Liam and Dina

Hi everybody :o)

My wife and I are doing a five week tour of South America - Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. Those who are interested are welcome to read about our adventures...

Personal Info: Dina and myself live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I was born there, and my wife is originally from El-Salvador. We are middle aged travellers, have no children, but we do own a cat and a dog that will be glad to see us when we come home...

U Turn - Alas, Rosario: Monday, and my cousin´s wedding was over...we said a final goodbye to those who still remained at the hotel, and prepared to leave town. I had my mind set on visiting Rosario, for one purpose only really - it was the birthplace of Che, the Argentine rebel who had aligned himself with Castro, and who´s face now graces countless walls and t-shirts. The legacy of Che is fairly enticing, if not a bit over idealized and romantic. Still, for one such as myself who believes in fighting for human and labour rights, even if only using peaceful means, it is hard not regard the percieved image of this modern day spartacus with interest, and even a bit of awe. However, after we had already bought the bus ticket, reality overcame my ... read more

An Irish Wedding: It may seem a bit strange for one to attend a family reunion of sorts in Argentina, with Irish relatives one has not seen for nearly a lifetime. However, I did indeed do so, and it turned out to a unique and exciting experience. My Irish cousin David, whom I had last seen nearly thirty years ago, married a very nice Argentine girl named Roxanne, and my wife and myself had the honor of attending their wedding. It was held near the place of their intended home, La Plata - a relatively small but vibrant city near Bueno Aires. Getting there turned out to be a bit of an adventure, due in part to our casual attitude towards public transport. Dina and I took the old train that runs out of Buenos Aires ... read more

April 27 - Iguazu Park, Argentina: In the morning, after recieving a typical breakfest of french bread baggets and jam, we proceeded to catch the bus to the Argentine side of the falls. The park was nice, although the weather was kind of crappy - unlike the day before, the sky was overcast and the air humid. However, we didn´t let it prevent us from taking advantage of the day. We signed up for a tour, which included a short truck ride through a patch of forest, and then a boat ride down the same river as Iguazu falls. The whole thing cost about 70 pesos, and while the truck ride was nothing special, the boat trip was kind of fun, as it took us right under some of the lesser falls. The jacket that I ... read more

Day 6 - Night Bus to Iguazu: Despite some initial apprehension about the impending length of our journey, the bus trip to the Puerto Iguazu wasn´t too hard. The time had passed reasonably quickly - the movies shown on the overhead televsion were better than what we had seen on the plane ride from Canada to Argentina. Dina was able to keep herself entertained by speaking with some of the other people on board, in Spanish, while I attempted unsuccessfully to get some sleep. There was a young fellow sitting directly to the right of us, whom Dina spoke to for a while. She later told me that he was from Paraguay - his job was buying/selling items in BA, and transporting items back to his town, near the falls, for resale. Our travel guide (rough ... read more

Plans: Our time at Sandanzas Hostal expired, and Dina and I planned to catch a late afternoon or evening Bus to Puerto Iguazu, so that we could visit the massive waterfalls that stretch between Argentina and Brazil. However, I still wanted to see the Recoleta cemetery, where Evita and other rich and famous Argentines have been laid to rest. Fortunately, the good folks at Sandanzas were kind enough to let us leave us our packs with them, while we explored yet another part of the capitola. I took my daypack, which contained bottled water, our digital camera, and a few snacks for eating on the run. We caught the No. 130 bus in San Telmo, and rode it past the docks and the anchored warship relic that we had visited the day before. We passed the ... read more

A Chilly Morning: I woke Sunday morning to find our room surprizingly cold. I faintly recalled hearing the sound of rain during the night, and then Dina getting out out of bed and closing the window shutters against the heavy plastic blinds used to block out both sunlight and mosquitos. In between the gaps of the blinds, I could see the sky was grey and overcast, and a chill wind streamed from the cracks where the two halves of the shutters met. We rose, dressed ourselves, and hurried downstairs, not wishing to miss another breakfast. Sandanzas serves a light breakfast, mostly croissants and freshly squeezed orange juice - however, free is free. There were a few people at the kitchen table, and I talked briefly to a young fellow from Germany, who had been away from ... read more

Wrong Name, Right Place: I seem to have made a little error - the hostal at which Dina and I are staying here in the San Telmo district of BA is called SANDANZAS, not Sandaraz or whatever the hell I called it in my first posts, which has since been corrected. Yes, it was sloppy of me, I know...but I wuz tired! Anyway, the place is nice, cept that there is only one computer which is shared by everybody (the staff have one of their own, but it's for their use only, I think). It took me quite a while to get on this thing tonight - there was some dude parked on the machine for hours! I had a shower, shaved my face, and then came back, and he was still using it. The last ... read more

Sandanzas Hostal: The taxi ride from the airport was interesting - nice place, big, although some parts of the city look a bit run down. Buenos Aires is like Panama city, only way bigger!! We knocked at the front door, and met the people who run the place - they seemed very friendly, although they spoke mostly in Spanish. Dina did most of the talking, since my Spanish is a bit on the weak side (okay, pitiful might be a better description). We waited in the kitchen, while they got our room ready. There were other travellers eating and talking, and generally doing their own thing. We didn't really talk to anybody, although we did exchange some friendly nods. We were eventually shown to our own room, at about 11:30 am. Dina and I hit the ... read more

April 21st: Calgary International Airport: I promised myself that we would get everything ready well ahead of time, and get a full night of rest before departing on our trip. Did that happen? I have been awake since 10:00 am Wednesday, and it's now 6:50 am Thursday (moan). Dina didn't do much better, and she and I are now sitting onboard the plane that will take us to Fort Worth Texas, after which we will then board our flight to Buenos Aires. As we begin to taxi down the runway, two thoughts come into my mind: first, it's going to be a beautiful day in Calgary, on the same day of our departure. Second, I wonder for how long I will be able to keep my eyes open. To combat my weariness, I pigged out on ... read more
