As expected the weather bomb arrived overnight into Westport.A howling wind from the northwest, driving rain and some thunder announced its arrival some time during the night. Dawn bought passing heavy showers with horizontal rain and a wind that was incessant. However it wasn’t that bad to stop most of our plans for the day. The bush train at Charleston however was only taking adventurers who wanted to get into the bush to do some rafting and other activities on the river. So as we were only up for the bush train ride we gave the drive out to Charleston a miss and instead headed straight for the seal colony at Tauranga Bay,south of Westport and on the southern side of Cape Foulwind,so named by Captain Cook in 1770 when his ship was blown offshore. We arrived ... read more

We managed another 'sleep-in' but still beat the sun rising over the hills of Akaroa to be up and about ready for a long day on the road. Today we meet up with family, who we will call 'The Hoofs' to shorten any description as the blogs unfold over the next few days while they join us on the roadtrip for 5 nights. So we need to be up and on the road aiming to meet The Hoofs after their flight arrives around 9.30am in Christchurch and they pick up their rental car and head for the meeting point of Darfield. No breeze at all this morning meant we could have breakfast on our terrace and watch the morning walkers as they strolled along the waterfront, many of them exercising their dog or in quite a few instances, dogs. Our ... read more

" Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did." Mark Twain Friday 10th March 2017 As one travels a few things fall into place tidily which makes it all so much easier and more enjoyable. One of them is information and believe me, there is tons of the stuff available. Early on we would pick up more brochures and maps than we could read in a lifetime and they simply piled up on the floor of the HBS. The solution was found and we now devote our attention solely to "AA Traveller Visitor Guide" and there is one for every region in NZ. Hugely informative about the region one is travelling through with pointers to all places of interest and all in one ... read more

Westport is north of Greymouth along a major scenic road route. Named as one of the best scenic drives in the world, the road hugs the coast, wild seas pound the cliffs and palm trees weather the wild windy conditions. Westport is a large town on the coast, set on the mouth of the Buller River. The Westport township was set up initially due to the discovery of gold and then coal was discovered. Today little active mining remains, industry is centred around fishing and tourism. The lighthouse at the mouth of the river to the sea has many plaques commemorating lives lost at sea. A couple of brave surfers enjoyed a great swell in the cold winter waters. Go and visit the Coaltown museum in the information centre on Palmerston St, which is the main ... read more

We had the morning to relax on the beach and get some sunbathing in before the chill of the South Island sets in further down the coast. The drive to Westport took about 4 hours so we had a tiptop ice-cream stop half way in a town called Mercherson. Westport is a small coal mining town but after dinner we headed back on the bus towards the coast for a walk. It went dark really quickly but the path was fairly easy to follow, unfortunately we couldn't tell if the seals were just rocks or not! We all congregated on the beach for an hour or so before heading back to the hostel.Bailey's bit: The hour congregation in the beach wasn't everyone huddled together, our driver had lit a bonfire ... read more

Had a great walk yesterday just souhth of Bleinheim, walked for about 2 hrs through the grazing land of aworking farm so very different to my previous walks the bush. Very hot abouth 28C. It was quiet all I could hear was the sound of seed pos bursting open in the heat. Then drove through mile up on mile of grapevines. SatNav told me to turn left in 123km which seemed to take forever. Thought I would start counting cars only saw 60 in 100km, and that included the ones that overtook me. Stayed at great site near Murchison last night lovely log fire in the kitchen. Took an walk nr old power station before I left Murchoson, took about an hr. Drove toward Westport and stopped at the longest swing bridge in New Zealand. Not ... read more

Outside its raining New Zealand Fashion, that is to say its heavy and warm. So its a good time to up-date you on our travels. Lets go back to that car park in Wellington, after a surprisingly good nights sleep we were up early to catch the 8am ferry to the South Island. Although we had some trepidation about this crossing, given its reputation , it was in fact remarkably smooth and the journey through Queen Charlotte Sound is particularly beautiful. So now begins our exploration of the South Island. Already we can see it is more rugged and sparsely populated. The traffic on the roads seems to comprise of Logging trucks or camper vans. The first part of our trip took us from Picton to Nelson. This begins with a drive through the Marlborough wine ... read more

I ... read more

When we arrived in Greymouth it was once again dark and hard to really see what the small west coast town looked like. We dropped the girls off at the hostel checked into a hotel and immediately looked for a bar to have a drink and celebrate our conquering of a glacier. After walking around for what seemed like an hour on a single street we finally settled on the Coal Face restaurant: stone grill. This was a great pick because they served their dinner on a stone grill, which meant I got to cook my main meal by myself on a stone at 400*. It was so much fun and mom and I could not be more amazed and entertained by it. Day 7 August 27: When we emerged from our hotel that morning we ... read more
