Day 1 An early morning start of 4am to catch the red eye to Sydney saw us tired, however landing in Sydney the excitement increased. Kym and I were appropriately dressed for a cruise. I donned a navy and white nautical inspired outfit right down to my shoes and nails and Kym wore his Captain Hellfire tshirt and 3 quorn pirate hat, which had comments all day about him being Captain Jack Sparrow and his got excited seeing a real pirate. An uber shared between the four of us and we were at Circular Quay. Dropping off our suitcases at the terminal we had a few hours to kill before boarding and walked to the Opera House and bought our first celebratory drinks overlooking our cruise ship and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The warm sun felt ... read more

Hello Everyone. Let’s start with the good news we’ve been waiting to receive. We finally got the message that our granddaughter (Tessa Brink) had successful surgery on her arm to insert a couple of long nails to align the two bones she broke in her right arm almost 2 weeks ago. The doctors have been waiting for the swelling to subside so they could set the bones properly and she is doing fine. In 2 more weeks she will need more work, but not to worry. She will stay overnight in the hospital, but Valerie will stay with her and they should both go home tomorrow. We are really relieved this is done and that all went well. Now for the bad news. Janet has relapsed into having more stomach distress and had a rough night ... read more

Hello from the Mediterranean Sea. We went through the Straights of Gibraltar in the middle of the night and all day we have been sailing through the Med. David actually got up at 2:00 this morning to see if there was anything visible in the moonlight. What he found was that the wind was howling and he barely opened the balcony door before closing it again and going back to bed. So we will hope to have a better viewing opportunity when we sail back out later in the cruise. We slept until the alarm went off at 7:30. That gave us enough time to get up and dressed before we went to have a nice breakfast in the dining room. Janet had bacon & eggs while David had the lumberjack breakfast (steak & eggs). That ... read more

After leaving Vigo we embarked on a 3-day voyage to Livorno Italy. The captain announced that we would be sailing along the Portuguese coast and passing by Lisbon during the night, but too far out to see anything. Then in the middle of the night we will pass through the Straits of Gibraltar, but only visible by the full moon tonight. That is the tour-guide summary of our passage today. We slept in this morning after a very tiring day yesterday. However after a good long night’s rest Janet was feeling better. Her ankles are still a bit tender after all the walking, but she is doing better. By sleeping late Janet missed the Knitters meeting, but we did have a good buffet breakfast about 10:30. For the first time since we got on the ship, ... read more

Hello from somewhere in the Bay of Biscay. Last night we sailed down the English Channel and headed south toward Spain. The captain had them hustle along last night so we could have a smoother ride during the day. It wasn’t anything we haven’t experienced before, but Janet had difficulty getting her sea-legs back and didn’t sleep very well. But throughout the day she started feeling better. We clearly can feel more motion on this ship than the QM2, but this is back to what is more customary on an ocean voyage. In a couple of days we will be in the Mediterranean Sea and it may be calmer there. Because it was harder to sleep last night, we slept in later in the morning than we had planned. This was when Janet was still feeling ... read more

Today we wrapped up Phase-2 of our vacation. We have concluded our visit to London and have started cruising again. But let’s take the day in order as it happened. We got up at 7:45 with most everything already packed in the suitcases. We went down for the usual breakfast and then said goodbye to the lady who has prepared the food and cleaned the room all week. There are 4 people who do almost all the work in this small hotel, so we have gotten to know her. The menu has been pretty much the same everyday, but it was better than some European breakfasts we have had, and the lady was always very friendly to us. We went back to the room and found an e-mail from Stephanie. She said they had tried to ... read more

Hello again from the Queen Mary 2. Our crossing is rapidly coming to an end so it is disappointing that we had to start packing in preparation to disembark tomorrow. As such it has been a fairly quiet (not attending a lot of the organized activities) day for us. We got up and headed off to the dining room for a final leisure breakfast. Tomorrow will be a hectic job of getting out of the cabin and hauling our last few belongings through the buffet. So today we took our time and had a 3 course breakfast. First came the fruit juice, pastries, and fruit course. Then we had the meat and eggs (Janet had bacon and fried eggs while David had an omelet and kippers). The 3rd course was French Toast for Janet and Waffles ... read more

Hello from the Queen Mary 2, somewhere still at sea. Today we start with some sad news about our granddaughter, Tessa Brink. We were told that yesterday she fell and broke her right arm – both bones. She currently only has a splint but after the swelling goes down a little, she is destined to having a cast. I thought we had left clear instructions for “nobody to get sick” while we were away, but we should have also said “don’t get broken” either. We hope she starts feeling better soon and she heals quickly. David did the same thing to his left arm when he was a kid and look how he turned out – well that’s not because of his arm. We got up before 8:00 today and went to the dining room for ... read more

Oceans and Seas September 13th 2018

Today was a pretty lazy day so this won’t be a very long report. We slept really late after our activities last night. David slept until 9:00 for the first time in his memory. He got up and dressed quietly and went out to get a glass of juice and a pastry. He took the laptop and finished composing yesterday’s blog. Then he returned to the cabin and went out on the balcony to read. Janet slept until about 10:30. After getting dressed and editing the blog, we went to the Chef’s Galley just before they closed the last of the Breakfast Buffet. This means that we actually missed a meal (lunch) today – horrors, how did we survive! We had tickets for the 1:30 planetarium show. With the clocks being moved forward again today, we ... read more

The way our bus approached the piers back on Sunday, and how the boarding process occurred, there was no good way to step back and take a picture of the whole ship – especially in the rain. David has cheated and has included a picture from the internet of the Queen Mary 2, just to show what our “ferry” looks like as we shuttle across to London. This morning we slept in for a while before going to the dining room for breakfast. We shared a table with some UK people who were on the return leg of their 14-day roundtrip. In their case, the journey is truly the vacation as opposed to being a mean of how to get to a destination. The other couple will be flying out from Southampton on a small plane ... read more
