I took my time over breakfast and spent it listening to hilarious stories and jokes told by my friends in the hostel and added my own. When it was a bit cooler I walked around a central park where people were doing lots of exercise. In the evening at 11 (like most Argentinians) I went out with Will (22 year old from Washington in the US) to a restaurant. He drank the national drink which was very strong and ate parilla whilst I ordered a banana milkshake. We talked lots about life in the UK and the US and compared the two different politics of the countries. We also talked about our opinions on Chile and Argentina and compared the two lifestyles. A band passed by the restaurant, with about 30 members dressed up, dancing and ... read more

Mendoza is out in the desert, passes through the Andes and it is the Argentinian province closest to Santiago in Chile. It’s main business is oil extraction, it’s second biggest money maker is tourism and it’s third business is wine production. The city is pretty and pleasant with plenty of parks but in my opinion there’s not enough to see to warrant walking around in the dry heat when everything is closed between 2 and 6pm but it is a great hub for outdoor activities and is pretty great for tourists and one of the many holiday spots for portenos (those from Buenos Aires)... read more

I’m really happy in this hostel and this part of my trip has been relaxing and productive in comparison to my time in Cordoba where I felt a bit dissatisfied with what I’d managed to see and quite lonely. The hostel owner Javier has been really helpful and has booked tours for me. Also, I’ve made quite a few acquaintances in the hostel and on both tours. I met a forty year old guy from Hawaii who was staying in my dorm and shared his bottle of wine bought from a Bodega between me and another of the guys in the bar, a 22 year old guy Will from the US who had got super cheap flights and was just staying for a week, a guy called Damien from near Oxfordshire and a bunch of about ... read more

The food in all Argentinian cities that I’ve visited has been mainly based around Italian cuisine, beef, American food, wine, mate, coffee and lots of bread. Sweet food and fizzy drinks can be found everywhere here and people eat very sweet breakfasts. It doesn’t suit me at all but I enjoy eating it at the time and feel unhealthy afterwards. I eat a lot of Mcdonalds because the beef really is top quality here and it somehow suits the climate here.... read more

The Argentinians I’ve met so far all look European and have French or Italian names. Generally the Argentinian people I've met seem to be very expressive, they love to talk about everything and anything, are inquisitive and very curious about Europeans. It is rumoured that Argentinians favourite hobby is reading and it seems true. There are bookshops everywhere. Argentina makes Spain look like the dark ages as people here seem to me so forward thinking in comparison to Spain and seem to look more to the future than be held back by tradition. However, it is such a shame that the currency is not a good one at the moment because I feel like this nation holds a lot of potential, has a good mind set with what I would call modern values and a real ... read more

I’d bought an overnight cama (bed) bus from Cordoba to Mendoza and I got the best night’s sleep I’d had in 3 nights. It was well air conditioned, they had coffee machines on it and like all the other Argentinians on the bus I put my chair right back so it formed a bed, got my pyjamas on, closed the curtains and slept like a log. I woke up in Mendoza. 2 hours after arriving into the bus station I’d joined a tour to two vineyards and an olive oil factory with a bus full of mainly Argentinians on holiday from Buenos Aires. It was a bus ride with a good, merry vibe. Yes certainly a ride with a vibe. The first vineyard was a bigger, more industrial one which used both white and red grape, ... read more

The route through the Andes, from Santiago, Chile to Mendoza, Argentina, is renowned for often being closed due to snow. We were lucky and got across on our first try. Looking out the windows of our bus we could see why it could be a hazardous route. Chair lifts filled with keen skiers sailed past us as we twisted and turned through mountains. Any significant layer of snow would have clearly made this trip treacherous. Luckily the only sign of snow was atop the mountains, leaving the road clear and so on we went. It was our fourth land border crossing and by far the most efficient (and also coldest).First you visited the Chile desk to be stamped out, then one quick side step to the right and you are at the Argentina desk ready to ... read more

A new blog post! After a good night sleep we were up nice and early to go cycling around some of the local vineyards. And by nice and early I mean about 10. Following the advice of Maggie, the lovely Argentinean working at our hostel, the four of us headed to the bus stop. With us were Rosie and Lottie who we had befriended the night before. It may sound like a silly idea to be cycling whilst drinking wine however the roads were reasonably quite and it turns out we could all still remember our cycling proficiencies avidly. Now experts in a variety of different wines, especially Argentinean Malbecs, we headed back home to cook our own steak to make up for the disappointment of the meal eaten the night before. We did contemplate a ... read more

Days 73-75 The trip from Salta to Mendoza was an 18 hr 1260 km afternoon & overnight bus trip arriving around 9.45 am next day so we all decided to pay for an upgrade with better meals (not true) & lay down seats (true but not much benefit with a snorer behind.) The route was flat all the way mostly single lane highway with the bus limited to 90 kph so just kept rolling along like an interstate train. Light rain arrived early morning (we were told it never rains in Mendoza!) but stopped by the time we reached the depot. After dropping our bags & a quick freshen-up we were off for a city orientation walk, a long lunch and the afternoon spent investigating activities for the rest of our stay. Much of the city ... read more
