Arrived in Buenos Aires after a cold weather stint in Central Europe. It was mid January, so that means its summer in BsAs. Needless to say, big fans of the temperature, and soon afterwards EVERYTHING else in Argentina. After almost 2 months spent in & out of both airports and the ferry terminal in BsAs - as well as several friendly vists form Chi town crew & parents - we then departed, but have long since wished to return.... read more

I dont know what is wrong with me but I wake up with all these plans....then something happens between waking up and leaving the house and i realize...i am stuck like a fly on sticky fly tape. I can't leave!!! This morning I was going to go to the bank, check out the market across the street and uh....I dont know what else I was going to do...but it was something. But THEN Ed puts on some wonderful reggae, the type I like. (The stuff Abe used to catch Mariah and I listening to...slowly bopping around in our room at Milroy...and laugh at us for because we were listening to reggae....our rebuttle? "This is good...") So Ed puts on this music and my spirts lift and I am transported to somewhere else. Next the food comes ... read more

If you are Argentine, wealthy and dead, you are probably buried in the Recoleta Cemetary. The place has always fascinated me. In many ways, I think it is emblematic of the country and the city as a whole. On Friday I went to the cemetary to take pictures. The day was cloudy, and any shots with the sky as a background was turning out bad, so I decided to take pictures of crosses.... read more

Four days until Mariahs birthday. I am reminding myself that I need to buy a calling card as well as remember to call her. I am sitting in a cafe somewhere in San Telmo. The people sitting next to me I think are speaking Portueges. It sounds a little like French and I can reconize a couple of words. Yes it must be Portueges. I have been walking around San Telmo, wandering a little but never losing where Avenida Defensa is. (Ave. Defensa intersects with Brasil at my apartment.) The more I wander the more I feel like I am not in Buenos Aires, at least the BsAs I saw with Mom and Auntie San. There are no wide avenues lined with trees and its not the micro center filled with business men and women and ... read more

So, one week on and I´ve finally managed to prise Luke off the PC long enough to write myself. Think he´s missing the Blackberry more than he lets on. The fact that it´s recently been launched here and there are billboards all over the city may be adding to his sense of loss. I did relent and permit him buy a new gadget yesterday, but only because our travel radio broke. He still had to be steered away from camera shops though (I can´t face any more after Tokyo) So, we´re leaving Buenos Aires this afternoon to head south. No direct flights available to Ushaia, so off to Trewlew we go, near Peninsula Valdes and Puerto Lombo. A chance to see some wildlife, including the huge penguin colonies at Puerto Lombo, and also to visit the ... read more

Buenos Dias! Here we are, slap bang in the middle of Argentina. We survived the flights and the mayhem that is Buenos Aries International Airport. In reality, the flights weren´t that bad. I was expecting schnitzel and saurkraut all the way, but the Lufthansa kitchens have obviously diversified over the past few years. As for the airport, there´s huge irony in its international airport code of EZE. Take it from me, there is nothing "EZE" about it! We queued for over an hour in sweltering heat to get through customs, by which time our bags had walked off the travelator and were lying, abandoned, in the middle of the lobby. No matter and we grabbed a Radio Cab into town. Buenos Aries is a vast sprawling place. The European influences are apparent, as are the more ... read more

It's here....well just about.... 48 hours from now and we will be just touching down in Buenos Aires. I have a plethora of etickets and travel vouchers to organize before we go. After triple checking, everything is in place and confirmed.... I'm such a stickler for details... Packing is a nightmare; it will be scorching hot, freezing cold, wet, dry and everything in between. To make things more difficult, Aerolineas Argentinas has the strictest weight restrictions this side of Fat Fighters. I can see frequent visits to the local lavandería automática on the horizon. I can't say I'm looking forward to the flight. At 6'4'' I don't sit happily in economy; Business Class is much more civilized. Could be time for some creative manoeuvring...where's my walking stick and neck brace?? How often this 'Blog is updated ... read more

Well I arrived back in BA very late on Monday evening, to the sweltering heat of the city. After the wind blown steppes of Patagonia, the still air and humid heat is almost oppressive, making movement rather on the uncomfortable side. Yesterday was spent saying my good byes to the rest of the group and Graciella (scarey, now on my own in the big city) trying to sort out a bed for the night, (succesful), book a bus to get the ranch (a double decker sleeper bus - wish me luck with that one!), get a new SIM card so I can recieve calls without costing the earth (not sure if it's actually working yet, no-one has actually been able to call me yet!), putting digital photos onto CD to send home (took ages) and replying ... read more
