So, I'm finally off on a mini round-the-world trip! For some reason, Argentina and Chile have always appealed, so they are the places to which I'm dedicating the most time. I'll then carry on round to New Zealand with a couple of stop-overs in Sydney and Singapore on the way back. See you back in the UK in February!

Finally home after a wonderful three-and-a-half sunny months abroad. Strangely enough, I'm actually enjoying the freezing weather back over here but I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon! Funny to think that on Monday I was boiling on Bondi beach and on Wednesday morning I was back in England wrapped in as many layers as I could find! After leaving New Zealand, I spent four and a half days in Sydney - a very brief visit to Australia but at least it was a taster of the country. I arrived on Australia Day, so I had the chance to watch the fireworks at Darling Harbour with my cousin Vanessa (who I was travelling with for three weeks in Argentina and who lives in Sydney). I also met up with Jade and Danin, the two Australian ... read more

Back in Queenstown briefly before heading over to Christchurch for my flight tomorrow. Rachel and I have done some more stunning treks and the area around here and the fjords really warrants weeks of trekking! We really enjoyed doing part of the Routeburn trek and the night on Milford Sound was awesome (in the original sense of the word!). Stayed at a private hostel yesterday where the owner took us out on his yacht so we could go swimming in the lake. So, we've now swum at the most Northerly and Southerly points we've visited in New Zealand (Russell in the Bay of Islands and Manapouri in Fiordland). I've posted some pictures on my last entry too, if you fancy taking a look at those. Next stop - Sydney!... read more

It's been a while since the last blog because I've been so busy covering over two thousand kilometres of both North and South Islands of New Zealand and haven't had a chance to sit down at a computer for a proper internet session until now! I arrived on 6th January and met Rachel Borer at the airport the same morning. How we managed to coordinate my flight from Santiago and hers from London is a miracle and we have shown none of this organisational spirit during our journey since then! We hired a car and it's been a spontaneous whistle-stop tour, spending 10 days on the North Island before crossing over to the South. New Zealand really is a beautiful country and the three weeks I have don't do it justice. My main impression is that ... read more

Hope you all enjoyed the New Year celebrations wherever you were. We´d planned to celebrate in Valparaíso but when we arrived yesterday afternoon it was so hectic that we decided to retreat into the foothills of the Andes cordillera! There was no accommodation available in Valparaíso anyway, so people were camping, jam-packed like sardines, along the side of the motorway! Glad we gave it a miss because we´ve ended up in a village hotel with views of the peaks in the Cerro La Campana national park and guess what we were woken by on the first of January 2006? An earthquake!!! Only measured 3 on the Richter scale and, to a slumbering Jessie, felt like undulating massage pads in the mattress but it was enough to wake us! Apparently it´s quite unusual to be able to ... read more

Well, we´re back in Argentina (and loving the cheap prices again)! It´s beautifully sunny but we went on a trek in the Nahuel Huapi mountains near here a couple of days ago and had to walk across snow along parts of the path, so we have kind of had a white Christmas! The trek was at around 2200 metres and actually pretty tough but, although scary, the snowy bits were fun and the campsite location was stunning, yet again. We´re treating ourselves to a nice apartment with swimming pool for Christmas. It´s in Bariloche, which really is just like Switzerland. It´s a huge change from the ramshackle corrugated iron and wood huts on the other side of the Andes in Chile. It seems a lot more afflulent here and there´s a really marked difference in the ... read more

It´s been a long time since I´ve had access to a computer because Nick and I flew from Santiago straight down to Punta Arenas, so that we could visit the Torres del Paine national park. It really was so stunning that I kept saying "This is so beautiful" over and over again! It had everything - HUGE glaciers, turquoise lakes, and beautiful mountains, including the eponymous ´Torres´(towers). I´m afraid that I´ve hardly got any photos on my digi camera but at least you get a vague idea of it. You´ll have to wait to see the rest when they´re printed from Nick´s SLR. We camped in the park for 4 days, in forests and alongside the lakes and glaciars. It´s truly an unforgettable place. Enough of my spouting, just go there if you can! We´re now ... read more

Just arrived in Santiago de Chile this afternoon, and despite having heard that it´s not a very attractive city, my first impressions are good. From what I saw of it, the journey across the Andes from Mendoza to Santiago was absolutely stunning. Unforntunately slept through most of it, having only had 45 minutes sleep the night before because wanted to have a night out in Mendoza before leaving! Should be doing the same journey again with Nick in about 3 weeks though so I´ll take it in better that time. Spent 5 nights in Mendoza at another good hostel with a nice bunch of people. Was thoroughly lazy for most of the time, either chilling at the poolside in the hostel, listening to Tango music in the main square or wandering around the largest urban park ... read more

December 2nd 2005

Have just returned from a two-day tour to a couple of UNESCO National parks north of Mendoza. The hostel I´m staying at in San Juan organised it for me through a local tour company but since there aren´t very many tourists around here at the moment, there were only three of us on the trip. The other two were a lovely Belgian Flemish couple but the driver was quite unpleasant, which put a slight dampener on things but we tended to laugh at him rather than getting annoyed and still had a good time anyway. The first park is famous for being a mine of early dinosaur fossils and the students working there were excellent at explaining the whole process. We cycled around the second park today, which was such a nice relief after hours in ... read more

I finally managed to drag myself away from Cordoba since all the late nights were seriously catching up on me - when I say late nights, they were really early mornings. Bright sunshine and about 22 degrees when you come out of a club in the morning is a bit of a shock to the system but I didn´t seem to have any problem staying awake during the night, despite having to dance to the musical extremes of either electronica or salsa with nothing more to my taste inbetween! It was the trying to get some sleep during the heat of the day that was the hardest thing! I arrived in La Cumbre on Saturday night and went paragliding on Sunday morning. Now I know what it feels like to be a condor and float on ... read more

Have been in Cordoba for about a week now and it´s been great just to base myself in one place with a little exploration of the surrounding Sierras. Cordoba itself is a funky town with a young, stundenty vibe, since it has the oldest University in Argentina. The hostel I moved to is in the heart of the student district and I´ve got to know a really nice group of people, nearly all of whom are travelling on their own and, just like me, have ended up chilling out in Cordoba, not wanting to move on! I wouldn´t say it´s the most amazing landscape at all but after all the non-stop travelling I´d done for the first month, it´s been nice to stay in one place and get to know some people. My most interesting visit ... read more
