Sandanzas Hostal: The taxi ride from the airport was interesting - nice place, big, although some parts of the city look a bit run down. Buenos Aires is like Panama city, only way bigger!! We knocked at the front door, and met the people who run the place - they seemed very friendly, although they spoke mostly in Spanish. Dina did most of the talking, since my Spanish is a bit on the weak side (okay, pitiful might be a better description). We waited in the kitchen, while they got our room ready. There were other travellers eating and talking, and generally doing their own thing. We didn't really talk to anybody, although we did exchange some friendly nods. We were eventually shown to our own room, at about 11:30 am. Dina and I hit the ... read more

Hey all, We´ve made another stop on the way to "La Capital Federal". We´re in Sierra de la Ventana, a small town near some of the oldest mountains in South America. Depending on which source you believe, the mountains are either about 2 billion years (guidebook) or 260 million years (park). Someone´s grasp of the base ten number system seems to be questionable. Sierra de la Ventana is in the Pampas Region of Argentina. The town is named after a mountain,Cerro Ventana, that has a ¨window¨in it. The mountains were created through sedimentation and uplifting. What is now the Ventana used to be the opening of a cave. The rest of the cave fell away, leaving just the opening. Thus, with the window being so popular, we had to hike up to it. The hike was ... read more

April 21st: Calgary International Airport: I promised myself that we would get everything ready well ahead of time, and get a full night of rest before departing on our trip. Did that happen? I have been awake since 10:00 am Wednesday, and it's now 6:50 am Thursday (moan). Dina didn't do much better, and she and I are now sitting onboard the plane that will take us to Fort Worth Texas, after which we will then board our flight to Buenos Aires. As we begin to taxi down the runway, two thoughts come into my mind: first, it's going to be a beautiful day in Calgary, on the same day of our departure. Second, I wonder for how long I will be able to keep my eyes open. To combat my weariness, I pigged out on ... read more

Hello! After all our walking around Bariloche, we needed a break. We had a lazy day in town on Friday. Then we did a day trip to El Bolson on Saturday (the 16th) to visit the town and feria (market). El Bolson is the Berkeley of Argentina. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday their is an artisanal fair in town with close to 300 vendors. Hey, even hippies need an income. Ana felt right at home in the nuclear free zone. We went on a spending spree in the market. Ok, not a spree, this is us we are talking about. We bought a handspun and woven woolen scarf and earrings for Ana, a maté (gourd cup for maté preparatio), a bombilla (straw for maté drinking), hand-made wooden buttons, and snacks (empanadas and yummy waffles). All this ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tandil April 15th 2005

Last weekend we went to Tandil with half the group. Tandil is about 5 hours south of Buenos Aires by bus, but still in the province of Buenos Aires. It lies right in the middle of the "sierras"(hills). The province of Buenos Aires is completely flat except for Tandil which has many hills. Tandil is known for its moving rock that doesn't move anymore. The main attraction of Tandil was a rock that used to move when it was pushed. It was an enormous rock, but it fell in the early 1900s, so now people go to see the rock that used to move. Tandil is more of a place to go and relax and is where a lot of Argentines go for a quick outdoorsy vacation. It also seems like a lot of people in ... read more

After a wonderful week with Becca in Mendoza it was off to Buenos Aires. I decided to treat myself (not that I hadn't already been treating myself every day) to Andesmar's Primera Clase bus service to the capital. For 125 pesos (about 40 bucks) I would ride in style into the big city. Thats right, fully reclining leather seats, champagne, all the mendozan red wine you can drink, mediocre meals (certainly a step up from the airplane food they normally serve aboard Andesmar) and the company of fellow rich people. I was tired of riding with the riffraff you normally encounter on "normal" buslines, so it was nice to have civilized company for a change (i say this with a heavy dose of sarcasm). but it was nice. similar to first class on a plane, only ... read more

I finally settled on an apartment...see pictures. It is so difficult to find a place with short term leases, fully furnished, etc, etc, so I went with a friend of a friend who I knew wouldn't charge me a lot. My first time signing a lease in Spanish too, it took me a good 20 minutes to read and understand it all. It's a nice little one bedroom place with a terrace and full kitchen, in a great area with cool restaurants/bars/cafés only steps away. I've signed a lease for a month and then will try to share a larger place after that with some others to make it cheaper and more fun (I could also practice more Spanish this way). I do have a TV in my apt now, so this is also a great ... read more

Hey everyone Since we last updated this site a whole lot has happened so grab a cuppa and read on. You'll notice that we've managed to put more photos on too, so you can see for yourselves what we've been up to this past few weeks. Mendoza was an absolute blast! Loads of things to do in the day, loads of places to go at night, and full of the bright young things of Argentina due to its huge University population. We became the all action foursome over the course of this stage of our trip, which began with horse riding last Saturday. Having never tried horse riding before I for one was pretty pensive. We arrived at the ranch and met 4 other travellers who would be joining us on a "gentle trek through the ... read more
