Jeez its been a long time since ive last written, I've really just been continuing to get adjusted and attempting to speak spanish with all the IFSA kids, which is much harder than I thought it would be! We have been going to the park most days after class and drinking Mate, which is this herbal tea that literally everyone in the country drinks all the time. You drink it out of this cup that is actually called mate and the herbs inside are called yerba. I'm not a huge fan unless it has sugar but its something i've got to get used to since people sit in the park for hours and drink it. We had an entire class dedicated to it with our spanish classes because its so important! And there are lots of ... read more

It's been a while... It's been a while since I wrote my last blog, but also since I had a holiday. Nearly a year. That's about to be rectified as I'm heading off during the winter holidays. However, I took advantage of one of Agentina's many bank holidays to go away for a long weekend. Given that Argentina created more bank holidays last year, so that this year there is at least one bank holiday a month, you would have thought that there would be plenty of opportunity to travel or escape. Don't get me wrong, it's extremely easy to get away for the weekend, but I'm more hesitant to do so. There are various reasons, finding someone to look after the cats is the main one, but work has a habit of getting in the ... read more

Ok, Argentina. You really do exist. And you really are fantastic. Matthew and I split like bananas a few-something days ago. And also, like bananas, it was a very sweet googbye. I´ve spent time on another bus (30 hours), in Cordoba, and now in Cosquin! The bus ride should have been 20 hours. However, due to a farmer´s strike, as we were exiting Nequen a large group of men threw old tires in front of the bus and ¨cut the road¨ for several hours. They were nice, though, and had plenty of apples to share with everyone. All the passengers hung out just outside of the bus, because most everyone smokes. I met a wonderful young lady named Sole who is a musician and studies Literature in Cordoba, which is known for its colleges. Along the ... read more

dingy streets, dodgy salami, late night tango. Tango classes are stalling somewhat, its difficult for the man at the start as you have to learn the moves and guide the lady but the rewards can be great... silk adorned mermaids await in dingy sultry ball rooms with the fans blowing above or outside on a leafy balcony where a smokey brunette might ask you - de donde sos? The seductive nature of the tango culture is what gives buenos aires appeal, apart from being cheap. Its time to move on though as the noisy polluted backstreets are starting to impose themselves on my mood. The country awaits, heading north +west through the pampas( flat plains) to Cordoba and skipping along to a ranch in a hippie forgotten town where ex-criminals and artists are sure to be in ... read more

We´ve spent the last two weeks in La Cumbre - Jamie has been doing his paragliding course, and while at first I was interested, as soon as I saw the big drop and thought about jumping off all by myself, I realised that maybe this was a special activity just for Jay and I would be much better suited for laying around the pool and taking nice walks in the countryside. And it turns out that La Cumbre has a lot to offer the non-paraglider. Behind the town, there is a lovely walk up to the statue of Christo the Redentor. You can sit up there and look out on the town below, and right out to the hills. Behind the statue, there is a walk to a small lake/reservoir. Jamie and I took a walk ... read more

A violent gust of wind catches my canopy and I struggle to keep it on the ground. Nervously I look over my shoulder at the drop below - it's a long way down. Will I even be able to reach the landing field 2km away with such a strong head wind? I try to relax and run through the launch in my mind. There's so much to remember! I have waited for 8 hours in the baking sun for this moment. The sun will be setting soon - this will be my one and only chance to fly today. I feel the wind on my back ease off slightly and look over at my instructor in expectation. He pauses for a moment and then nods, "Now Jamie!". A quick step back and a gentle pull on ... read more

What I'm about to tell you, you may not believe but it's 100% totally true. Today, Glynn and I literally threw ourselves off a cliff and what's more, we lived to tell the tale! The reason we came to Cordoba, other than to break the long journey to Buenos Aires, was to go paragliding. Yes, you heard me right - paragliding! Not the kind of sport you might expect someone who is afraid of heights to get excited about but when we heard that the paragliding in Cordoba is world class and affordable, we just couldn't resist. We booked via the hostel (we're very comfortable here now by the way!) and found ourselves up nice and early to catch the 8am minibus to nearby La Cumbre. Just over 2 hours and 12 Pesos later, we ... read more

I finally managed to drag myself away from Cordoba since all the late nights were seriously catching up on me - when I say late nights, they were really early mornings. Bright sunshine and about 22 degrees when you come out of a club in the morning is a bit of a shock to the system but I didn´t seem to have any problem staying awake during the night, despite having to dance to the musical extremes of either electronica or salsa with nothing more to my taste inbetween! It was the trying to get some sleep during the heat of the day that was the hardest thing! I arrived in La Cumbre on Saturday night and went paragliding on Sunday morning. Now I know what it feels like to be a condor and float on ... read more
