Day 167: Saturday 13th December - Three-legged drinking games in Westport Leaving Nelson Lakes national park, the bus continues to Murchison. At the stop off I get a huge ice cream - trying this legendary Hokey Pokey ice cream which I'd be alerted to by the two Kiwi girls from Dunedin whilst in the Cook Islands. Apparently this ice cream only exists in New Zealand. Well to me it tastes just like Crunchie ice cream from back home with a honeycomb taste so its not unusual after all. Whilst in Murchison I also bump into Jo and Meghan, the two girls we met in Abel Tasman national park. This isn't the last time we meet either. After a short break we head west to Westport, our first stop on the west coast of the South Island. ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 5 10th November 2008 Stewart Island - Milford Sound - Wanaka - Franz Josef Glacier - Lake Matheson Beyond South Island and back, out along the Fiords in the west. There's a signpost at Bluff, that small point of land at the very southerly tip of South Island, New Zealand. The sign reads: Bluff. 46 degrees South, 168 degrees East. It is 18,958 Km from here to London as the fly crows - but only 35 km to Stewart Island, our next destination. We're taking a short holiday from motorhoming, an overnight away, to do a spot of birding. Meanwhile, our Australian travelling companions, Brian and Kathryn, will be heading 'somewhere north' in their own motorhome. If we can find our mobile phone we'll be able to catch up with them ... read more

I went for run this morning. In the early morning, the smell of coal fires hangs over this town as everyone seems to burn the stuff. Our own hotel has a coal shed much like someone might have a wood shed in Canada. I wanted to check out the beach so after a quick tour through town I head out into the country side, past numerous farms with horses and the local horse track, to the lagoon where there all lots of people fishing with oversized fishing rods or nets. The beach on the other side of his lagoon has huge waves and rips tides and looks quite treacherous. We have breakfast in the hostel kitchen which turns out to be huge and well set up with a massive dining room off it. After breakfast we ... read more

We moved on up the coast today headed for the town of Westport. En route we stopped at the town of Hokitaka , famous for its Jade. Though the place is a bit overrun with tour buses, it was interesting to visit the workshops and see Jade been cut and then carved as well as to find out about the history of Jade in the area going back to the discoveries in the 1960s and the first New Zealand Helicopters to haul it out. Our second stop was at the Pancake rocks and Blow holes in Punakaiki. The rock formations are incredibly layered and form pillars rising of the ocean. In places tunnels have formed that channel the waves into blow holes where the sea spray shoots up into the air. Our lodging in Westport is ... read more

Over morning coffee, Clive went through some ideas of routes we could take and offered some useful advice about how to try to fit the whole south island into 17 days of travel. We hit the road feeling refreshed after what felt like a really lovely break - even though it was only one night, it felt good to have stopped for long enough to see a bit of normality. At Clive’s suggestion, we took a leisurely drive up to Kaiteriteri beach. The sand was a yellowy orange colour, with water that was bright green in places; very different from any of the other beaches we’ve seen so far. There were lots of houses clinging to the hills around the bay which must have had spectacular sea views. We headed up to the entrance to the ... read more

We hopped on Dan's bus when we left Nelson, and were due to stay on his bus all the way down to Queenstown since we were not planning to stay anywhere more than one night (apart from Franz Josef which was already in the schedule). On our way to Westport, we stopped off at Nelson Lakes National Park and did a gorgeous walk around the lake there and took some nice photos. On our arrival at Westport, we decided to do some quad-biking (well, Wayne encouraged me to!) so after getting kitted out, we hopped on our bikes and followed the instructor down the practice track. I was so scared - I didn't feel safe at all and kept thinking I was going to tip over. Ok, so I rode like a granny to start with, ... read more

Day 18 - Westport Checked in for our flight at some god awful time in the morning. The plane was tiny! Two seats wide, no head room to stand up, fits 19 people and our air steward was also the pilot! The flight though was good as you never get up to high and we got a great view of Abel Tasman - will definitely have to go there next time we visit NZ. Got to Westport early and thought we'd kill a bit of time at the airport till we could check in but the airport turned out to be a shed so that idea went out the window. Luckily the place where we are staying were very accommodating and let us check in at 9am. Nice to be in a hotel instead of a ... read more

We left Nelson and headed towards the Nelson Lakes Nationial Park stopping off in Richmond to get supplies for a picnic lunch. We arrived next to the stunning Lake Rotoiti, surrounded by beautiful snow capped mountains. This has to be one of the most beautiful spots in the world! Nelson Lakes National Park is a rugged mountainous area well known for being home to a broad range of native New Zealand trees and birds. We took an hour long bush walk through native New Zealand beech forest which we didn't get to finish as we got caught up taking photos and had to rush back to the coach when we realised everyone had already had their picnics and we had to eat ours on the coach! An hour further south we stopped at Murchison and the ... read more

Guest writer, co-traveller Chris Higginson! So i hitched out of golden bay, which was my longest ever wait at 2.5 hours outside Nelson, then 1.25 hours a little way down the road shocking! But i eventually got there and met ben and sarah in Christchurch, not quite as planned but at least we got there. We had a couple drinks in town and then went back to our seperate hostels. Saturday we met up and then tracked down some friends of mine who are living in town building new bikes out of broken ones. We rode around town for a little while on 'mutant bikes' in the beautiful sun and had a really nice day. In the evening a friend of my friends was having a going away party so my post-birthday bash was tagged on ... read more

Attached are a few pictures of on our trip to the South Island. The trip went well and we are set up in a nice motel in Westport on the NW end of the South Island. We came through the Marlborough wine growing area, probably 60 k of grape vines outside of Blenheim following the Wairau River valley. Kiwi word for the day is POME. This is used to identify people from England or people who identify with England. Example might be, that’s what a POME would say. It stands for Prisoner of Mother England. There is also a bar on the Kapiti Coast called the Flaming POME. ... read more
