School holidays were upon us so all arrangements were put in place to visit Viv and Charlie in Wanaka. The idea was for our two grandkids, Holly and Ella, to come down to us from Hastings and then after a few days around Wellington, fly down to Queenstown where Viv would meet us with her two Grandkids, Annabelle and Harriet, then drive back over the Crown Range to Wanaka. Always interesting going over the Crown range with great vistas of Queenstown from the top and the lovely tussock country on the drive down to Lake Wanaka. This area of the South Island is beautiful, winter and summer. The 4 girls always get on well when they are together and with the prospect of snow and skiing Holly and Ella were very excited. I was out and about today, taking photos to help promote a local organisation, and found this gallery along the way. I quickly found myself completely side-tracked. There are 8 artists who are part of this gallery and the best part of your visit will be meeting at least one of them. I was very fortunate to meet the artist who had created the gorgeous mosaics I loved. He was kind enough to talk me through what his works involve and the inspiration behind them. The personal touch makes such a difference when you are as completely without artistic ability as I am! For me to promote a business they have to be great. I love the range of works this gallery has eg there is a very tall bright pink giraffe that is now on ... read more

A few months ago I joined the Whanganui Airport Control Tower Restoration Group (Inc) which is a bit of a mouthful. This group was formed in 2004 in order to retain the control tower and to create an Aviation Museum and Education Centre in it. Even though I think it is one of the ugliest buildings ever put up, and is below a hill which sort of defeats the purpose it was built for as you can't see planes as they fly over the city, it is am important part of our aviation history. It is even listed as a Category 1 Heritage building in the Whanganui District Council Heritage Register. If you think I am sounding fairly knowledgeable, it's because I am quoting from the Group's informative pamphlet which I am sure they will forgive ... read more

How did I not know this amazing museum existed? I accidentally came across it while passing through Feilding and decided I needed to check it out. It is huge. HUGE. It is set up to show what early rural life was like in NZ and the vehicles and machinery that helped make NZ what it is today. I never knew there were so many types of horse-drawn carriages. And don't start me on how many John Deere tractors they have there! I was really impressed by how friendly, helpful and informative the volunteers were and how clean everything was. The way there were seats near some of the displays also impressed me as anyone elderly or unwell would be very glad to be able to make use of them. Yes, the building is that big! My ... read more

Ormondville: a small settlement which has plenty to offer keen photographers, railway enthusiasts and genealogists who have links to this area as I do. It is just over 20km from Dannevirke and is a place I believe is worth making the drive from the main highway to see. Don't expect to find bakeries, public toilets or a petrol station. But do expect to see some unusual sights. https://ormondvillerail.weebly.com/ Ormondville is most famous for its railway station and the effort that has gone into preserving it. There are some great bits and pieces there to photograph. https://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/88311570/flashback-the-ormondville-murders-of-1884 It is definitely worth stopping at the nearby cemetery and having a stroll amongst the graves. The link will tell you the story of one of the headstones. I found this headstone and didn't know anything about the murders unti ... read more

If you are travelling along the Surf Highway or doing the round the mountain trip, take a short trip to see the Cape Egmont Lighthouse. This part of the coast has had many shipwrecks occur along it and you will quickly see why a lighthouse was needed there. Naturally I arrived on a wet and blustery Taranaki day which meant I wasn't wasting any time outside the car. But it is worth the quick side-trip just to grab some photos. Just keep an eye open for the road you need to turn down as I have managed to drive right past it every time. If this sounds stupid, you need to realise there is often no cellphone coverage along this part of the coast so your maps on your phone are not going to be of ... read more

If you are travelling between Wanganui and Palmerston North and want to see something unusual, take a short side trip to the settlement of Ratana. And make sure you have your camera charged as the Ratana Church is stunning. You can take photos from outside the fence but please read the sign at the entrance and follow the rules. The Wikipedia link below will provide you with the history of the Church and the settlement. It is worth the short drive and there is a dairy there so you can grab a snack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rātana_pā... read more

I was fortunate enough to be offered the chance to travel to New Zealand with work this month. It was a quick trip, fitting a huge amount into our week there. This blog attempts to cover the fantastic seven days in the land of the great white cloud. Thursday 2nd of May I craned and twisted my neck as we began our descent, eager to catch a first glimpse of the North Island as we came in to land in Auckland. The change in body position was a welcome relief after spending the previous 11 hours on the second of our long haul flights. I had left my house in Cardiff about 35 hours earlier, so I was very relieved to have arrived and was looking forward to getting our whistle stop trip around New Zealand’s ... read more

It has been months in the planning but now it is just 18 days away before we start out on what promises to be the greatest adventure,in more ways than one,of our travel experiences. This adventure all came about through Gretchen wanting to tick off one of those 'things to do before.....you know what'(not that she has any intention of doing 'you know what'!and see the 'Big Five'live in their backyard and not a zoo. The planning has been extensive despite the fact that this will be a trip of just under a month and no where near as long as the 6 or 8 month BBA's have been. For a start Kiwis don't get a simple stamped 3 month visitor visa when they arrive in South Africa anymore, like we do in so many other countries ... read more
