city but it is incredible how massive it is- The metro gives you a rough idea of the scale (Se, the main station is about four times the size of kings cross!) and I went to the top of edificio italio in the centre. When you get up to the 41st story there is a viewing terrace and there are tower blocks and concrete in every direction as far as the eye can see. El Calafate was a really nice change from the big cities. Went to see the perito moreno glacier which is really amazing- the pictures dont do it justice at all! Big chunks of ice fall off every 20 mins or so and they make ... read more

Since the very first time I saw pictures of patagonia I´ve been dreaming about going there ever since. The complete remoteness, incredible array of wildlife and breathtaking scenery completely lure you in. After having such a good time in BA we thought it might be a bit of an anti climax. But when you´re standing on a boat in front of a 60 metre high glacier, watching flamingos on the lake, cycling through the countryside, hiking up to see one of the top 10 views in the world according to the "national geographic", you know you´ve made the right decision to come here. Instead of enduring 3 days on a bus we got a flight down to el calafate and stayed at America der sul hostel. The town itself is really small and quaint, but it ... read more

The five hour bus journey from Puerto Natales to El Calafate was surprisingly bearable despite none of us getting any meaningful sleep last night. After dinner and beers last night the 4 of us bundled ourselves into the back of an affable local's car and were escorted to the local 80's disco, wonderful! We had already enjoyed a fair amount of the local brew in a fabulous bar but it just seemed like the right thing to do at the time. After paying the entry fee of $5US each we made our way into what looked like a church hall. The bourbon and cokes were poured into the plastic coke cups with ecclesiastical enthusiasm. At this stage we didn{t even mind wading our way into the gents facility such were our high spirits. At 5am the ... read more

Hola chicos! I must first apologise to everyone that this blog has not been updated in quite some time. I could say that the rush and stress of travel has been the reason for the gap but that would just be very dishonest as the real reason is that i am just a chronic procrastinator... Soooooooo what have I been up to the last couple of weeks? Week 3 We spent the last few days of the 3rd week of the trip finishing our spanish course at the language school in Bariloche. To celebrate the end, we went for a night out with the other students including the english lads. We decided to try our luck out with the local chicas. We generated plenty of interest, especially a guy called Johnny, who became a self-proclaimed sex ... read more

Mali sme stastie, asi aj kvoli slnku, a videli sme odpadavat naozaj ... read more

We had read that one of the “must do” things in this part of the world was to see the glacier Perito Moreno. So we headed off early in the morning. There’s three activities that you can do in regards to see the glacier, a boat trip, a walk around the viewing platform and glacier trekking. The glacier trekking, while it sounded fantastic, was too expensive so we stuck to the boat trip and the viewing platform, and had a thoroughly enjoyable time, though somewhat cold. Again, besides packing one lot of light thermals we didn’t have clothing that was appropriate for cold weather. Oh well, no ones perfect. Back to the glacier, if you are in this part of the world I highly recommend going to see it. It measures 30km long, 5km wide and ... read more

When we arrived in El Calafate, it was windy and rainy the entire day. Which was fine considering we scheduled one day to get things organized before we head out for 2 days of intense all-day hikes. But having to do 2 days of 12 hour long hikes in the rain, snow and wind would have taken all of the enjoyment out of this part of the trip. But once again we got lucky and we woke up the next morning and the clouds and rain had cleared. When we got into Parque Nacional los Glaciers there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, which was awesome because the surrounding mountains and cliffs really added to the whole experince. We first stopped at the observation decks that look out onto the face glacier to get a panoramic ... read more

Perito Moreno Glacier… So we took our very sore and tired bodies to a 7.30am bus from Puerto Natales back to El Calafate to try for the final time to see the amazing Perito Moreno Glacier. We checked into a hostel we found in our guidebook and it turned out to be an interesting experience. The hostel was basically this lovely old grandma’s house but it was in a state of total disrepair….the kitchen had cupboard doors falling off and 2 plates and only 1 knife. But the lady running it was so sweet and was very patient trying to communicate with us in Spanish….and while we got there in the end, we were doing a lot of smiling and nodding. We had already tried to see the glacier twice our first time in El Calafate ... read more

If you have read, or just skimmed through our last entry, "Gone with the Wind at Torres del Paine", you might think we would have had enough of the great outdoors, let alone journey out of our way just to look at a big piece of ice. However, we had already written Perito Moreno Glacier into our calendar book, and Eva still had much enthusiasm for going back out and looking at that particular piece of ice. So what could we do? We arrived in the town of El Calafate, Argentina via bus from Puerto Natales, Chile on Saturday, August 13th, around 3 pm. We checked into our hostel, Los Glaciers Hostel II, and hit the downtown for food. El Calafate proved to be a fun, medium-sized toursity town, with many restaurants, craft shops, chocolate & ... read more
