After staying with Paul and Joanne we stayed with Jason's friend 'Jon' and his family in the St Lucia area of Brisbane. This gave us more of an Australian city life experience and also some pool time! Jons girlfriends mother Helen very kindly took us up the Sunshine coast north of Brisbane. This is where we got to visit Steve Irwins Australia Zoo. This is a fantastic zoo and I got to stroke and cuddle wombats! We later went onto visit Caloundra where Helen lives and the Eumundi Markets. This is an excellent craft market where you can get miniature pancakes as well. We spent Australia Day (Jan 26th) in Brisbane watching the fireworks along the river. A few days later we flew off to Christchurch, New Zealand for the start of our three week tour ... read more

If you were curious, two days of cycling from dusk until dawn amount to the equivalent of a two hour drive. Mind you, time estimates are determined by super highways, not super cyclists. What with tea and tinkle breaks, my travel time averages around 11 kilometres an hour (~5 mph). Fortunately, there are fewer monster trucks and speed demons to compete with on the farm roads, which remain nameless in my dodgy book of maps mistakenly labeled the NewZealand Handy Atlas . There are, however, a plethora of serious cyclists who look back with pitiful expressions as they whish past on their way "around the block"... certain to be no less than 30 k's for these krazy kiwis. At least fifteen of these high-intensity tri-athletes have zoomed past, but only one remembered to wave. While the ... read more

Here we are again, in an internet cafe in Christchurch. We leave tomorrow for Thailand at 3:00pm from Auckland and arrive in Bangkok, Thailand at 10:00pm, after a 12 hour flight. Somewhere in there we travel back in time five hours. After our arrival, we have to navigate our way through a huge city with no order in the way its streets and street numbers are assigned and find some road named Khao San to find a place to sleep. The adventure continues...In Thailand by the time this happens it may not be much later than midnight, pretty late, however being accustomed to New Zealand time, this is sometime aroung 5:00am. But I guess we're still young and since our fly by the seat of our pants attitude has led us this far, why not see ... read more

Hello all, So we just posted our last update but have a little time, so you get a double dose today! We left Takaka, went to Arthur's Pass and Castle Hill for bouldering for a couple days (high altitude, very chilly at night) and are now in Christchurch. More on Christchurch after we explore it - so far we have mostly seen the inside of this internet cafe - nothing fancy, but the owners must know an aspiring painter, plenty of Renoir knock-offs! So, more on the little details of New Zealand. To begin, there are many, many sheep here. Emphasis on the MANY. Also, the Kiwis tourism industry has kept the fact that the roads here are incredibly windy to themselves. The hairpin turns have been awe inspiring (and stomach turning)! We've mostly explored small ... read more

We left Kaikoura just as their annual Seafest began, and tourists started flooding into the city. We drove about two and a half hours to the beautiful city of Christchurch, and spent a few hours wandering around the city center. We explored the botanic garden, and punted down the Avon River in this very English inspired city. It was a very different (and welcome) boating experience from the day before. Calm, quiet, no swells, and no buckets needed. From Christchurch, we took the summit road over the mountains surrounding the city, all the way out to Banks Peninsula. Brian's knuckles were white as a sheet when we arrived at the Le Bons Bay Backpackers, our accomodations for the next two days. The roads were full of amazing, "absurdly beautiful" vistas, hairpin turns and steep climbs and ... read more

I'm not quite entirely sure how I managed to miss out writing about the 7th! Considering it was my trip to Milford Sound which was awesome! Even though the weather was a little dull and rainy it was still one of the most amazing places I've ever seen. Anyway, coming forwards in time, yesterday afternoon I went horse riding at the Dart Stables and got to ride a horse called Sledge who starred in Lord of the Rings!! Really enjoyed the experience as have never been on a horse before, and he was so gentle! Today travelled up from Queenstown to Christchurch, was the longest day of travelling so far covering somewhere in the region of 500km. Christchurch does seem very 'English Town' in style, am going to have a relaxing day tomorrow and maybe do ... read more

V Aucklande sme vybehli von z letiskovej haly v paperovych bundach a s nasadenymi mackami a cakanmi pripraveni na Novo-Zealandsku zimu..

So, I am back from the "ski" trip. I put that word in quotes only because it was meant to be a ski trip, but did not really turn out that way. Let's see, where to start... First off, Shelby lost her passport, so she had to leave a day early and go back up north to Auckland which is where the U.S. passport services is to get a new one. Now, why is it in Auckland when Wellington is the capital and where the Embassy/Consulate are located? We could never figure this out. We all get to Christchurch finally and pick up our car. It's a Toyota Corolla, nothing special, but it will work....at least we thought. We drive west towards to the mountains, stopping in Springfield to get our ski passes. We were thinking ... read more

I left Christchurch going south west, right into the heart of the Southern Alps, to Mt. Cook. I took the scenic route that goes through Mt. Hutt - that’s the ski area closest to Christchurch. The route is absolutely amazingly gorgeous. I drive and I feel like I am inside a postcard. I couldn’t take pictures because it would require a panoramic lense - the beauty is just all around me. It’s an amazing combination of light green fields, darker green where the trees begin on the mountain slopes, then black and white (rocks and snow) and then blue for the surprising blue skies. Yes, it is winter here but I’ve been blessed with beautiful weather, only some single clouds in the sky. After about 400 km I reach Mt. Cook. It’s probably my toughest driving ... read more
