You may be interested to know that your reactions are being discussed in a Thai-language discussion forum. They're a bit alarmed that you think you're being taken! I'd like to suggest, respectfully, that you stick to your first reaction about the people you meet in Thailand -- their friendliness and eagerness to help are not an illusion, and they're not all in on a scheme against you. It may be true that you could do the trip for less, especially if you don't mind searching around each city for hostels with mosquito problems and no hot water -- but why not enjoy the convenience of having it all planned in advance, and staying in better facilities? That's part of the value you're getting for your 500 pound. You may be very glad to be free of those worries when you get out into the countryside where not so much English is spoken. You're definitely doing the right things so far. I'll keep watching your reports, and I hope you have a great time there. Make sure you get an authentic Thai massage if you haven't yet, and don't be afraid to stray off the tourist path for your meals.
