7th MAY 2009 - ARRIVAL IN CANCUN!!
We arrived in Cancun at around 7.30pm. Everything seemed different as soon as we stepped off the bus and I could tell that we were in a totally different place to where we had been previously. Everyone seemed to be speaking English, loads of tourists about, touts on the streets and a real holiday feel to it!! We went onto the street to try and follow our own direction to the hostel which was in downtown Cancun…could have been dangerous considering our previous attempts at following simple directions! A guy working the streets came over and asked us where we were heading. We told him and he walked us to it…good job too as we would have headed in completely the opposite direction! We passed the biggest McDonalds that I ever saw…the M was a huge beacon of light and we used it as a marker for our hostel as it was just down the street. Loving it!!
The hostel was dead. Once again everyone scared off by the swine flu…really affecting tourism!! There were only us 2 in a big dorm that was like sleeping in a tree house. It suited us
as it meant we would get some peace and it wouldn’t get so hot and stuffy! Loads of little geckos like I had never seen before. They were of a similar size but these ones jumped like little dragons!! I liked them from a distance!!
We dumped our stuff and went for a wander into the main area. So quiet in all the bars and restaurants. We fancied a nice little beverage and tried our first Sangria of Mexico…very tasty indeed. I asked the guy walking by to take our photograph and wished I had never bothered. He said he would if he could take one with his own camera first. He worked there so we just assumed it was for some promotional pictures or something. As soon as he had taken it, he whipped a couple of photo frames out and a bottle of Tequila with a couple of randoms on it. “How many do you want…special price” Erm…none!! He wouldn’t give up. When we eventually made it clear that we weren’t buying he then offered to use our cameras to take our photos for us….at a price of 50 pesos!! He had got to be kidding…pay him
money to use my own camera to take a photo of myself! Ha…hardly!! We waved him off and asked the next lady who came by…she took it for us free of charge!!
The drink was nice and although quiet we had a nice evening. One thing that really annoyed me though is that all the prices were in American dollars rather than Mexican pesos. Really weird!! Fair enough a lot of American tourists go on holiday there but a country shouldn’t give up part of its identity because of it!! We kept having to ask them to tell us the price in Pesos. Imagine if England did that with all the nationalities we have living and visiting there. The pound would be extinct!!
As the night set in we headed back to the hostel and went to bed. I was knackered and dropped straight off. Nothing like a bit of Sangria to help one sleep!!
8th MAY 2009 - RELAXING IN CANCUN!!!
I woke up at 7am. We were in no rush to do anything particular except go to the beach and so I left Nat sleeping whilst I went and lay outside in the breeze in
a hammock. I’ve got to get myself one of those…so comfy!! I thought about going home as it was 3 weeks to the day. Still doesn’t quite feel real as these last few months have gone by so quickly!! After a while the thinking hurt my brain (doesn’t take much these days) and I went to investigate what was in store for the free breakfast. I saw bread and jam at first which was ok, but then I saw bananas…and milk…and yoghurt…and melon!! Wow…a feast fit for a king!! Definitely beats KFC in the finger licking good stakes and I tucked in!! Heaven! Following breakfast I practically ran back to the room to tell Nat about what was in store…she was chuffed too and went to tuck in!!
After breakfast and once we were ready we headed out to catch the bus to the beach where all the all inclusive hotels were. It was a stunning beach and the water was an electric blue!! The Caribbean was really as you would imagine…gorgeous!! It almost looked like a painting! Loads of big all inclusive hotels lined up on the front…made us think about a luxury holiday. I know people think
that traveling the world is one big holiday but it really isn’t. It is living and sacrificing…don’t get me wrong, to travel is amazing but it is definitely not luxurious!!
So much to do in Cancun for holiday makers but not on our budget. We were happy with laying on the beach for a good few hours and enjoying the sea. The sea wasn’t even that cold!! A plane flew over advertising a club…big banner saying that they survived the pig flue and were now back open for business. Looked like it wasn’t only the ruins that had been closed down!! We spent a good few hours on the beach. I burnt my bottom in the sun…so hot you could have fried eggs on it!! I got a little worried as surely only gingers go that red!! I hoped I didn’t have the ginger gene in me…nightmare!!
Off the beach we headed back on the bus to the hostel. We made us of the free internet for a while before getting changed and showered ready to go out. I looked like I belonged on the scrap heap…my clothes were creased and bobbly, my hair needed intensive care, there
were dark circles under my eyes and my bottom was on fire!! That’s traveling for you!! Once out and in town, we picked a restaurant and sat to have a meal and a couple of cocktails. Yet another daily treat!! We really were stretching the definition of ‘treat’ to its limits!! After food and drink we were both wiped and we headed back to the hostel where we chilled out and chatted for a while before going to sleep!
