After a long flight from Houston, we arrived in Buenos Aires, surprisingly, ready to see the sights. Unfortunately, they were not ready for us to see them. Three museums attempted, and three museums closed. January, it seems, is a poor time to visit for tourists as all the locals are on holiday, closing many of the attractions. Our hostel in San Telmo, the Telmotango, was very nice. Clean and neat, we had a two story room with two single beds on the upper floor and a double on the lower floor for Sara and me. Cabinets were present in the room for locking up our 100lbs of gear, and we decided the staff was trustworthy. After finding that so much of the town was shut down, and feeling that our lungs were quickly clogging with ... read more

Food: The undeniable Italian influence makes pizzas, pastas, and gelato as prevelant as pigeons in Union Square Park. But I had to try the steak, as Argentine beef is why some people visit. We picked a chic Italian restaurant that gives complimentary champagne with the bread basket. Nicole´s pasta was good, but my steak was tough and fatty. Not to be dettered, I will be trying the beef from the parilla (grill) which can be served at local greasy spoons designed for this purpose. We did find out about an Arabic restaurant and the thought of falafel made our mouths water. (sandwich and soda, $1) Mainly we´ve had plenty of salads, a few pizzas, some pasta, and plenty of crossaints or whatever accompanies all the cups of coffee people drink here. There´s even a pastry ... read more

On Sundays, San Telmo, a neighborhood south of the city center that is known for its bohemian, artsy vibe, which usually equates to young people living just a hair above squatter level "by choice". The guys from our building are moving there....we finally found out their names..it was definitely turning into a Seinfeld episode where a group of people hang out and feel like they should know each other´s name by now, but don´t wanna ask so to avoid the awkward moments, you have to always wait till they´re looking at you before you address them....it´s funny, to do....and I was waiting until they addressed each other, but as luck would have it all they do is grunt or bark "yo" to the other person. Napolean Dynamite, I soon learn is named Ean. He´s cool ... read more

Recoleta Cemetary: We checked out one of the most interesting places in the whole city...morbidly enough, it is the city of the dead. The cemetary, (which looks like a small city with tombs extravagantly designed as small houses) is home to only those with famous last names, prestige, and a lotta cash. There is an Argentine saying that states 'one can live an extremely wealthy life and still not pay as much as it cost to be buried in Recoleta Cemetary'. We actually know two locals (Frederico and Giancarlo) whose families have plots there. Some of them house entire families, others only large enough for one or two coffins. We also saw a few smaller ones with only 2 coffins spaces, which are occupied, therefore about 10 boxes of other relatives are piled on on top ... read more

Palermo. Avenue Cordoba. Daniel Wasser Spanish School (DWS). Tango lessons. We walked all over the entire city. We walked to the point of collapse- up and down Ave. Sante Fe, in lieu of taking the subte (subway). We shopped- stores, stores, stores, from Recoleta and the city´s microcenter all the way back to Palermo. Nearer our apt. in Palermo, on the country-named streets (Guatemala, El Salvador) we found the best stores for us- fashionable boutiques selling the cutest summer clothes for rock bottom prices. It rained nearly every day, and when not raining it was sweltering. I liked San Telmo even more than Palermo, and Belgrano is nearly as livable. We walked from the antique market in San Telmo on Sunday after a long, long Saturday of walking in Uruguay (Colonia) and a windy, windy afternoon ... read more

Just after New Year I headed to Buenos Aires. With hardly anyone on the double level bus, I got the chance to ride up front with the bus drivers. There, drinking Mate with Sprite, listening to Reggaeton to stay awake, and to my disbelief, tossing all of the trash out the window to the beautiful countryside, they tried to convince me that bus drivers are expert road warriors. Even though they had not had a day off in 42 days, and slept less than four hours per night on a tiny bed under the bus, they could easily make out the light signals from other drivers on the road at night. Double flashing lights coming towards you means that there is an oncoming car in your lane; two left blinks from the vehicle in front of ... read more

Starting this morning in Montevideo, Uruguay, we walked around the city to find out that the city is alive and kicking. Locals go to work, cars are zooming all around us, and shops are open. We managed to purchase some souvenirs from Uruguay, including from a flea market at Plaza Constitution. Montevideo doesn´t have much to offer tourists, so we decided to leave the city earlier than scheduled by successfully changing the tickets to the one o´clock Buquebus. Things went smoothly except for a little incident on my Argentine visa (surprise, surprise), but it got sorted out after a few explanations in English. We got on the three hour ferry ride from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, which was a time for me to catch up with my journal entries. Ryan took a long nap on the ... read more

Gotta love the keyboard here in the Spanish speaking country, man. Everything is laid down for you, including the upside down keys (such as ¿ and ¡) and unusual letters ç and ñ. Good morning, Argentina! I couldn't get back asleep this morning, and got up around 6:30 in the morning, so I decided to walk around the neighborhood of the hostel. BsAs in the morning gives an intimate feeling of being a friendly city, with not so many cars and people around me. I managed to do some errands, checking out places (Palacio del Congreso, Obelisco, and Teatro Colón) and buying some postcards, before heading back to the hostel to clean up and "start" the day. After breakfast, we walked along the Av. de Mayo which ends up at the famous Casa Rosada, with the ... read more

¡Hola! Finally we arrived in Buenos Aires after a 9.5 hr pretty painful flight from Atlanta. The flight was overbooked, and for some odd reason, there were many kids on the flight. Kids could be cute and all, and they always spread around in the aircraft strategically that almost in every single rows and aisles, there was at least one kid. If one started to cry, it was loud, and of course the crying is contagious, therefore, almost throughout the whole flight, we heard different kid crying at different time. Not a good restful atmosphere, which oddly enough makes me really appreciate my parents and all parents in general for their sacrifices. Thanks mom and dad! We went through the immigration and custom with a breeze. Ezeiza International Airport is located about two hours bus ride ... read more

I arrive in Buenos Aires knackered and hungry, I leave really knackered. Mine time in BA was spent hanging out in the hostel, eating steak and partying. I stayed at the Milhouse hostel, this was the place for party hungry backpackers and no coincide was full of Brits, Irish and Aussies. I´ve been bumping into a fellow pair of backpackers all over Peru so it was great to see them again at the Milhouse. Now you may not believe this but I hadn´t really had a good drinking session since leaving. So hanging out with Jim, Rachel, Will and Alan was perfect, like minded individuals. For Xmas eve the hostel held a party then bused us to a club. The party didn´t get going until 10pm and the bus didn´t leave until 2am, a strange Xmas ... read more
