We had some great time since the last entry. The weather got worse though, however we expected it so no disappointment there.. We tend to arrive somewhere and find some great walks which are usually free. New ZealandTourism is trying to make so much money on tourists, it is unbelievable. One of the walks was a walk round Punakaiki and Pororari River. You can hire a kayak there as well. The look of the rocks and mirror-like river is just beautiful. We went for a swim naked as well before all the tourists could see us! I really liked town called Hokitika, shame it was raining all day as we ended up in the library. Hokitika is known for a green stone called Jade http://www.jadecountry.co.nz/ It is a beautiful stone but expensive one! We headed towards ... read more
Our South Island Adventure - Last leg
Published: March 7th 2010Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » HokitikaSo we wake up really really really early this time as it is a long drive back to Christchurch. The plan is to be able to arrive by 3ish to return the van. We tried to be quiet as we left the camp site but that can actually be quite difficult with a noisy van but well we will never know if we woke anyone up. It was supposed to take us 2 and half hours to get to Hokitika where we planned to have breakfast and do some shopping as it is home to New Zealand's best Pounamu (jade) and hopefully be out of there by 12. So it was a little to my surprise when we arrived just after 8! Even more to my surprise was that all the shops were pretty much open. ... read more

Published: March 16th 2007Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » HokitikaHokitika I arrived in Hokitika on a Friday at about 2. By 3 I had seen everything Hokitika had to offer - and had 30 minutes to spare for a cup of tea. However my next wwoofing destination was a bus ride away and the bus only stops once a day. With hindsight I would have just used the 40 minute lunch break during the bus journey to see Hokitika and then carried on to Ross. Well with true hindsight I would have just stayed on to the glaciers and avoided one of the strangest weeks of my life. Hokitika is famous for jade carving and a Wild Foods Festival which takes place every March. I was a week early, but assumed I would be staying at the farm until at least the next Saturday. I ... read more
Chilling out in Ross
Published: February 20th 2007Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » HokitikaWell its been almost two weeks now since our last tramp, and we are still kicking about in Ross. We are staying at Ben's sister's house, earning our keep by painting the roof, chopping firewood, clearing scrub, foraging for blackberries and looking after our neice and nephew. We've done a couple of walks as well. It is official. Ben and I are appalling at fishing. We spent an entire afternoon on Lake Mahinapua fishing for evil perch and didn't get a single bite. This is despite John assuring us that the last time he came out with the kids they hauled in something like 27. (I secretly believe that is why there are none there anymore!) We also tried our hand at surf casting. Between us, we must have caught about 15 sharks but they were ... read more

Published: October 23rd 2006Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » HokitikaThursday- It was raining really hard so I doned my raincoat and waterproof trowsers and did a short walk through palms to the beach, where I was hit by Gale winds once out of the shelter of the trees. So i din't stop for a walk along the beach. I certainly know why the West coast is described as wild. Then I went back to pancake rocks again. I'm really glad I went the night before as I was a bit late after high tide and the blow holes were not very impressive. I then drove down to Hokitika and stayed in another place in the woods. This time with a very unsociable couple. ... read more

Published: September 13th 2006Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » HokitikaHey guys, Sorry its been a while but were gonna try and get you all caught up on our south island trip. So weve been on south island for about 8 days now and I should first let you know that if you're following our progress on a Itinerary you should prob just throw it away (at least as far as south island is concerned. Of the top of my head we were supposed to be in Christchurch for about 5 days then up to nelson, then arthurs pass, queenstown and so on. Well 5 days in christchurch turned into just over a week , but a very good week. Included in this week were watching canterbury play at jade, playing a round of golf staying up at a bar in town till 4am to watch ... read more
hi folks, I am well aware my colleagues have all submitted their own final entries and it is now (with much blinking back of tears and gnashing of teeth) I sign off also. I guess if I had to appraise the comparative media situation in New Zealand and the Midwest then it is that New Zealand, as far as print media goes, is in very good hands. The news saturation in The States means there are few excuses for people to wander around uninformed. That is not to say they don't. Local news stations, papers, even regional or state outlets, have a fairly narrow focus. I grew up in NZ with papers divided according to their spatial origin. Local news (be it town, district or city centric) may be found in the first section: the national ... read more
