22nd February 2009 - THE FERRY RIDE & ON TO NELSON!!!
The Ferry ride was good though we couldn't sit outside for long as the wind would have knocked us off the boat. Nat still didn't feel too good from the night before in wellington and so we found a seat in front of the big screen ready for a movie and didn’t move much. I found my way to the café to buy a brew and by the time I came back Nat was asleep. I joined her and we both missed the whole of the first film!! When I woke up the second film was just starting…bit of a kids flick but I watched most of it anyway. Nat felt a little better when she woke up and watched a bit too!!
As we got nearer to the ferry port at Picton we saw the most amazing scenery outside. Land seemed to appear all around us despite being in the middle of the sea and everything was so green. We kept braving the gale force winds to go outside to take a few photos but you couldn’t stay outside for long and I had to grip onto my
camera like I used to grip onto my milkybar buttons as a baby!! No one found it easy taking candy from me I’ll tell you!!!
We got off the ferry at around 4.30pm and set off on the way to Nelson. The petrol light was flashing and neither of us had any money on us…oh dear!! As much as I would have loved to test out my dad’s theory of cars being able to do 100 miles on red, we didn’t think it would be wise to do so. we required a cash point and a petrol station…..and fast!! We didn’t come across one for a good few miles and luckily the car held out!! Maybe my dad’s theory is correct after all!! We drove to Blenheim where we found both the required items and then I drove the rest of the way to Nelson. Pretty tired by the time we got there and I think the lack of sleep the previous night had caught up with us both!!
Once checked in to our hostel - Accents on the Park - we got some food from the bar as we were too tired to cook and then went
to bed at around 8.30pm. Sometimes you need that early night!!!
23rd February 2009 - A DAY NOT DOING MUCH!!!
We both slept in. Too tired to move!! It was like having a proper Sunday lie in!! When I did get up I made my way to the corner shop in my pajamas (I have learnt to live with how I look on a morning) to get some milk and then returned to the hostel where we had brekkie and then dressed ready for the day. We lazed around the hostel until around 11.30am before heading out and into town. It was a nice little town to look around. Nat took her ring total up by one when she bought another that looked like a snake. Cool!!
After browsing town we set off on a long walk to the beach. It was a long walk too…1 hour it took despite the hostel man telling us that it would take 20 minutes!! And no…we didn’t take any wrong turns…it was one straight road!! It was a lovely day and we both enjoyed the walk in the shining sun!! The water looked nice too…very blue!! Once we reached the
beach it was lunch time and so we went to a tasty looking café for a toasted sandwich before heading onto the beach.
The beach was nice. It was no Australian beach as the sand was not nearly as nice but it was good to lie on all the same and once again the surroundings were fantastic!! We laid there for a couple of hours reading and writing postcards before setting off on the long walk back into town. Once again….I got injured!! Walking along, tripped up and cut all my toe open till it bled!! Not good…..I definitely think it’s someone else’s turn for my injury bad luck…I have had more than my share!! I am a bit worried actually that I am going to do something really bad so if I carry on this way!! And my shoulder is still playing up!! I don’t think it’s muscular anymore and think it could be something worse!! Hope not!!
Once back in town we had another browse around. Nat bought some new flipflops…her 6th pair on this trip as her others keep breaking and I got my photos put onto a CD….safety comes first…back up your photos!! We
then spent an hour in the library making use of the free internet before coming out and running into the chuckle brothers….Bobby and Dave. They had just arrived after having a nightmare Ferry journey. We all had a quick chat before heading our separate ways and back to our hostels. I still find it weird that you travel for a few days (or more in such as Hatty’s case) with people and get to know them and then most of the time you never see them again!! Sure we would find some new travel companions soon enough!!!
Back at the hostel, we chilled out, read our books, wrote our journals, chatted and tehn went to bed. It had been a nice relaxed day but we had to be up early in the morning again for a 7am set off to Abel Tasman!!
