I decided to treat myself to a lie in this morning, if feels like months since I didn't have to check out of a hostel or just be up early to plant trees or save the world! After last nights "activities" I was glad to just chill this morning and catch up with myself. Loaded with a full bowl of porridge in my tummy, I ventured down to the DOC office/visitor center to see what the island had to offer. I had already picked up two leaflets on tramping routes on the island, one the Rakiura track ( a great walk, 3 days, 2 nights) and the Northwest and Southwestern Circuits which are much longer (9-11 days) and require significant navigation skills. The DOC office was very useful as always with lots of brochures and useful ... read more

The poor weather continued. We woke up on Stewart Island to more rain and cold temperatures. I left the rest of the family hunkered down in the cabin and set out for a place called Mauri Beach. I borrowed a bike from the motel and headed across the island. I left the bike at the start of a well marked trail and headed along the coast. The rain forest is incredible - particularly considering how far south the island is. I walked along for a distance when the gravel path forked. One path was well graveled leading down toward the sea, the other was clearly less traveled but headed in the general direction of my destination. I had neglected to bring along a map and ignoring the lesson I should have learned from the Lookout (see ... read more

My knees completely gave out on the NW circuit. I spent the last 2 days trying to walk without bending my knees. So we ditched the packs and hired some kayaks instead. Paterson Inlet is a great place for kayaking and just a half hour walk from Oban. The West side of Stewart Island is apparently tilting up leaving the East side sinking under the ocean. This means a lot of the valleys on this side are being drowned, a recipe for great kayaking. There are heaps of bays and islands, and lots of rivers to look around. We spent a fabulous afternoon in the sun paddling about, seemingly the only ones on the water (apart from the blue penguins). ... read more

After a brief trip to Wellington and Auckland for weddings and visas, we headed down to Stewart Island with our friends Linda and Gerad to do the North West Circuit. At the time, it seemed like a good idea to do the Southern Circuit as well. So, once again, we donned huge packs and set to it. (Maybe we are getting a bit lighter, but it seemed easier this time). Stewart Island is amazing. The North West Circuit skirts the coast in a big loop from Oban (the main township there). The trip is supposed to take around 10 days. The first part was on the great walk, and this was agony in boots with a heavy pack. Under the pier at Port William, an enormous blue cod swam around, laughing at Ben for forgetting his ... read more

The third and smallest of New Zealand's three islands, is the kiwi haven of Stewart Island, a mere boat ride South of the South Island across the Foveaux Strait. The reason most people visit is for the pure wilderness of the place, the opportunity to do some cracking tramping and the added bonus of a rare spotting of a kiwi in the wild. We spent a night in Invercargill, a last minute decision made after driving to and making an inspection of the port town of Bluff and deciding that this drab and depressing place, was not where we wanted to lay down our bags for the night. We also got the added benefit of free freshly baked bread in the hostel we stayed at. The boat trip across from Bluff across the Foveaux Strait takes ... read more

Before humans arrived in New Zealand, there were no land mammals (other than the bat). This meant no foxes, dogs, cats, rats, stoats, weasels, possums or in fact any predators, which made the country a paradise for birds. It was so safe here, that some of them (like the kiwi) lost the ability to fly. Then man came (from nearby Polynesian islands) bringing with them a host of bird-munching pets, which found their way into the wild. Enjoying the easy pickings of flightless birds, these predators exploded in population, and wiped out 50% of native bird species within a few years. Stewart Island is located south of the South Island, and is sometimes thought of as New Zealand's third island. It is more than 90% National Park, and it only has one town, Oban. Here they ... read more

After leaving the sun and warmth of the Coramandel I arrived at Christchurch airport and immediately started pulling out the jumpers!! I met up with Helen who, having arrived on an earlier flight from Welly, was slowly loosing the will to live.... apparently 3 hours at Christchurch airport is a bit too long! We eventually got our Ezy hire car.. not so easy as the company name would have you believe... and finally hit the road down to Dunedin, which was where we planned to spend the first night. The drive down wasn't particularly interesting scenery (think flat farmland) but we had some nice stops at Timaru, Omaru and the the Moeraki Boulders where Hels and I suprised ourselves at just how many photo's you could take of rocks! To be fair they were pretty impressive ... read more

It was an early morning to catch the 9am ferry to Stuart Island. The guy was right about Bluff, absolutely nothing there at all. The ferry was a half full catamaran which skimmed across the water in just an hour. Stuart Island has 400 residents, plenty of posh holiday homes and a small shop and pub. We got to the hostel to find it shut. While we waited we were subjected to the thoughts of this so called experienced hiker from England. He was about 50 and spent about 10 minutes criticising everything about New Zealand and everything about the people of New Zealand, all this in front of a Kiwi couple. His annoying habit of having to always be right didn’t stop there. Later on that day there were two people getting ready to go ... read more
