The past two days of our trip have been very different than the first 2.5 weeks. The first part was very active, hiking, kayaking, and exploring remote locations nearly every day. Now we are making our way up the more populated east coast of the South Island, spending more time with the city dwellers. It's a weird feeling! Yesterday was a day spent focusing on penguins! It was a bit of a rainy and cool day, but the penguins' daily activities don't change on rainy days, so we were out and about with them. We went out in the afternoon to Penguin Place, a yellow eyed penguin reserve on the Otago Peninsula outside the city of Dunedin. In a nutshell, a man bought a 1000 acre sheep and cattle farm on the Otago Peninsula years ago, ... read more

Howdy everyone, we have now arrived at Oamaru which is by the coast. We left Akaroa at 1/4 to 9 this morning and started the 'hairy scarey ride' here. It was raining so hard, completely different than yesterday! now have to get the winter clothes out !! Anyway took us 5 hours with one coffee stop on the way, so not too bad. We just keep forgetting how long the distances are, you look at the map and think, that's not far and then you work it out and it's like half a day gone. It seems what is estimated, you need to add a further hour on the trip. We arrived at 'Old Bones lodge', very nice, we have our own room indoors !! That's a bonus !! Shared bathroom but very nice. The communal ... read more

Oh yes, they seem to have very strange seaweed here, Gloria the owner of the lodge said that the tourists from the North Island collect it. I said 'what do they do with it' she said, they stick it in their gardens. Gloria did the same and said it looked awful, so got rid of it. I know what she's on about, blinkin weird stuff if you ask me !... read more

The East Coast. Na Moeraki stoppen we even in Oamaru.

Only two sleeps to go until I board a plane in Dunedin and head off with the Ice Fernz to Europe! The team will first fly to Prague in the Czech Republic for a two week training camp before heading to Asiago, Italy for the IIHF Div IIA World Championships. The championships begin on April 6th, with the Ice Fernz facing off against South Korea. The New Zealand women's team will then take on Great Britain, Australia, Italy and Poland. The team who wins the most games will be promoted to the next division up, while the team losing the most games will be dropped to the division below. It rained over night but the morning finally opened up to clear skies. After yesterday it was good news. Our breakfast was once again set in style in the main dining room. Most of us had a continental breakfast but then opted for scrambled eggs as well. Allison and Bruce looked after us with grace and style with Allison imparting her knowledge on her self sufficient skills. We eventually gathered up all our wet/dry gear from yesterday and said our goodbyes to our most excellent hosts. What a place to stay. We first retraced our tracks to where we had gone wrong yesterday (up and down the hills) on Burnside Road then onto gravel for a bit. It was still water logged so we biked on the road. After maybe 12kms we got to the old ... read more

As expected from the weather forecast, it started to rain. We left in rain, we arrived in rain. We geared up for the wet weather and left Glenmac and headed for Duntroon down country roads and then onto the main Waitaki road to Duntroon. We had a head wind which wasn't too much of an issue if you could "draft" behind someone else. Just before Duntroon we stopped to check out the Maori Rock Drawings on a limestone cliff close to the road. Much of drawings were either worn off by weather or animals rubbings against them. I found the fossils in the limestone far more interesting - of course! We then stopped in at the Flying Pig Café. A great place to stop. The building had been beautifully restored and decorated as had the surroundings. ... read more

Tuesday 10th December, 2013. Dunedin to Oamaru We woke up quite late - exhausted after yesterday's marathon adventures. We were in no rush to leave Dunedin as we had a tour of Speights Brewery booked for 12.30 pm. We decided to pass the first couple of hours visiting the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. The entry was free. The first room contained loads of 'artworks' by some geezer who liked to play around with fluorescent tubes (M wasn't impressed). There was a small room exhibiting some more traditional paintings by Frances Hodgkins. She had travelled widely and used the medium of watercolour very skillfully. Next was a room full of photographs by Gregory Crewdson. These were all scenes from the USA. They were very moody pieces and certainly made you feel that you wouldn't want to live ... read more

Today after waking up feeling fairly ill, I had John summon Deb who came immediately with a plethora of drugs to help me get ready for our day's journey to Omaru. By the time everyone had breakfast (I didn't dare), we were on the way to Omaru which was 250 km (about 135 miles). We stopped along the way at a nice little town called Timaru and had lunch. I was feeling okay by then so I ordered a bowl of mushroom soup. (BIG MISTAKE). After checking out the Farmer's Market down by the water, we headed south again to the town of Omaru where we would spend the night in a 3-bedroom house. It was really cute and had plenty of space for us. Everyone was excited to drop our things off and go exploring, ... read more
