While the cat is away... I have just come back after a week on holidays in Denmark, and things have been progressing at lightening speed in the garden! I was literally in shock when I visited the sunny side of the garden which has now erupted with life (like the Icelandic volcano!). Getting greener! The mixed salads and rockets have taken this corner by storm. So much so that I had to harvest some for my lunch! Last years rocket has even come into flower - I'm fairly sure you're not meant to let this happen, but it's a sign of progress - right? The spinach is fighting for space next to the mixed leaves, but I think it might be a little early to harvest this mighty giant! The mixed flowers (must make sure ... read more

Things are progressing nicely in the garden. The Main Bed The sunny side (nearest the house) has seen the most activitiy. The flowers (including sunflowers!), mixed lettuce and spinach have all popped up to say hello. I've also (finally) got the potatoes into the ground after their chitting phase. Possibly a little late but fingers crossed they will grow and we can harvest them! Jens Portable Garden The two trays I've planted up (as a mobile garden) are coming on very well. Similar to the main bed I have flowers, mixed lettuce, rocket and spinach germinating. BUT to my suprise I have some beans (french hunter) coming out. Interestingly they have popped up here, but not in the main bed, just yet! Very exciting! New Additions I've recently planted some additional bits and pieces in pots ... read more

How it started… In the last few months I've really been trying to get into "birding" (I do love the way they turn nouns into verbs over here!). There are a lot of birds about and as a result a lot of jobs in the birding field, so as a sounds career investment, I decided I should start to devote some time to swatting up. It all started when some wonderful friends who I met in Limerick gave me presents of bird books before I left. That's where the ball starts rolling. Earlier this year, I decided to do a course on bird identification run by the BTO for beginners in February in south Devon in a fantastic spot called Slapton Ley. The course was brilliant, and armed you with the necessary skills to feel ... read more

So I thought I'd keep anyone who's interested up to date on the progress of our newly planted raised beds here in sunny Taunton. Work on the proposed garden began months ago, when the idea was first conceived. Raised beds would be the challenge, and a lot of people (housemates, friends, family and international visitors!) would lend a hand to get the project underway! The building... It started with the construction of the red brick wall, to hold the raised bed in. There were wheelbarrows, bricks, cement, walling lines and plenty of cups of tea! Once the wall was built, then came the challenge of filling in the raised bed. This was a bit of a stumbling point in the action plan, as we had to wait for the right materials to become available! Through freecylce ... read more

Where does the time go? It’s almost a third of the way through 2011 and I feel like I haven’t drawn breath since Christmas. Although, as you are probably aware, I love being busy, and find it very hard to say no to anything! So here’s what’s been happening in my little world for the last few months. Entertaining Visitors After 6 months of drout, the seas have parted and ryanair has supplied me with a host of visitors from far and wide – thank you Michael! Each person who has braved the trip has been exposed to a slight different side of Somerset – depending on my thoughts on what might actually interest them! The common themes are getting out into the countryside, seeing some wildlife, being active, drinking cider, and braving my cooking! From ... read more

This blog was written on the 6th of February... On Sunday I found myself looking in a window into the past. On a blustery grey day I wandered along the rocky coast of west Somerset, the Jurassic coast. The cliffs of pale limestone and dark slate towered above me and crumbled beneath my feet. The beach was empty. I put my head down and faced the wind and wandered along the scattered stones looking for treasure. For a moment I forgot where I was, what day of the week it was, how my head hurt from the night before and marveled at the wonder of time. Trapped, petrified in rock all around me was the evidence that life existed long before me, my parents, my grandparents, before any human and will continue long after my soul ... read more

Sitting hiding in the corner of a busy starbucks taking full use of their free internet, newton faulkner in my ears and caffeine in my tummy. I'm ready to recount the last few weeks adventure in a land of fresh bread and cheese and stupidly cheap wine... The first thing I will remember is the feeling of change, as I boarded the train to Bristol where I would meet the travelling crew who were on route from Limerick via Wales, England (and the moon) to the south of France where the big hills waited for us. All went to plan and after a few hours chilling (literally) at the train station chatting to some other solitary travellers (mostly welsh) I was aboard the big blue fun bus and the epic had began! The trip to Chamonix ... read more

Let me see, where to start! Hello to all and apologies for the mass update. For those of you who have got hand written letters in the last few weeks, count yourself lucky!! My hand is tired and I’ve run out of stamps!! It’s been a hectic 3 weeks since I arrived here in Somerset. I’m starting to settle into how things work with the National Trust and AONB crew out at Fyne Court. I spend 4 days a week with the NT team and one day a week with the AONB team. The NT are responsible for taking care of a number of different sites/properties within the area, Fyne Court being one of them (where the “office” is based) and some other properties which are a little further away. The properties are a mix of ... read more

Just a quick update on what i've been up to since I departed the island... I've been moving fast, as the pressure is on! Sunday August 2nd Managed to grab a lift from Andrew a sheep farmer from Winton from the ferry to Invers (Invercargill, but how the locals call it!) and picked up a bottle of wine along the way! I had a few hours to kill in Invers, and I'd pretty much seen all the sights on my first trip through, so I decided to take in some Harry Potter and headed to an early showing of the newest release with all the kiddies! I really enjoyed the film, but there was something about being at the cinema on my own that made me very lonely all of a sudden! From Invers I caught ... read more

With a slightly sore head after a few too many "bulmers" last night I made my way down to the warf (pier) this morning to head out searching for oysters with Jack and his crew for the day. It was a beautiful morning, with the sun casting lovely colors over halfmoon bay. I popped down to the warf and wandered about for a few minutes before the boat, the Nikita arrived. I noticed a crate of Speights beer sitting wrapped up on the warf, which seemed strange. I didn't think something like that would survive very long on it's own out in the open around here! The Nikita arrived in shortly and thankfully Jack was on board, so I knew I was in the right place at the right time. I'd mentioned in the bar a ... read more
