Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

Leaving the glacier behind and heading foe a small town called makarora. On the way we stopped at fox glacier I have a look from a distance. Fox is just another glacier but boring because it doesn't have the same hilly landscape. And after that we drove down to mirror lake. A lake that reflect everything just like a mirror. It was amazing to we the reflection of he mountains and the pine Forrest. Have a look at facebook for a picture. We ten moved on I some nice viewing spots along he coast including a nice waterfall. In March, we headed off on a 2-week holiday of NZ’s South Island. We used a 'hop on hop off' bus service called Stray Backpacker Bus NZ to get around, and our big highlights were swimming with dolphins, catching our own fish for dinner and climbing a glacier. Stops 4 to 6 : West Coast of the South Island; Brewery and glacier, nature and nurture (N) The west coast of New Zealand is known for its raw natural beauty: towering mountains, rugged rainforests, magnificent glaciers and beautiful beaches. It is not densely [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone!! This one is going to have to be super duper quick because i really need to get to the airport soon! The next day we left Franz Josef and headed towards Makarora where we were to stay the night! On the way we stopped off a few interesting places for once.... the Fox Glacier, the mirror lake near Mt Cook and then a beautiful clear, but freezing river, where the brave ones had a swim! The drive wasnt pleasant though as for the second or third day the airconditioning wasnt working and it was soooo hot!! Although that made [View Full Entry]

Fox Glacier!
Crossing scary shaking bridge to river!
Me at Fox Glacier!

Fox Glacier to Makarora Thursday 11th December 2008 NOTE: Have just realised that I have put the dates as “November’ instead of “December’ on the last two blogs so need to edit them if possible. Sorry for any confusion! It’s an age thing! We woke up this morning to mist and rain and it was impossible to see either Fox Glacier or Mounts Cook and Tasman beyond. Access to the glacier was closed due to the big landslide so we decided to “hit the road”, not literally of course, we leave that to the poor possum, colloquially called “Road Pizz [View Full Entry]

When we left Franz Josef on the wednesday morning the weather was if possible even worse than the day we'd arrived, it was feezing and the rain was really coming down. It was so cold that it was snowing up at the top of the mountains rather than raining so at least we did wake up to snow capped mountains surrounding the whole town, which made it look lovely even if the weather was awful. We made a quick stop at the other glacier New Zealand has which is not far from Franz Josef, Fox Glacier but we didn't stay [View Full Entry]
