Hmm... remember two months ago, when I last blogged and said I wouldn't leave it as long the next time? Well now that I've reminded you can you please forget because I have run out of excuses! So: Singapore. Singapore was enjoyable. We arrived after a fairly long flight at 7am and were instantly faced with the culture shock that South East Asia had in store for us. We stood outside trying to enjoy an eagerly anticipated cigarette while being hounded constantly for taxi custom. We did a small amount of bartering (more as a formality than anything else. It was so cheap!) and got into a taxi with a very friendly man who spoke fantastic English. He gave us plenty of tips on what to pay for things and explained to us that our hostel ... read more

We travelled up from Cairns for a night and two days to see Cape Tribulation. It is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area While there we went on a riverboat tour where our guide pointed out to us and expanded our knowledge on the various different kinds of wildlife that inhabit the area. Most notably we saw two crocodiles; a baby one and a large one that commandeers that particular part of the lake. He's called Scarface for obvious reasons and was probably at least 7 ft long! Pretty amazing. We stayed in a cute hostel for the night and the next day took a walk through the rainforest where we saw snakes and spiders and a beautiful variation of terrain. The snap happy A Level photographer in me got a bit excited and ... read more

The Great Barrier Reef

It's hard to find the words to describe the Great Barrier Reef. To say it is a natural wonder of the world just doesn't seem enough. So you will have to bear in mind that as I am writing this every adjective I use to describe it feels like an understatement. It is the largest living thing on earth, can be see from outer space, and home to: more than 1,500 species of fish, as well as dolphins, stingray, jelly fish, sea snakes, molluscs and more. Many of them are endangered. Also several species of sea turtles come to the reef to breed. The conflicting thing about going to see it, even though nothing would have stopped me, was that I was absolutely terrified. My biggest fear is open water, specifically being abandoned in it. It's ... read more

We spent a few days between the beautiful Magentic Island and Mission Beach as just the five of us. We basically just relaxed during these days. Our hostel on Magentic Island was amazing. It was like something you'd expect to find in the Bahamas. Everyone stayed in little beach huts and you were literally right on the beach. It also had one of the very few bars on Magentic Island. Free Kayaking (or canaking as we dubbed it - a cross between canoeing and kayaking) was included in our stay so we spent a morning doing that. We went up to the shark nets to see if we could spot any (we couldn't) and toyed with kayaking around the cove to find an apparent nudist beach but decided to spare our eyes and tired limbs. Our ... read more

While still in Airlie Beach we realised that our new little family were heading on the same bus as us to stay in the same place and hostel. As Laura and I had been raving about Cowboy Toast on Fraser Island, as we occasionally do while drunk, I had decided to make it for everyone. Cowboy Toast is something I learnt how to make at uni and involves using a pint glass to make a hole in a slice of bread, then frying the bread, cracking an egg in the middle (and I also like to put a slice of cheese on) grilling the top and then putting the circle of bread back over the egg so that it looks like a cowboy hat. I hadn't accounted for the tiny and very hot kitchen but still ... read more

When we got to our next hostel in Rainbow Beach we went straight to a prep for our following adventure. The next day we were going to be getting on a ferry to Fraser Island. It is the world's largest sand island at 1630 km² and is a World Heritage site. We were put into groups of eleven and these were to be our family for the next three days. Our group consisted our group of five girls, three guys from Manchester, two girls from Essex and a guy from New Zealand who has done a lot of off-road driving (perfect for us as we were about to spent three days in an extended jeep, driving up and down beaches!). They all knew each other and we were all roughly the same age so we got ... read more

We travelled up the coast to Noosa Heads next. Our friend Claire decided to come with us which was great and we all planned to go to Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo which we had previously paid for and had expected to have been organised by the agent we booked with. Unfortunately when we rang to check we were booked on to the bus to the zoo for the next day we were told that we weren't and that it was full! This initiated a massive panic which could not be satisfied due to it being late afternoon with the agency being shut. We only had one full day in Noosa before we were booked to go somewhere else and really didn't want to miss the zoo, not only because we'd paid for it but, because we ... read more

We arrived in Byron Bay after another night bus. We'd managed to sleep on this one on account of the many jumpers and make shift pillows we'd bought with us. When we turned up at our hostel early morning our friends were waiting there for us complete with another friend Claire who'd we met and travelled with in New Zealand. Our Hostel the Arts Factory was this really relaxed hippy commune style hostel. It was really open plan with a small lake and hammocks scattered about the place. They also taught digeridoo lessons and did circus tricks at night. There were lots of different options for sleeping, such as a campsite, normal dorm rooms, or a tent-like creation they called a 'pentagon' which is basically like a glorified teepee. We opted for the latter and then ... read more

We only spent a couple of days in Sydney. It wasn't at all disappointing but there isn't really too much to report on the events there. As a large, and arguably the most famous city in Australia, it has a really thriving night life which we didn't actually take full advantage of. On our first night we were so tired and didn't make it out until about 11pm when we ended up in this bar completely full of drunk people. That might sound like quite a redundant comment. As we were completely sober, though, and so tired and subdued it was actually really hilarious to just sit in the background with a drink watching everyone else be very drunk. So that's what we did for a couple of. We then moved on to another bar where ... read more

We got to Canberra at 5am after our first trip on The Greyhound Bus (a hop-on, hop-off bus that runs 24 hours). In the interest of saving money we'd decided to take the night bus to save on a night's accomodation. Unfortunately, we hadn't been prepared for the air conditioning to be blowing full-strength all night and froze the entire way (we were in shorts and had no warm jumpers with us on the bus). We, therefore, didn't get much sleep. Hopefully we can blame this for what happened next. When we were in Melbourne we bought a really cheap second-hand Australia Lonely Planet, again in the interest of saving money. It was five years old but we didn't think this would be a problem. When we got to Canberra we consulted said guide book for ... read more
