Hail from the Hippie Haven of El Bolson! We left Bariloche Tuesday afternoon, finally en bici. The days pass slowly in the way you feel when watching a slide show of warmly lit photos or laying in a field looking at rorscharch cumulous clouds. Going south on Route 40 is like taking a trip through time. All the mileposts are numbered in descending fashion towards Ushuaia, El Fin del Mundo. Annie remembers dates like the initiation of the Ford assembly line and for some reason I think of flu epidemics and wars. We began our trip in the future, around the time when Mick Jagger will finally realize it’s over, and are now are in an industrious, naïve time before the world knew there could be war large enough to have its namesake. The Lake District ... read more

This point marks 3 hours on the computers here in El Calafate, and I´m still writing about what I did a week ago! Here is the end of my trip in El Bolson! I woke up and took a look at the map, deciding to head to Refugio Hielo Azul. I heard from many people that it was a very difficult hike and fairly long, but possible to complete nevertheless. I woke up about 10:30 (This time seems to be my natural wake up time throughout my journey) and waited for my friends to wake up at about 11. I wanted to get on the road, but I wasn´t in too much of a hurry. My friends were taking their time and we were all enjoying mate and bread with honey. The key word to an ... read more

Today, I awoke right along with my internal clock at 10:30. I didn´t have many options for hiking today and had already decided I would hike up to the glacier in the morning, take a small break, and return to El Bolson. Since I hadn´t walked the same way into the mountains, I had no clue what it would be like to get down and how I would return to town...nor did I think about it until I was at the bottom, confused and tired. I did some very stupid things on this day. It was not horrible, but just made my day that much more difficult. When I planned to walk up to the glacier (2 hours straight up), I didn´t think about leaving anything at the refugio and just taking with me say...water and ... read more

During my research and my whole way to El Bolson, even at the tourist office, I planned to stay in hostels here. However, I don´t want to get ahead of myself. A New Yorker ended up sitting next to me on my bus from Bariloche to El Bolson (2 hours). We talked about everything possible and he let me take a look at his Andean trekking guide which is an essential tool. Good thing everyone else has one! His wife was seated in front of us. They met while he was studying abroad in the Czech republic. A little foresight...I ended up seeing this guy all over Patagonia as well! I arrived in El Bolson and went straight to the tourist information office just like everyone else. I asked about hostels and hiking trails. They gave ... read more

After our exhausting experience crossing the border into Argentina, we were content to hang out in the very relaxed town of El Bolson for a few days. It's a bit like Nimbin but the drugs aren't quite so visible, although I'm sure there were a few people walking around in a bubble.. We arrived at about midday and headed to the tourist information centre for some guidance on accommodation... there were a dizzying array of hostels and cabañas in such a touristy town and too many for us to walk around searching for somewhere good. We decided on a particular strip a few blocks north of town and headed there to check out some cabañas which looked OK. They turned out to be smelly and musty, and as we crossed the road back to town we ... read more

Howdy ya´ll Sorry its been so long...but last post I promised photos...and I havent been able to find a place that will let me upload photos....they must think im a pornstar or something of the like.... Speaking of which, I learnt a new important word...apparently an orgy is ä¨Kilombo¨ and no...its not something ive learnt from experience. So after Buenos Aires I made my way to Bariloche. 20 hours on the bus never went so fast. I had a chair that went back 180 degrees.....I listened to my ipod for 5 hours...watched a movie...and fell asleep...and woke up just as we were arriving in Bariloche. Let me just say that the south of argentina so far is absolutely amazing...and ill be very suprised if anything quite like it exists anywhere in the world. Ive taken a ... read more

Well what a journey it has been getting to Argentina. We had read that you can take a ferry across one of the lakes that takes you to nearly the border crossing and it is the route Che Guevera took from Argentina to Chile. So left lovely Pucon and took 2 buses to a place we were told we could get the bus to Puerto Fuy to get the Ferry. We got to a town called Conaripe where we were told to go and there is no bus to Puerto Fuy. With our limited Spanish a guy told us to jump on this bus and it was the right way. The bus dropped us off on the roadside in the middle of nowhere and pointed at this other road. By this time it was 3pm and ... read more

I got to El Bolson today. I am staying at "The Farm" an Israeli hostel located in a farm (duh) in a small village near El Bolson. It's a beautiful place, but it's full of Israelis. There is nothing much going on here. I will be here a few days, and then head to El Chalten on the 17th. ... read more

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a great and safe New Years! I have to say, ours was pretty hard to beat, but I´ll get into that later. Last time I wrote we were headed out on a 4 day hike up to the Hielo Azul and through a pass in the mountains that make the Chile border. I´m happy to say that we survived, but at times it was a little touchy! First of all, for anyone who buys the Lonley Planet Trekking in Patagonia book, know that it lies! I´m not in the best shape right now but I should be able to complete the "easy" trekk with little difficulty. . . . this was not the case! Day 1 of the trekk was great. It was waffle day, so of course we ... read more
