The day before I had bought a gondola ticket as part of the Punting & Tram tickets. I also purchased shuttle bus tickets so that I could get there quickly. The shuttle bus left from the front of the i-Site every hour. I had some time to kill before the next bus was due to depart, so I did a quick wander around the Canterbury Museum and got some chips for lunch in the café. I then waited out the front of the Museum for the shuttle bus. I was the only one on the bus! Once at the top of the gondola, the views were really worth it - I would definitely recommend it to anyone that likes views over cities. ... read more

Botanical Gardens i-Site Within the botanical gardens is the Christchurch i-Site, their tourist information centre. I was just in time to be able to go in before it closed, and arranged tickets for the following day. I bought a pass that covered the tram, gondola and punting. I was told to get to the punting early and to see if there were any spaces available on the early punts. Peacock Fountain Whilst at the botanical gardens, I also saw the Peacock Fountain, bought by the Christchurch Beautifying Society from money bequeathed by John Thomas Peacock, which was first unveiled in 1911 in a different location. It has been at its current location in the botanical gardens since 1996. Canterbury Museum Right next door to the botanical garden... read more

Cathedral Square Cathedral Square, locally known simply as the Square, is the geographical centre and heart of Christchurch, New Zealand, where the city's Anglican cathedral, Christchurch Cathedral is located. The square stands at the theoretical crossing of the city's two main orthogonal streets, Colombo Street and Worcester Street, though in practice both have been either blocked off or detoured around the square itse... read more

Transfer from the Airport to the Ibis On the afternoon I arrived, I was met at the airport by the transfer arranged by AATKings. I also met another couple that was on the same tour as me. The first thing I did was get a Vodafone card for my phone so I could access data. I paid $49 for a package, but to be honest, I burnt through it quickly and didn't top it up and just relied on the bus, hotel and other free wifi I found. The bus driver took us on a magical mystery tour around Christchurch and showed us some things I had read about and decided to go back to. Once we were dropped at the hotel I had to get the guy from reception to break into my suitcase as ... read more

Christchurch Cathedral The Christchurch Cathedral was built between 1864 and 1901. Unfortunately, it has been badly damaged in the recent earthquakes, and part of the front façade was demolished after the earthquakes. There is great debate at the moment as to what to do with the cathedral - demolish it or restore it, and the courts are involved. Personally, I think it would be great to see it restored, however, if it's as badly damaged as the experts say it is, then to create a new 'modern' cathedral might be the way to go.... read more

Isaac Theatre Royal Leaving the cathedral square I could see the Isaac Theatre Royal through what is now an open space, which was probably a building before the earthquakes. "When work on the third incarnation began on 20 November 1906 the Christchurch Press confidently stated that the building would be ‘one of the most modern and comfortable south of the line’. The Australian brothers Sydney and A.E. Luttrell designed the original French Renaissance-style building, and acted as architects and structural engineers during its 15-month construction." Colombo Street I walked along Colombo Street for a while. This area had been cordoned off when I was in Christchurch in 2013. Cashel Street Re:START Mall I headed towards the Cashel Street Re:START mall, but unfortunately, the shops were all shut as it was too late. I was actually hoping I would find somewhere for dinner, but no such luck. There was also some cute street art. When I was here in 2013 the container mall was bigger, as the new buildings that were almost finished hadn't even started being built. "Re:START is a temporary mall built from shipping containers in Christchurch Central City, New Zealand. It was a response to the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, which destroyed most buildings in City Mall (Cashel and High Streets), and res... read more

Leaving Sydney Getting to the airport The first part of my journey was to get to the airport. As I live in Western Sydney, and the trip to the airport can take at least an hour (depending on the time of day), and the fact that I had a super early flight, I decided to get to the airport the afternoon before I was due to fly out, and stay at a hotel at the airport. I'm glad I did, as the trains weren't running in the Blue Mountains, and there were buses replacing trains to Blacktown. Luckily I had a friend drop me off at Penrith Station, where I hoped to catch an express bus to the city, however, it wasn't running, so I just waited with the others that were stuck like me trying ... read more

We slept in a manner of speaking for our first night in the van. Pillows are 2 thin little wafers, blankets one thin quilt, so our little electric heater went flat out all night. A visit to an op shop is on the cards very soon for 2 more pillows, a blanket, plus a basin for carrying washing up, umbrellas, door mat, and a fry pan with a lid. And to make it even more tough we had a 6am start in order to catch to 8-15am departure of the TranzAlpine express. This train takes you from the Christchurch train station, on the east coast of the South Island, through the Arthur's Pass and onto Greymouth which is on the west coast. Two vastly different climates, west being temperate and wet, east dry and cold. The train carriages ... read more
