Astrid was taking a first responders course this weekend in Westport, so the kids and I decided to try out the New Zealand ski slopes. After much soul searcher and internet browsing, we elected to head for Mt. Hutt in Cantebury (a couple of hours south west of Christchurch). We headed out Friday morning, with a quick stop in Christchurch to affect a repair to Adrianne's new braces. She had been picking at them and pulled the top wire loose. I tried to fix them with a pair of needle nose pilers, but evidentally this orthodontic stuff is a bit more complicated. We had a couple of hours to kill so we strolled through Cathedral Square where the Christchurch Arts Festival was in full swing. In the middle of the square was a giant inflatable orchid. ... read more

ARTHURS PASS TO CHRISTCHURCH VIA LAKE LYNDON & LAKE COLERIDGE We awoke after a great sleep to a wet morning, our fellow hostelers had planned to do some day trips in the National Park, but it looked as though the weather was going to put an end to that. We headed East towards Christchurch and when we reached Lake Lyndon, remembered that there were several 4WD tracks in the area, out with our 4WD bibles and soon we were off the main road and skirting he edge of Lake Lyndon heading towards Lake Coleridge. The road was not that long and before too long we arrived at the Lake Coleridge village and power station, a stop here for lunch and a quick look around the power station and we were back on Tar seal heading ... read more

CHRISTCHURCH TO OAMARU Another trip on tar seal, we had intended to travel right through to Naseby, but after ringing my cousins Sue and Ivan Ericsson in Reidstown just out of Oamaru they asked us to stay. Sue and Ivan are renovating their home and Ivan was busy adding on a front room when we arrived. It was great to catch up with them again and hear all the family news. ... read more

Ian taking over blogging for a bit… We stopped for fish and chips in Akaroa where we had Hoki (a fish that is a bit like cod only smaller). We had to buy the vinegar separately which we put down to cultural differences - a bit like those in Germany where they look at you like you’ve gone mad when you ask to have your fish without remoulade sauce but with essig instead - and that is at the place that advertises “English Fish & Chips”! After the meal, I promptly fell asleep overlooking the bay as I had been up all night, so I can confidently say that Akaroa is a very relaxing town. Once we got back to Christchurch, we had planned to have a quick sandwich back at the B&B and then pack ... read more

Drove the final leg to Christchurch. We stopped off at a couple of fantastic lake. Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukake (Hope I got the names correct). Arrived in Christchurch in the late afternoon and checked into the Crowne Plaza for 3 nights! Ate on Oxford Terrace by the river and then watched 'Stranger than Fiction' - Good film... read more

So after a couple of days in Christchurch relaxing at a nice hostel called the Old Countryhouse we are back on the road. We are going to be spending the best part of a month travelling from Christchurch to Auckland. Our route will take us down through Mount Cook National Park, through Queenstown, across to Milford Sound and then up the West Coast. We are crossing to the North Island on the ferry on the 27th, and heading up through Tongariro, Rotorua and the Bay of Islands before descending on Auckland. Our van was a bit small in Oz, so in true Clare & Dan Flashpacker style we have upgraded. Our new van is pictured. We can now swing two cats at once. Also included is a shot of the Wizard of Christchurch. This geezer appears ... read more

Having passed the morning watching playful dolphins frolicking in Le Bons Bay, we spend a couple of hours in Akaroa, the largest town on the Banks Peninsula and located at the end of a deep inlet that extends all the way to the centre of the peninsula. Akaroa is a gentrified kind of place, all cafés and estate agents - not too different from your average West London high street then, except for the stunning location. After the rugged and rather more isolated beauty of Le Bons Bay, we don't hang around too long as there's a long drive ahead. After a quick lunch by the water back in Barry's Bay, we wave goodbye to the wondrous and glorious Half Moon Cottage, entertaining fanciful thoughts of one day running a hostel in this beautiful part of ... read more

2/1/07 It was cloudy and freezing when we left Christchurch and we headed up the coast for Kaikoura. The coastline on this side was lovely as well so we stopped to take pictures at a place called Cathedral Cliffs. These rocks were weird because they have been formed like organ pipes. We then stopped in Cheviot for lunch before driving up to Kaikoura. We got to our next Bella Vista in Kaikoura around 12.00 and this motel was up a hill overlooking Kaikoura so wasn’t too far out of town. We walked down for lunch and then went along to the Whale Watch boat for our 2.30pm sailing. IT WAS CANCELLED because the weather had been so bad, but we reckoned the sea looked calm enough to go out. The previous three days had been cancelled ... read more

It is the day after Christmas, and Robyn and I are heading south to Stewart Island, the lesser of New Zealand's three main islands, in search of birds. It is our first time there. The plan for day one (Tuesday) is travel from Christchurch to Dunedin, then on to Stewart Island the next day, and back up to Christchurch on Sunday. The first stop on the road trip was the mighty metropolis of Timaru. There is an aviary at Caroline Bay (a big round one with common parroty birds) and another at the Botanic Gardens (a much smaller one with even commoner birds). That's about all there is to say about Timaru so...um, we headed on towards Oamaru. Oamaru's claim to fame is penguins. There are two species resident there, the little blue and the yellow-eyed. ... read more
